I know the feeling about crappy paper. When I first started coloring I bought coloring books not knowing anything about paper, I have been doing practice using them, but I use my Prismacolors in my good books. Great video, it really helped me understand hair better!

I am really pleased that I have found this video as I now know that coloring on the paper of anastasia books with pencils is not all that great. It looks as though I may have to scan the pictures so I can put the images on decent paper. I love your teachings and I have learned alot. I have also bought things from your etsy shop that have helped me so much. Thank-you.

Until now, as tonight when I watched your hair coloring in books. showing us the details, textures and color. what the difference are, and a lot more. I've never thought of colouring books as anything but children's learning pass time. Yet thinking about it now, and the way you do it, it's the same then pure art. Amazing. I'm going out in the morning to buy one. ( with hair.) I need to try your techniques. I hope I never stop learning. Getting back into art will take the longest though. Thank You.

Hi, Lori….this was very helpful the way you defined the sections of hair and then colored each section separately. Hair completely overwhelms me, so I can hardly wait to try this technique. I am a newbie to coloring.

So first of all, I just have to say that when I came to the coloring community, I thought I knew everything there was to know about colored pencil, theory, execution, and nobody who colored in coloring books could tell me anything of value. so I didn't really pay attention to any of these videos, except for entertainment purposes. Lol and behold, here we are years later and I'm finding myself frantically searching KZread for your videos trying to figure out why the hair that I'm doing in these coloring books sucks so badly. I have to say that without question I have learned more from you in the time that I have been following you than learned at Pratt and NYU combined the entire time I was a student, and in all my time in the NY art world. So thank you for doing these videos, because coloring has become one of the only things that gives me joy since I got sober 2 years ago, and it was becoming increasingly frustrating not to be able to apply some of the things I learned in art school to coloring books because they're different from professional artwork. I DON'T know it all, and if I ever said anything that in any way insulted you, I apologize profusely. I don't think I did, but I'm very flippant, and I have been known to be arrogant. so I apologize if I ever have. With all that said, I know this video is really old, but I'm working in a Kerby Rosones book and the paper is really smooth and terrible for colored pencil. I'm terrible at hair anyway and the way the hair is drawn is annoying on this picture, and the problem is I already did a watercolor background, so I can't spray it with fixative or the watercolor is going to run. Do you have any suggestions for adding tooth? I'm already pretty deep into the hair so I don't think gesso is going to really help. Also, for some reason, no matter what pencils I use it doesn't look like I'm making individual hairs. It always just looks like a flat coloring and I don't know why. Maybe it's the paper, because my pencils are lethal weapon sharp. I don't know. Anyway thanks for reading this novel if you actually see it. And again thank you for these videos you are really a lifesaver and you do so much and you do it for free. There's nobody like you lori.

I know I love coloring books but once you start recognizing some of the flaws you will certainly grow frustrated. I have several books I love, but find printing my own really makes a difference. I like Kerby's art. I don't like the paper so don't feel frustrated. I will bet if it was on better paper it would most certainly turn out better. Kerby's books are best for marker. Even marker with pencil over it will help a lot.

@@ColorMyWorld welp, I'll try that next time. I want to do the picture on the back though, maybe I'll copy it onto better paper. I'll probably just finish this and call it a learning experience lol. I don't like markers, mostly because I'm not dood with them hahaha, but they do make easy work of base layers. I'm still gathering supplies to make some base paste, it's just really hard for me to crush up my pastels 😭

I'm so so glad you expressed your frustration with the paper. I am working a picture in Mythographic: Aquatic right now and am so frustrated! I thought I was failing at this awesome technique until I got out some colored pencil paper and tried some hair on it. Viola! I'm suddenly awesome! I used some workable fixative on the book paper and it helped but not like working on the CP paper. I need to get me one of those light pads and end my frustration. lol Thanks so much for teaching .

This actually very logical when I think about it. Hair isn't one big slab, it's hundreds of tiny pieces. The same thing goes for this as anything we color in regards to light and shadow

I scanned the image and printed it on Strathmore 300 series Bristol paper 100 lbs/ 270 gsm at my local printer. The only problem--- the line drawing has become much darker now. I did this quickly as an experiment while grocery shopping. Will see if I can experiment a bit more and get the lines to get lighter. Printing and scanning services are super cheap in my country, so it is worth it to experiment with different papers this way. The printer guy used the flat feeder tray on the Epson L1800 printer.

Rupali Shanker try changing the jpeg to a png because then you can lighten the line art so it looks more grey.

Absolutely love the color! Don’t know if it’s useful but I use cheaper, hard pencils on poor quality paper. They seem to work better. They also sharpen to great points for hair/fur. I even use a soft graphite pencil-6B-for hair. Again because they sharpen easily.

I've got a fairys book that's like that. Got at Barnes and Noble, now I know why it was marked down such a low price. I've gotten so mad coloring in it, and thought it was me, until I got my prismacolored pencils , and tried them, nope! Same out come. Now I use it for some colors that I want to see if will work together. Lol. Anything I'm not sure of how or what it looks like, I grab that book. Lol.

Lori, after watching a bunch of your videos this week, I'm finding myself looking at light sources in illustrations. There was a great one that popped up on my FB page for Disney World's Mickey's Very Scary Party. It was all of the main characters looking at a lit haunted house and fireworks. I may clip it and keep it as a reference for night pictures. Thanks for teaching us to be better colorists.

Hold up on your decision. I just got my set of graphite pencils and I am not getting the same reaction I did with the wax/oil pencils. I even tried Holbein pencils on it and didn't like it at all, but the graphite is working out so far. I haven't gotten to upper layers so if craps out on me again the book is going into the trash pile. If it works out for graphite it's going on my favorites shelf. Working on it now.

I am on Etsy and |I have never in my life seen an Artist with an ego like that, and the expense ! No way ! I have nearly all Luis Royos sketch books and you never see him charging a price like that or Csaba Markus, those are real Artists ! She will go out as fast as she came in ........ its only a movement not a phase like in the Classics ..... I have tons of artwork and I have never seen anyone so shallow as to mark all the drawings, which you can do over a light box anyway ! :)
