Reading the "Signs" from God

Ойын-сауық

Fr. Mike offers the antidote of common sense for the anxiety that often comes after making a big decision. As a campus minister, he sees many students who feel like they made the wrong decision to come to college because things are not the way they imagined. To people in these situations, he advises them to stay the course. Paraphrasing St. Ignatius of Loyola and C.S. Lewis, he says to never change your course in times of desolation when that same course rang true for you in times of consolation. Give yourself a season, time to figure things out.
If you’re about to make a big decision and don’t know which course to take, or know someone who is in that situation, check out the new book by Jackie and Bobby Angel, with Fr. Mike Schmitz, Pray, Decide, and Don’t Worry: Five Steps to Discerning God’s Will, now available for pre-order: ascensionpress.com/collection...

EXACTLY just like marriage-----EVERY day is not a bed of roses or completely being "googly eyed all in love with your spouse". Doesn't mean if it isn't perfect today that I need to leave marriage. It's about the long haul. It's a marathon not a sprint. There are days when it is ALL work and not much joy. But then there are days when it is much more joy then work. Time tells.

Friend, my favorite definition of the word "JOY" was one I got from a parish priest. It was "the conscious possession of a gift". When I use that as my definition, I can see how something difficult, or even painful, can still have joy. Faith is a Gift, Life is a gift, Love is a gift... (etc) so in the midst of a trial if i focus on gratitude for the things I already possess, it takes the edge off of the inadequacies that I have.

If my life has taught me one thing it's this, you can always choose another path if the one you are on isn't giving you fulfilment, but if you expect to be fulfilled simply by changing paths you will almost always be disappointed. My point is this, changing your situation, position, or trade really isn't that difficult. I'm a bit of gypsy so I know that. But no matter where you go you take yourself with you and unless and until you change your heart and give it over to God your soul will always be hungry and nothing you feed it will bring you any level of satisfaction. It took me longer than it should have to learn that simple lesson because I was letting the wrong things determine my success. Trust in God and avoid a life of fear and you will be okay.

I have those thoughts often. When my classes don't go well certain days, or relationships don't go well at times, I often think "welp, time for me to start thinking about becoming a priest or a friar". Like I just took a test recently and did poorly and I thought "welp this must be a sign to become a priest". These "signs" often come with anger and frustration, so THAT gives me a clue that becoming a priest is probably not something to think about when I'm angry and frustrated, like how some heroes in the Old Testament were angry and frustrated and wished for death, and God says instead "I have a better idea"

When I was young, I made this same prayer over the men I dated. I would ask Jesus to quickly reveal to me if I needed to move on. I did this till I met my now husband. God blessed me with a devout Catholic man! In retrospect, I wish that I would have asked God to prepare me to receive my future spouse. I truly believe I would have met him sooner. So if you're not doing so already, ask God to make your heart, mind, and soul ready for your husband. God already knows who he is, now you need to prepare for the day you meet!

Thank you Father Mike ... you always open my mind and you are a great guide for young and old. You are quite funny sometimes and your sermons are down to earth and helpful. I’m sure the students are quite lucky to have your guidance. 🙏

Father Mike should write his own books. He could reach and help so many more people. He's helped me so much in understanding God, God's will and just how to be.

I stopped praying the rosary because I thought about my sins as they came back one hundred times stronger and I caved like I've never caved in and totally forgot about God..and now I feel like I'm a burden and can't even go to church anymore because of what I do behind closed doors. I plan on confessing again but still the pain inside my heart is enormous and I will just confide in God to take it away as well as go back to him in true confidence and faith and love him again by doing simple acts of faith and prayer.

Being that I'm an atheist, it's good to see a pastor that has some sort reasoning skills and isn't completely deluded from reality. Unless someone is holding up a sign, it's most likely not a sign of anything but that's just how our minds work at times. The mind wants to make everything a pattern thus we are pattern seeking creatures.

Father Mike has helped me a lot in this time of my life. Just about 2 months ago I left the city that I have been living in for almost a year where I found a wonderful girlfriend who is a very faithful catholic and I love very much, and now we are on distance. At times I feel in the morning like I shouldn’t be here and I would love to go back, but I’m giving myself another few months here until I decide to stay or go back. I’m a soccer player in Europe so it’s hard moving teams and leaving people you love, but I know God is always with me.

This is very true about life as a missionary. There are predictable peaks and valleys, particularly in the first year. There are triumphant moments where you find yourself thinking, "Holy cow; I'm actually doing this!"; discouraging moments where you wonder what ever made you think you COULD do this - and intimidating moments where you can feel almost paralyzed by the overwhelming strangeness of your new country. And you have to be willing to be extremely flexible toward the unexpected (like power that is on only half the time or discovering your local grocery store is always closed on Wednesdays - when that's the only day you had to shop) - while staying committed to the and the work you discerned. It is a joyful, painful, stretching, blessing, exhausting, overwhelming, beautiful - and, at times, ugly - process. And it's the best thing I've ever done!
