I made the mistake of trying to wash a couple of small rugs, which came apart leaving parts of rug and tons of sand in the washer. It was barely draining and eventually started giving error codes F09 E01. Many many thanks to Douglas Taranow ( / @douglastaranow5292 ) who uploaded a video that got me headed in the right direction! Took the advice to open the back. There were more than 8 screws. Probably about 12. Thinking I have a newer model because when I removed the panel...the drain filter was facing the front not the side. Zero chance of being able to unscrew from the back. Followed most of this video to remove the front. Wasn't able to get the control panel off. Nonetheless was able to get a hand down in there to remove filter and clean the copious amount of stuff. Maytag has CLEARLY engineered this simple cleanup step so that only professionals or very motivated individuals can clean. Terrible. Next washer goes to the company that can best provide access to the drain filter.

Took off the back panel and the filter was positioned at the front. Tried to take the front panel off, but realized I needed to take off the top but the dryer was secured on top. Now I gotta remove the dryer to access the top. I'm essentially taking everything off!!! They really need to make it more easily accessible.

Thank you for this video. I found it helpful for cleaning the filter on my Maytag / Whirlpool MWH5630-HC1 washing machine, although I used a different method. My machine has the dryer stacked on top and no lower access panel below the door. I removed the 4 - 1/4" screws along the bottom of the front panel and determined the filter was facing the front panel and did not provide sufficient room to remove the filter without removing or at least moving, the front panel. It also would not allow it to be removed from the rear or the bottom. My solution was to pull the front panel out at the bottom and reach in from the side to remove the filter. If you had to service and /or replace the pump on this machine it would require removal of the front panel as demonstrated in this video, in my opinion.

Thanks for the video! I, like the other comments have pointed out, think accessing from the back or bottom is MUCH easier than the one-piece front panel. I personally went from the bottom as my laundry room is a tight squeeze. Fortunately the pump error was intermittent so I was able to restart the unit and drain the washer first. Just unplug and pull the unit away from the wall about 2.5 or 3 feet. Then tilt it back and let it rest against the wall to give you easy access to the bottom. Now obviously you should make sure the tilt back is far enough to be VERY stable and have another person with you to be extra safe. But mine was really easy, very stable, and no worries at all. From there is was a simple two screws to remove the thin sheet metal cover and very easy to reach the screw-on/off catch mechanism on the drain pump as shown in this video. Took literally 5 minutes. In fact I'm just leaving the panel off the bottom for even easier access next time. Plan on doing this every time change (like the smoke detector battery replacement reminder) just to apply a little smart preventative maintenance. I was shocked at how much gunk was clogging this up and can only imagine the strain this puts on the drain pump itself.

This was very helpful to me as I must have an older model and the filter was in the front. Started by trying to go through the bottom but could not get to the filter that way. One thing I would add is when you are flushing out the drum, turn the drum around a few times to make sure you get everything trapped in various places. Thanks for the video, ignore the haters.

This is the only way to access the drain filter on my mhw6630hw. It is mounted in the front, facing the front with approximately an inch to the front panel. It is not accessible via the back panel removal, I tried. It is not accessible from the bottom, I tried. Note, there is a black 1/4" hose with a plug in the end randomly laying in front of the filter plug. Unplug it to drain the majority of water out before opening the filter access plug. Also, a spring spreader would help greatly with reassembly of the outer drum seal. Otherwise, definitely a two person job. One person with pliers on either side of spring, spreading; another person putting wire in place. Huge thanks to you for posting this video!!! Made my task a lot easier! PS, this Maytag model has ruined me for Maytags.

Having to replace our washer and looking at this model I realized I didn't see an access for the filter. Welp, scratch two models from my list. Looks like Maytag and Whirlpool are taking lessons from car manufacturers. Put commonly worked on parts that "can" have easy access in difficult locations.

