    @Israel Hands so i researched a Bit During a NATO test this Submarine was able to Land multiple critical Torpedo Hits to a Aircraft Carrier wich is actually way better then just beeing fast Additionally, while doing that it stayed under water for 2 weeks without emmiting the pollution of its Diesel Motors in Order to stay undetected 2 Things you misunderstood: 1. It doesn't matter that they charge their batteries with the Diesel Motors If they then use electric engines for their propulsion 2. I never said it was quicker then a nuclear sub i didnt say it was able to go further Heck i didnt even say its better then a nuclear, i Just said that Diesel subs obviously are viable Sorry for my writing i am German and my Phone keeps correcting my english words to German words wich doesn't exactly Help...😅

    @Israel Hands Diesels are not U-boats. The Gotland that we’re talking about can remain submerged for 2 weeks. It’s much quieter than a nuclear submarine (no steam-flow noise) and, get this, it can stay surfaced until it’s 2 weeks away from target

Moving on, as a western nation we pay our politicians at a substantial rate. I too have some military friends who feel we are wasting money. Those new extremely expensive American jets we have signed up have not even been proven reliable yet. Several other countries have pulled out of buying them. And yes the F111 was a horrible jet to start with and Australian ingenuity made it into one of the best jets ever. However submarines are a different kettle of fish. France does not have a good track record with them. Looking to me like a very expensive mistake.

Commonwealth armies use pips which are in no way stars being derived from the order of the bath. After all, a minister may hold several different briefs during their career, for example one who was moved from defence to health can’t be expected to know everything about both subjects. What I would expect them to do is appoint competent advisors who can provide technical insight and advice, and make decisions based on that. In this case, however, it would seem that this particular politician is far out of her depth. So far in fact that she doesn’t know what she doesn’t know. A classic case of the Dunning Kruger effect.

The Admiral's response was that stationing 8,000 Marines would probably end up adding a total of 25,000 persons to Guam's 175,000 existing population. All the comments are critical of Pauline Hanson. However, four years after this inquiry, Australia is looking for a way out of this $90 billion program, looking at other alternatives, and refitting the aging , troubled Collins class subs to tie them over the troubles with the French sub. In retrospect, they should have taken more notice of Pauline's concerns.

    @@rkanava7245 1. Oh? And just what are those wrong reasons for Senator Hanson being there? I thought she was there to represent ordinary inarticulate people, who know virtually nothing about submarines, but just want to know the truth about the black hole into which billions of their dollars are disappearing. 2. You say, “Pauline's concerns weren't realistic problems that you can't take seriously” (I might point out that there is a double negative in this statement, and it actually means the opposite to what I think you meant it to say, however I will reply to the statement which I think you intended to make) Firstly, Senator Hanson asked why they only considered diesel subs, and not nuclear. This is a very pertinent question, as Australia has the third largest Exclusive Economic Zone in the world to defend, and is so dependent on shipping. Australia’s present Collins class diesel subs have to come to near the surface to run their generators every few days, which make them susceptible to detection. Also, because of Australia’s vast oceans, the present subs undertake operations of up to 70 days, with half of that time spent getting to and from their patrol area. With twelve French diesel subs, it is likely Australia would only be likely to have one sub on patrol on post at a time. With over four million square miles of ocean (not including that which Australia claims in its Antarctic territory), that is ridiculously inadequate. Alternatively, a nuclear sub can stay undetected, submerged, on post, almost indefinitely. Now I don’t know the costs of nuclear subs cf diesel subs, so that is why we need people in our parliament, like Senator Hanson, who are prepared to ask these stupid questions Also, her question about how long the French subs can remain submerged was also very pertinent, for the same reasons. Secondly, her question as to why did they chose a sub that was mostly theoretical, and a long way from being tested, was also very pertinent. Four years later they are still a long way from being tested. Thirdly, her questions about pump jet subs was also pertinent, as this is a large factor in how detectable these subs are. Before Senator Hanson asked this question, I didn’t know what pumped jet subs were, so we need people like Senator Hanson, who will ask these questions. Fourthly, because this video only showed the part of the questioning that made Senator Hanson look stupid, we don’t know what all of her questions were. 3. You say, “The fact that Pauline was on the right side in the argument doesn't make her right” What??? Just because she is a red haired, inarticulate woman, that ran a fish and chip shop; does that mean she can’t be right? If you think articulate people in smart uniforms, speaking authoritatively are the only ones who can be right; then you would be a keen follower of Hitler, Stalin, or Chairman Mao

