⛽️ Epic One Tank Challenge! 🚙 Can you drive 1000 miles in an V8 Range Rover? - Feature Length

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is a charity video in support of Cancer Research.
Help the fight against cancer at fundraise.cancerresearchuk.or...
In this video, I embark on a challenging journey from Land's End to John o'Groats, also known as Le Jog. It's in my 2010 4.4 TDV8 L322 Range Rover. Some think I might be mad? Covering a distance of approximately 837 miles, it spans from the southernmost point to the northernmost point of mainland United Kingdom. Although the minimum distance is 837 miles, it's likely to be a little more.
However, based on past experiences, I know that the car's trip computer is optimistic. This video is not the first in the series; it follows my previous videos where I introduced the idea and discussed preparing the car for the journey.
Addressing sceptics who claim it's impossible, especially with a 'brick-like' Range Rover, I aim to prove them wrong. Their comments have motivated me to take on this challenge. Whether they end up saying "I told you so" or commend my efforts, I welcome all comments. After all, it's for a good cause, as all revenue generated from the video, through advertisements, will be donated to Cancer Research UK.
Before starting the journey, I visited my trusted specialist, Mark Smith Limited. They serviced my car, ensuring the engine and oil are in optimal condition for this. To reduce rolling resistance, I inflated the tires to 40 PSI. However, I haven't made any modifications to lighten the car or seal any panel gaps. I kept all the original equipment, even the spare wheel.
During my visit to Mark Smith, I inquired about the fuel situation. When one tank gets low, the ECU will induce a hesitation. If I run out of fuel, I simply need to top it up, purge the system by starting and stopping a few times, and then start the car by pressing the brake.
To be safe, I carry an extra 20 litres of diesel fuel and a spare fuel filter in case any debris enters the engine towards the end of the journey. Although I have RAC membership, I wanted to take precautions without risking damage to the car. The LeJog run itself will take me approximately 16 hours, with a 5-hour drive to the starting point, the challenge itself, and then an additional 8-hour drive back home. I have set up a small bed in the car for rest stops, aiming to stay close to motorways and possibly utilize services along the way.
Timing-wise, I chose not to do this challenge in winter due to the car's fuel-burning heater, which is used to warm the engine block in cold weather. I also wanted to avoid extreme heat, as I didn't want to rely on air conditioning. I still have all the necessary infotainment features in the car, and I plan to maintain a steady speed, perhaps drafting behind heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) for efficiency.
My departure is scheduled for around 8:00 PM, and I kindly request that viewers watch the entire video, including the advertisements. Although KZread is free for viewers, the advertising revenue generated from this video will be donated to cancer research. I won't be earning any profit from this endeavour. It's all for a good cause and promises to be an exciting and unique adventure in a Range Rover.

Wonderful - well done. I have Terminal Cancer and what you have done today has fully restored my faith in society. I bought this RR TDIV8 6 weeks ago. I had always wanted one and this is part of my bucket list. So far to date, it has exceeded expectations. (apart from two blown small hoses). So thanks again, great video thank you

Just loved your lessons for life at the end of the video - As I said in an earlier posting, I am dying from Terminal caner. I accepted a bike challenge ride from London to Bruges in Belgium. I was told to old and many other things - this is what pushed me on to get their. I was the oldest on the ride but not the last to finish by a long way. We raised money for the same cause. Thanks again for a great video

Brilliant video Ed. I have retired to the Tramontana mountains of Mallorca - my Range Rover has to do hundreds of short daily journeys every year with 4 dogs, logs and groceries. A long journey would be 10 kilometres (6 miles)with 12-15 stop starts a day using the air suspension 12-30 times a day. I still achieve approximately 50% of your truly amazing consumption. This all tells me that the car is brilliant. Good Luck.

This is the first of your videos that I have watched. It is not cheating to draft a HGV. It is frowned upon as it does require a closer following distance. However, the premise of hypermiling requires that you employ advanced driving techniques. Forward planning, bend assessment, using the environment to your advantage. It is arguably the case that someone drafting a HGV is potentially paying more attention to the road, their driving, their position and theirs and others safety. I have no issue with people paying attention whilst driving. As an advanced motorcyclist and driver and not knowing if you are too, you have proved that you have it improved your skill level. And done it in the name of a belting charity. I am sure Robin would be chuffed. Well done.

Range Rover L322 , 2004 , td6 , bmw engine . Full tank 680 miles , motorway trough Europe . Unbelievable for myself. On RAC fuel calculator , based on 22mpg , and 1640 miles trip I was if I remember well around 600£ mark . I ve lost it when actually with a tank empty to empty, when reserve yellow lamp comes on , and it proves that actually with 120£ diesel , 82 litres , we ve driven 680 miles . Still can’t believe it . Amazing cars .

We live in the NW of England so no where near the distance you managed but arrived at Dunoon with less than half a tank used. 236 miles 5 adults plus luggage and not hanging about either. When I filled up to come home the predicted range shot to 562 versus normal range of 440'ish. Donation made to a very worthy cause.