Thank you so much for making this video. Dog bedding and rugs had the codes flashing and me in research mode all yesterday afternoon. Maytag didn't have a parts diagram to offer without asking. Your video was way better, even if you took the scenic route. You made our job easy going through the back. Ours had 13 screws. And the part about sending more water through the drum, quart by quart really was great thinking, to be sure. We switched out a shallow roasting pan and a sheet cake pan. Easy Peasy. I think that idea someone suggested of doing this with the time changes when changing smoke alarm batteries in order to save that pump is a great idea, too. I din't think I could love this machine (5500) more. Thanks again.

Ok. This was very helpful to me. I could not access from the bottom as suggested in below comments, so i took off the top and face. I had 2 socks and coins in the drain. Replacing the clamp stomp me too, so i watched another video which used vice grip pliers to grab the wire right next to the spring and pulled it sideways to strech and place it back on. Took me about two hours total to finish, but saved me money and was a good project for me and my children. Mrfixit was also helpful. Thanks again!

@elvisandmick dude, you saved us $300. The last repair guy who inspected it charged us $100 (for the inspection only!) and then said we'd need a new pump: we knew it was all BS - there was even another repair guy who told us so! I followed your instructions, found 3 socks, 2 pennies and some other stuff in the filter. Now it works to perfection. Fwiw, I have a 2014 model. Took me 2.5 hours on the first try. Luckily I had a 11-in-1 multitool that was able to unscrew everything (btw, there are so many different screws, it's a joke - again, Maytag and all these washing machine manufacturers are racketeers). Maytag definitely designed this so that no one could do this without some knowledge / tools or at least not without getting dirty. I do encourage everyone to try it though, as it won't cost you more even if you fail / can't reassemble it. Good luck!

I want to clear some things up in this comment section, a lot of people seem to have a lot of anger towards this exact earlier model year of sorts for this model number of washer, the "MHW3505FWH". This model seems to notably be missing the bottom access panel as seen in this video, but because of this, they seem to have made changes and very quickly discontinued that model, replacing it with the model number that I have, the "MHW5100DW0". The one I have seems to be entirely identical, apart from it having a nice large bottom access panel with 2 bolts and 2 plastic fasteners. I however saw this video, and the identical front facia of the washer in this video, and assumed mine didn't have a bottom panel, so I did this drain cleaning via the rear panel, which obviously, as many people have stated, is laughably easier than going through the front like this guy did, it's only 11 bolts, and 4 little plastic things that may be already gone, if the washer is hooked into the wall. Anyways point is if you don't have the bottom panel, or if you are like me and simply can't lift the washer to access it, going through the rear to do this is honestly really easy and only took me 30 minutes in total for the entire thing, doing it singlehandedly with no help. Even the version he has in this video, if you go through the back, it really is not that bad.

Oh, in case this is helpful to anyone else. I had to play with the codes flashing and the door stying locked. A combo of turning it off, unplugging, and replugging would start the pump draining again for a while. I actually think it was a set number of minutes. I had to do this a couple three times before it was completely empty, finished and the door unlocked. It took a little nervous patience as I was concerned about more pressure on that precious pump, but it worked out. Also, ours was a super tight fit into a w/d closet. Difficult to move. Opening the door, and being careful to get a hold that didn't risk damage or strain on the gasket, finding a solid handhold, even I could lean back and slide that baby out scootch by scootch.

Access panel door is on the bottom. Tilt washer so it will stay ~°50 angle. If its gonna fall, youd rather it falls back. There is a access port in the center. It is held by 2 clips and 2 Torx heads. (You can also use a socket wrench) I managed to clean my filter by just removing 1 clip and 1 screw. Bent it just a bit, but I don't mind with the amount of time saved. It was thin metal anyways. I bemt ot back after I finished. Hope this helps ya.

The absolute easiest way is to tilt the washer back, take the bottom panel off - only two screws and two plugs, and from this video you can see how accessible the filter is. When you tilt it back you can use a wet vac to siphon the water from the washer (open front door) and there will be very little water left. Twenty minutes from start to end.

