We check out a Troy Bilt 30" rear engine riding mower with a Briggs and Stratton Intek 10.5HP Engine on it.
It comes in for a different issue but we find an issue with leaking gas and the mower would not start.
The symptoms for this fix can be that the mower will not start, has no power, bogs/dies out under a load, engine surges, popping/backfiring or starts but dies when you take it off choke.
After we put gas in it and let it sit we found it leaking gas and the crankcase had fuel in it
We go through the full troubleshooting process to get it figured out and repaired.
We see the unit has the dreaded Nikki Carburetor so we do the Walbro conversion and get it taken care of.
Some would say "why not get a jet kit"?
This is an aftermarket carburetor and a conversion from the original, while there may be a jet kit available it would be hard to find as these are a little different than the version in most of the Walbro carburetors.
The rebuild kit for the carburetor is more than this replacement carburetor itself and they do not have the issues like the originals. The OEM Replacement is over $130 and will soon fail again because of the design.
We are giving the cheapest long term solution to the customer with an upgraded carburetor.
This method works well and if you start out with a small jet then if you have an issue you can also go slightly larger on the jet size to get to the perfect mix (stoich).
I do not use a drill here because I like to adjust for the middle by hand and a power tool goes too fast for this. You want to stay centered as possible for best results.
This is a more advanced repair unless you are replacing one one a larger Briggs & Stratton where the replacement may be direct
If you notice the engine sounding like it is being choked, putting or running rough your jet may be too large. You may also smell un-burned fuel if this is the case.
If the engine is surging or has rough running but smooths out with some choke applied then there is likely an issue with not enough fuel getting to the engine. The jet size should be increased at this point.
Make sure the intake gaskets are also replaced because an air leak between the engine and carburetor anywhere could could an air leak, irradic running or running extremely fast.
This is a Troy Bilt riding mower model 13CC26JD011 with a Briggs & Stratton Intek 10.5HP Engine Model 21R707-0039-G1
Carburetor is part number 594605 which can be found at amzn.to/3Nde0ES
Intake gasket part number 692137 can be found atamzn.to/46E85Q9
Intake gasket to air cleaner/block (orange) part number 692138 can be found at amzn.to/416RPGd
Micro drill bits can be found at amzn.to/3RrARiH
Hand drill can be found at amzn.to/3T6uiDl
It also comes with an assortment of less than good drill bits I do not use but could be sufficient to perform this task
The Cub Cadet CC30H Model 13C721JD010 has a similar Briggs & Stratton engine
These fully guided instructions work for many Craftsman, Cub Cadet, MTD, Yard Machines or Murray models. Including some version of models TB30, TB30B, TB30R, R110, RER1000, CC30H and others

When screwing the studs from carb to intake if you turn them backwards a turn or two they will find the old threads 100% you will feel a click and then you can screw them in, i do that with all metal screws into plastic and it works every time Thanks for your videos they are awesome i have learned so much

Good tips! I wasn't really saying the threads wouldn't line up they just have almost like saw teeth on then and every time they screw in to seat more plastic gets torn off and they don't have brass thread inserts like many of them

It happens all the time, people get very upset when you tell them the machine you just fixed is not working again because they put their bad fuel in it...or if the machine dies because is out of gas that is your fault also! I install fuel shut offs wherever I can this customer said she wouldn't use it anyway and didn't want to buy one. I didn't bother trying to talk her into it since she said she wasn't going to use it anyway.

hello! i have a 2017 Columbia CR30 with the 382 MTD engine! It will start and run fine, but after 20-30min of mowing, it starts to Surge and then just shut off for about 15 minutes like it's not getting any gas, and then it starts up again! Amazon will bring a new solenoid today, as the solenoid was leaking gas from it! Runs strong and good! The choke/govenor swings back and forth when it starts surging! Any thoughts? Thanks much!

I would say the most common cause of this issue we find is going to be a restriction in the fuel line/tank or the fuel tank vent. It could also be a blockage at the inlet of the carburetor or in the carburetor itself that is not allowing full fuel flow

That thing wouldn't make a pimple on the ass of a snapper rer. I can't believe I even looked at one to replace a John Deere GX 85. That JD was a great mower except for the transaxle. Steel axle shaft riding in an aluminum housing with no bearing or bushing. Got sloppy after awhile. Too bad snapper dropped the rer. They wanted too much money for it.

  • @IndRepair

    @IndRepair

Yeah I agree 100% I used to recommend the snappers but they were on the pricey side no doubt. This is really the only thing left on the market, I do see some Toro 34" zero turn mowers on occasion and they are still made but if you need a 30% there is nothing else out there. I still see a lot of the old John Deere GX series and although parts are getting scarce they are still solid for the most part with those Kawasaki engines. Long as someone didn't dog the transaxle as you said. Thanks for watching!