This is impressive. However it also proves that driving a long range Model S or 3 Tesla is not a problem. Fully charged you can drive about 500km before you need to recharge. In about 20 to 30 min you can continue driving with about 80% charged. And then you have your next stop in 3 hours.

Well done Ed , I often run my L322 3.6 to abot 1200km on an indicated 3/4 tank and I fill to the top like you did , so , I guess if I had to push it , in South Africa , I could come close , these tdv8s are especially good on feul on the open road , even when you have to floor it past slow coal trucks . Hoofing it is suburban environs it is not so frugal . They are great cars that unfortunatley , the manufacurer ( who go for electronic high tech these days ) orders their electronics from chinese lucky packets . If you can live with the built in dodgy electronics , they are great .

Well done .... I have done 170 k miles in 2 of these and said 675 miles so nearly 50 % off. I got 49 mpg hypermile without draughting over 20 miles at 50 mph in 8th gear showing on screen just didn't believe it. I always had to fill up weekly after 450 miles but was not completely empty I gusset and topped up about 90 gallons. Screen always said 28 mpg. Always doubted this as seemed to put more gallons in for less miles than screen suggested. I though you wouldn't make it and shows the aero drag at higher speeds but I always felt around town was heaviest consumption on cold engine. Well done and glad you did it and wanted to see video as changed my mind after watching Joel.

My td6 RR averages 32mpg on a run keeping her at good speed about 55-65mpg, lane 1 cruising. There not bad on fuel really on a run but tdv8 are better, mine normally shows around 580-600 full tank range and if I work out fill to fill the computer is right to within a mile or two. Round town I get about 22mpg in summer and 18-19 in winter.

I have family on Orkney so have done much of that trip a few times from home in Wiltshire , by comparison to yours my trips are easy - fill tank before leaving , eat at Tebay , overnight near Glasgow , top up tank next morning and do the rest of trip up to the ferry, main challenge is to stay within legal speed limit so it must have needed loads of discipline to average around 50mph when the roads were clear....

@@Back_Road_Hero I don't think that's a reason though and i'll tell you why.. Each time i went north i'd wind the window down at around south yorkshire just to get used to the cold again so realistically that would mean less miles to a gallon.Ten years in London and atleast six trips a year back home in various weather yet still getting near enough the same results. What i will say though is i generally set off late night/early morning to miss the traffic and only used the A1.Only thing i can come up with is fuel type,BP in london, tesco in Durham.

Great video. My entry level to the L322, after twelve years of 300TDI Discos, was probably lower than yours, as such I have the 3.6 with the six speed box. Thanks for the advice about knocking the gear lever into sport, in order to hold the higher gear at the lower speed. I am frequently the only occupant and as such have been from time to time frustrated by the gear change, by a relatively gentle incline. I have been immensely impressed by consumption (as indeed I always was by the 300 TDIs), perhaps one day I'll make time to try some sort of brim to brim challenge of my own. Cheers.

Most of the HGV drivers seemed to have theirs set (seems reasonable) so I found it was easier to match speed using mine. I’d a long way to go and whilst not radar cruise, it did help take the strain. I was able to adjust in 1 mph increments so it minimised throttle input. That’s was my logic anyway. Ed

Great achievement, congrats on that. Did you stick to 55mph on the motorway just to tailgate the trucks or is that supposed to be the best speed for optimal fuel economy? The video was an eye opener for me. I live in central Germany and take my 4.4 TDV8 to the French Alps twice a year, a route of around 470 miles. By the time I get there I've less than a quarter of a tank left but the fuel warning light is usually not yet on. Admittedly for the first three hours in Germany I'm often doing 100mph and Switzerland and France have 75mph and 80mph limits respectively. I guess it shows what a difference speed makes. I would never have believed that I could potentially eek out so many more miles from this type of car. Maybe I should try sticking to 55mph for the whole journey 😄 Good luck on whatever your next challenge will be.

  • @Back_Road_Hero

    @Back_Road_Hero

I didn’t stick to 55mph but chose to stay behind traffic that passed me at 55 when I was driving at 52-53mph. Never above 70, and that was only downhill. This type of driving is exhausting and soooo boring. And remember that I had the tyres pumped up hard. They’re now back to normal. I’d never usually drive so slowly and would rather spend the cash on extra fuel, but it was a good exercise in what is actually possible.

I have an ISuzu D-max 1.9d 2018 at the moment, it has 7000 miles on the trip and is showing an average since i bought it of 39.9 mpg. A journey i did yesterday of 100 miles (50 each way) to Nottingham and back home returned 48.0 mpg. The manufacturer claims 33 combined!! The trucks display is quite good too, a recent camping trip of 1000+ miles over 10 days returned 44.2 on the display and 44 at the pump. All i have done is fit tyres with an A fuel rating and removed the engine driven fan! Right i will go and watch the rest of your video.