I have a model MHW6000XW2. I opened the back hoping the pump filter was accessible, but no chance, it faced the front panel. Really poor placement design, I had to take off the top, and two front panels to access it. Look in the back first, but also consider how accessible the pump filter is when you buy! The filter was a mess and stunk, and the washer worked after I cleaned it, but it turned into an all day job. Placement of the pump filter trap and its accessibility really needs consideration by Maytag.

Hey there I have the same machine as if u take the back plate off is quicker only 8 or so screws and u get right in there to clean the pump faster and what I do when I put the trap door back up is I put a little dab of Vaseline on the rubber gasket as it keeps it from ever leaking and won't dry rot the rubber gasket I just put a little on my finger and I'll wipe it off my finger as I rotate it on the gasket and once in a while I'll take the gasket carefully out and I'll clean it with a rag and Vaseline as the cleaner for the rubber gasket that my frend will make it last for many many years I bought a replacement and I kept it in the bag that it came with tape on the back panel so if I needed one it's there because I clean my pump once a month to keep the machine running smoothly as the pump will last for ever if always clean ! The problem with new machines is more maintenance hope this helps taking it apart threw the front takes way more longer then the back more easy

*Just thought I'd leave this here, if it might help others. First unplug it and plug it back in after 20 minutes, to unlock it. Don't push any buttons, it will do its own thing. After it unlocks, go ahead and vacum out the inside, in case there is hair clogging it. Then prop up and do exactly what you said. Just unplug, prop it up, unscrew and clean it. I put 1 cup baking soda and 1 cup vinegar on the inside and hit clean machine after doing this. This just helps wash out any extra gunk. I don't use affresh...ever. When I clean my machine, I only use this method. I've had my machine since 2015, and have only had to clean the drain plug once. I do others laundry, so we wash about 5 to six loads a day. Blankets are done twice a week. That's another 5 loads on those days. My other Maytag kept clogging up, and eventually wore out. Once I took the advice to start using baking soda and vinegar, I've had no issues.*

Tilt the washer ~ 50 degrees backwards. (If it falls, you want it to fall backwards, (Away from you.)) You can remove 2 clips, and 2 torx head screws in order to remove the access port. (I personally just removed the clip and torx head screw on one side. Then let the access panel hang down.)

Useful video - I started by looking at comments so I went in the back, but my model of Maytag (Maxima XL Steam) has the filter facing FORWARD. it is almost impossible to get the filter back on properly accessing it from the back. I had to eventually disassemble it from the front as shown here to get it working. Also very annoyingly, the filter is mounted low and fixed to the front rail, so you can't get a pan underneath it, and got water all over my floor. Clearly not designed to be serviced easily. So glad the new ones are more sane with the filter facing sideways or towards the rear. See this video for clear instructions kzread.info/dash/bejne/mJdk26eiiNS3j5c.html

It's been a long time since I had this problem so my memory is foggy on what the machine can/will do even when it's showing the e01 and f09 codes. Will the machine still perform the 'drain & spin' cycle? If it will do that cycle, the first thing I would try is pouring one or two buckets of clean water into the front of the machine, closing the door, and starting the drain & spin cycle. And maybe repeat that fill/drain operation a time or two. That might help the machine dump any remaining stuff that's plugging up the system. Note that, if you do this, you should probably again check the filter to make sure it's not catching more junk. Please report back! Good luck!

Mine has a bottom panel with 2 screws and 2 plastic friction plugs. I pulled the machine forward about 18” then rocked it backwards to expose the bottom. I took the panel off (the plastic fasteners were the biggest headache). I could easily put a fairly large plastic tote underneath and didn’t spill a drop. It took me about 10 minutes total after I gathered my 1/4” socket and my flat screwdriver (for the plastic plug fasteners). I contemplated not reinstalling the bottom panel to make it easier next time.
