I’d say even £2k is very reasonable given the amazing car that they are, and let’s be honest you’re not going to be replacing a propshaft every year so you could take a grand off really. I was always advised to budget for round £2k in repairs per year. £190 per month is actually a lot less than you’d pay for an average new car on lease or PCP etc, so I’d say still great value for money really.

I’m fine with the costs for this one Gary. Last service for the Maserati was over £4k!!! 🤪. I suppose I wanted everyone to know that you can’t buy a cheap L322 and then expect to run them on a budget. This one wasn’t cheap to begin with but it’s a fantastic car and forms the backbone of our little fleet. Ed

I am always amazed at the lengths people go to to defend these cars. I have friends who have owned them and I have driven two variants, a 90s Overfinch V8 which was great fun and a 2011 Vogue. They are incredible comfortable and luxurious, a very nice place to be but mechanical build quality doesn't match the interior opulence. The Vogue was not a particularly reliable beast even when new, while its replacement a 2016 Cayenne has been ultra reliable even if it isn't ultimately as cosseting inside. All cars have maintenence requirements and occasionally go wrong but Porsches, BMWs, Audis etc just do not seem to have quite the level of mechanical failure of Range Rovers. BMW has been in stable ownership since the 50s, Audi the 60s and Mercedes and Lexus forever, Porsche a little more complicated. LandRover, though has been passed through several owners, Rover, British Leyland, BAE, BMW, Ford and now Tata. Most luxury brands are coveted and not traded, why would BMW a hugely successful brand keep Mini and not Land Rover? The answer I once got from a very senior BMW exectuive was that there was a cultural lack of commitment that BMW found difficult to understand. Successive owners have also found it difficult to make a consistent profit with Land Rover and unprofitable companies frequentl;y have quality problems.

BMW were never interested in Rover group, their intention all along was to steal LR 4 x 4 Technology and asset strip it. I know a lot of people who worked at Longbridge, and people who were in the know.

I bought a Discovery years ago. The prop shaft started clunking. I was told the garage hadn’t done any pre delivery checks including topping up the oil. Apparently the prop shaft came off the vehicle to save wear. Having the universal joints replaced was cheap. Removing and refitting wasn’t too difficult. In those days they were quality cars and unlike the Range Rover did not rust. Never trust a garage.

These things can happen with any car, however if it had been fixed properly the first time by the garage there would have been no issue with the prop shaft. You now have peace of mind knowing that it has been done correctly and it will now last for many years to come, hopefully no more big bills, fingers crossed.

Thanks for sharing, a very useful and valuable video. Interesting to hear about the replacement windscreen. I had a 2012 Range Rover Sport that required a replacement windscreen a few years ago due to being hit by a lump of ice . This was carried out by a well known repairer, who snapped the clips and didn't want anything to do with it. I ended up sourcing and replacing myself. I also had the step issue around the 7 year point, which I changed myself before moving the car on for a Giulia Quadrifoglio. Now looking at getting back into a Range Rover as a daily without paying the earth for a newer one.

The 2k odd of unavoidable cost is pretty good value for money considering you are driving such a great car. I’ve had several LR cars L405, Velar, Freelander 2, Evoque, , also driven most of them including New Disco, Disco 4, Disco Sport. New Defender. But my Favourite by far is the L322 4.4 TD, I had a Westminster I regretted selling and this year I picked up a Vogue SE for 14k, was owned by a enthusiast so well looked after and drives like new with just over 80k on the clock😁 been trouble free so far👍🏼

For those that are faint hearted , I bought my L322 in 2020 , was a good car already with 172000km , full service history , had to do front suspension and starter for starters , then front struts , air compressor , both turbos , ac compressor , brake pads , gearbox service and a miriad of other things including egr valves , to date , spent £17500 on it , has to go in for a service , new discs all round , new pads obviously , replace a tyre valve and sensor , terrain response switch and removing a few scuffs on the left hand side , thats going to be a further £2300 . I live in South Africa and the rand value is , spent so far , R350000 , to spend R46000 , if you got the balls to buy one , do it , my car is a 2007 , was always very well maintained . If you buy an iffy one , you wont lose your shirt , you wont lose your wardrobe but you will lose your entire house fixing it , you have been warned , as it is , expect big bills to start coming in at 100000miles , thats about where my costs came in , 4.4s have very expensive oil cooler failures aswell as turbos around that mileage , suspension will be due as its a heavy car , dont beat yourself up , you are driving the last real Range Rover and the new one is not much different , and even with bills tallied , it proberably wont even be a 10% deposit on a new one and yours it fully paid for and depreciated .

Love the up load I honestly do but NO NO NO NO NO !!! These cars can be run on a thick shoes string if you know how to do it If you are not savy then dont go near them I at 70 have had every R/Rover appart from L322 onwards since the tender age of 21 I still have my 1971 2 door in a barn !! My L322 is still with me and appart from changing the ignition switch which always fails to a simple toggle switch She runs like a dream Solid Bema engine Nice gearbox "but change oil every 2 years min" Not as Range Rover say for life what a load of bollocks that is She still gives me arounf 29/30 M.P.G. and yes she does to all those out there that will say no way !! She has now done 159 plus K miles only fault as we speak is the internal rear arches could do with a re paint Oh and the head lining is starting to lets say give way not bad but if you are fussy will need re doing and the head lamp wiper/washers dont work I will say no more appart from the best cars I have ever ever owned including some flash items !!!!!!!!!!!!! If you like them and you dont go to R/R/ dealers and your own mechanic is half decent just go and get one but be very very very careful when buying there are many many that have been trashed and over worked just like the classics GOOD LUCK AND WHAT EVER YOU DO HAVE FUN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Suspension problems which the land rover dealership couldn’t fix ( Maidstone) f*****g useless , hats off to the dealership in ashford for finding the problem in half an hour. I had the car for two years which I had serviced as soon as I purchased it but unfortunately I broke my own rules … never by a motor without the service history ( I was lied to by the scumbag dealer who said it was still at the auction house ) basically ripped off so my fault 🤦‍♂️ PS: it won’t happen again. Fair play Steven. It’s hasn’t let me down yet. You’ve had a different owner experience than me.

You bought a dog man. Paid WAY too much. Ive owned 6 of these with none of these issues. Current one 2012 Westminster overfinch. 80k. Fsh. Bought off insurance for less than quarter what you paid. Fully inspected needs lower ball joint. Pervious rr was same 2011 worked her hard. Little love bar oil changes 3 yrs no issues bar air strut. That one you bought really had a chequered past id say. Or your the unluckiest lad on the planet.

It’s actually a really good car. Our issues were that having spent at the upper end of the price range we’d expect all the car to be sorted. It wasn’t so it went back until they did. I’m fussy about cars and now this one is close to perfect now. Ed

I honestly do not wish to sound like a smart ass here but honestly at 16K this car should have been 100% and more fool you for not having all the checks done first so to all watching this this is the first lesson buy well and you will be ok buy a pile of shit then over to you and your bank manager This is a great advert on how not to buy any car is it not ?? Sorry Sorry I really am but for god sake what were you thinking ?? I have had mine for over 8 years paid 7,999.00 and all is well appart from the ignition switch head lining a little loose and head lamp wipers not working 159k miles and not any other issues ????????????????????????????

Hi Allan. Yes I knew it was right at the top of pricing but Robin rushed in and paid a deposit before viewing. We could have backed out but everything was fixed eventually. It’s been a great car over the last year and we’re still happy with it. It was my early days on the channel and probably made it more dramatic than it really was. Entertainment and all. Glad you’re watching though. All the best. Ed
