Rear Admiral Schools Pauline Hanson on Submarine Capabilities

A rear admiral appeared to become frustrated when he was asked whether submarines commissioned by the Australian government could last more than 20 minutes under water by One Nation Senator Pauline Hanson.
“Is it true that pump-jet submarines can only stay underwater for 20 minutes?” Hanson asked.
“I assure you they can last for longer than 20 minutes,” Rear Admiral Greg Sammut said. “A pump jet is a form of propeller, it has no bearing on how deep a submarine can go, how long it can stay under water.”
The senator was inquiring about plans for 12 new vessels, which will be built by French shipbuilder Naval Group, SBS reported.

They just made it unnecessarily expensive and didn’t transfer as much technology to Australia (including construction in Australia) as requested. To put some context into this. Pauline Hanson wanted Australia to buy nuclear submarines back in 2017. And she couldn't understand why we were going to buy anything other than nuclear submarines, because they can stay under water for a long time. And the rear admiral even told her the nuclear submarines were out of the question. But she was confused about the propulsion system. In the end though Australia is to get the submarines that she wanted.

Pump jet is a pump arrangement that is ducted for efficiency and accoustic signature attenuation via limiting prop tip cavatation in the same way that the winglets on a airliner limits wingtip vortices. It stops spillover from the high pressure side of the prop to the low pressure side by fencing it off. Its quieter and gives a bit more oomf.

I almost wish the rear admiral had instead said something along the lines of: Senator Hanson, your absolutely correct about the submerged dive time, that is the accumulative total of all crew members holding their breath for as long as they can underwater. As each person differs considerably in their ability to do this by several seconds, the dive time happens to be 19 min, 47 sec. But we decided to round it up a bit to 20 min to make our potential adversaries think we have a longer endurance than we actually have. Next question!

By terms of the contract they only needed to pay A$90 million in compensation but as a sweetener to France upped it to A$835. Now (Sep 2021) buying 8 nuclear subs off America. Fun fact: France didn't have any diesel subs one the shelf and had to convert existing nuclear propulsions ones to diesel.

But her staff did not find the right questions to ask. - Is the 'Suffren' build on time and on budget? - What do the American, the Dutch, the Swedes and the Brits have to say about the French Navy? Are they any good? - If a country can't get American toys, they buy Russian or German. Never French. Why do you think that is? - Why do you need such a big boat. Why a nuke, converted to use diesels? Why not a Swedish Gotland-class diesel-electric? - Nobody has ever used a pump-jet on anything bigger than a torpedo. That either means that the French are very smart and everybody else missed a trick. Or it is a stupid idea. Usually it is the latter. What have the French done to prove the concept?