Australia nuclear submarine deal: defence pact with US and UK means $90bn contract with France will be scrapped Scott Morrison says nuclear-powered submarines will be built in Adelaide under the AUKUS framework announced with Joe Biden and Boris Johnson Scott Morrison announces the AUKUS pact and nuclear submarine deal in Canberra, with Boris Johnson and Joe Biden on screen for their respective announcements in the UK and US Scott Morrison announces the AUKUS pact and nuclear submarine deal in Canberra, with Boris Johnson and Joe Biden on screen for their respective announcements in the UK and US. Photograph: Mick Tsikas/AAP Katharine Murphy and Daniel Hurst Wed 15 Sep 2021 23.16 BST Australia has scrapped its strife-torn $90bn submarine deal with France and entered a new pact with the United States and the United Kingdom to acquire nuclear-powered submarines. Scott Morrison made the announcement early on Thursday in Canberra during a virtual address with Joe Biden and and Boris Johnson - a coordinated show of diplomatic strength clearly aimed at China, the rising power in the Indo-Pacific. While some defence analysts have pushed for the development of nuclear-powered submarines in Australia for two decades, Australia does not have a domestic nuclear industry. The prime minister told reporters: “We intend to build these submarines in Adelaide, Australia, in close cooperation with the United Kingdom and the United States. Warships and fighter jets of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) navy take part in a military display in the South China Sea. US, UK and Australia forge military alliance to counter China Read more “But let me be clear - Australia is not seeking to establish a nuclear industry or establish a civil nuclear capability, and we will continue to meet all of our nuclear non-proliferation obligations.” Morrison said the preparations for the deal would take 18 months. Given the lack of local capability, Australia would need to “leverage expertise” from the US and the UK, “building on the two countries’ submarine programs to bring an Australian capability into service at the earliest achievable date”. The prime minister said Australia was committed to “adhering to the highest standards for safeguards, transparency, verification, and accountancy measures to ensure the non-proliferation, safety, and security of nuclear material and technology”. Labor was briefed on the new security pact on Wednesday. Historically, the opposition has opposed the development of nuclear power in Australia. Morrison, Biden and Johnson were at pains on Thursday morning to say the submarines delivered under the security partnership would not carry nuclear weapons. Referencing the capability gap, Johnson said the first task would be to “help” Australia acquire a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines, “emphasising, of course, that the submarines in question will be powered by nuclear reactors - not armed with nuclear weapons”. Thursday’s announcement followed a meeting between Morrison, Biden and Johnson at the G7, and a separate meeting between Australia’s prime minister and the French president Emmanuel Macron in Paris. Australia had planned to acquire 12 new Attack-class submarines under a $90bn program with France’s Naval Group, but Australia’s biggest defence acquisition has been plagued by delays, cost blowouts, and disputes over local industry involvement.

Moreover, battery technology has advanced so far that I'd posit that it's very possible, given the information is classified, that it could be weeks. Even then, the sub doesn't need to surface, it just needs to snorkel so it can pull in oxygen to run the engines, recharge the batteries and deep dive again. It's pretty obvious that as far as submersion time, nuclear subs are superior. But as the gentleman said, there were many aspects that went into the sub selection, and I'd wager he's far more able to speak definitively on the decision than any of us.

How are you planing to run a Millitary sub on the batteries? Like Tesla a sub will run a few hours, then they have to charge the batteries. (Of course you can go into a safe mode, but then it's not fully operational). Why do you think nobody uses the Diesel subs? Nuclear sub can run full speed until something breaks or the crew goes hungry (It's usually 3 month). There is no limitation for a nuclear sub. They even generate Oxygen & drinking water .... * Really the best case scenario is a day or two on batteries. Vs 3 month in a nuclear sub with 100% power 24/7.

Her comments reveal her ignorance not only on the subject of submarines but also on the procurement process, the project management process and the military in general. Furthermore he explained at least 3 times about the pump jet and the fact that it is only one part of the system that they were tasked by government to procure and she still would not let go of the bone - trying to undermine and discredit the process for her own agenda. Diesel can stay underwater for a few days, maybe few weeks if they conserve power and propulsion is knocked out. Batteries will only last so long having to power all that life support, and there's no way to recharge them without surfacing. Using snorkels doesn't count as "not surfacing". Nuclear powered submarines need refueling once every several years but underwater stay time is bottlenecked by food supply for the crew.

  • @michaelbuckers

    @michaelbuckers

    4 жыл бұрын

    @Jimmy Submarines don't go underwater because they wage wars there. They go underwater to use bulk water thickness as an invisibility cloak, so they can sneak up on unsuspecting targets and execute a surprise attack. Using snorkels haven't been effective at concealing surfaced submarines since mid-WW2, it will not do anything to prevent AWACS from detecting the sub - it has to be dozens of yards underwater. And if enemy knows of your attack, you might as well use surface ships which are far better equipped and far less vulnerable than submarines. So no, using snorkels has no benefit whatsoever beyond using the water as a shield against bullets.
