We check out a couple mowers that customers brought in with Briggs Intek 21hp engines and various no start issues
We go over a thorough diagnosis will full easy troubleshooting process on both then we repair them.
This exact troubleshooting process can be applied on almost all mower brands, makes/models although the process does vary slightly
We go through full electrical diagnostic process for starting system/safety switches/pto switches and battery/solenoid connections on riding mowers or zero turn mowers
We also go through full mechanical troubleshooting and diagnostics process on Briggs Intek single cylinder engines
We do the first repair on a John Deere LA125 riding mower that will not turn over.
The battery is dead so we charge it but we do not get any spark after doing this.
We do the full diagnostics with Briggs & Stratton 21HP engine model 331877-0113-B1
We do the other repair and troubleshooting on a Craftsman YT3000 that will not turn over at all. Does not make any noise although the battery and starter are good.
This is on model 917.288513 with 21hp Briggs & Stratton 331877-2371-G5

I'm, not complaining. Don't, get wrong. I do, always sand the flywheel magnet, clean. Just because, my dad taught me to do it, when I was a kid.🙂 I, get what you're saying, though. Great upload, sir!

This is a great vid. Thank you. I have the same engine. Was mowing yesterday no problems, started right up, ran and cut fine. Ran it until it ran out of gas. Put gas (fresh w/Stabil) and now it won't start. Battery reads 12.68 volts after trying to crank it over a few times. Air filter, clean as a whistle, spark plug good (looking), checked push rods (good), can turn the engine by hand and get resistence at the right point. Puzzling so far.

@@IndRepair thank you for the reply. Good on both, I got it running and moved it from my driveway to my shed. Started it again a few hours later. The test will be when I try again on the weekend. I suspect the ignition solenoid and if it acts up, I can at least use your jumper trick to get it started and moved around while I order a new solenoid for it. It is the original one and 15 years old. Machine never sits outside in the weather. I did check the charging system and that was good, about 13.68 VOLTS while running.

@@IndRepair found the ignition solenoid was dead on my Dad's tractor today. My issue may just have been a loose connection between the starter and the + post on the ignition solenoid; mine I have been able to start up 3x no probs, and then mowed Friday no issues starting or when restarting.

I thought I did one time but ended up being a brand new bad coil. Metals can go bad and magnets can loose their magneticity but after all these years I have never seen it. Used to see electric motors metals go bad occasionally and would not create the right magnetic field after rewinding. Not a common occurrence. Thanks for watching!

My head gasket is blown out it blew a few days ago on the intek 18.5 and was pouring smoke out for all the neighbors. It kept dying out because of that and water in the carburetor bowl but i kept staring it back to get it back to the shed then it just didn't wanna run so i pushed it back a few feet and am waiting for now it needs both new push rods the ones ain't bad but was rusted before

@@IndRepair i will i got its rusted piston moving and both valves cause when i got the mower it didn't have a engine shroud and the carburetor was wide open to the rain and snow and is how those things rusted in place was why the flywheel wouldn't spin at first but it does now its just needing a few new parts then i can start mowing with it

Could the ignition switch go bad and allow the mower to turn over but not start and not send 12 V to the solenoid on the small leads my solenoid doesn't click anymore when I turn the key but the starter will turn over. It just won't start and run.

  • @IndRepair

It is possible but likely a bad wire or connection to the solenoid or the solenoid itself. I would check with a volt meter and work your way backwards, many times it is the engine harness wire that goes bad between the solenoid and engine harness itself. If you find no voltage at solenoid, check at harness on corresponding wire and see if you have it here. If you do no, trace up to the switch and see if you have it at the switch
