Get a container of Lysol wipes, or the like, and use them to go through the rubber gasket all around up inside all the nooks and crannies. You'll see it gets very black and that can also be generating odors too, because mold can grow in there. I wind up using quite a few wipes every few months just to keep it clean

Omg, I’m about to cry. I would never have bought the machine had I known this. I’m a 67 year old woman with neck and back issues from caring for my disabled adult child for 34 years, no way on earth I can do this. Last machine’s clean out was at the front bottom corner, easy peasy. Guess I’ll be calling the local Maytag service repairman on a regular basis. The booklet I was given doesn’t even have this info! 😣

I agree with you. I'm 67, live alone and have no children but lots of dogs. Mine stopped draining so it is probably full of hair. No way I can do this. I wish I had known before, I would have bought a different machine. I guess I am going to be on good terms with the repairman. The repairman must have been in on this design.

Thank you. This saves a lot of time. I might add that you should completely remove the hose from both ends. Unlike the small amount of change and other crap you found, I found 3.76 in change, a screw, and after pulling the hose off a complete sock!

Ok. I did look at John’s method and I came right back here. I would like to mention that I popped the four plastic pins out and then just swung the pump out to access the coin tray. The pins are SUPER easy to remove and replace. Removing the coin tray showed me that I had a small screw hiding in there and messing things up. Thanks for the video!

THIS IS EXCELLENT INFO! THANK YOU! This works for Maytag Washer model MHW 5630HC2 as well. To clarify a couple things… most videos are telling you you need to disassemble about the entire washer to get to the drain filter. YOU DO NOT. This video shows you how to easily get to the BACK of the filter, take off the hose and clean the filter from behind, without going in from the front… and taking the whole washer apart! GENIUS! Just be sure to reach into the filter tube and clean out all the gunk in there, as well as the flexible tube that you detach from the washer basin… as he talks about. Since you will now be doing this every 6 months or so… invest in the 2” clamp he talks about! As a Professional Handyman, and DIY guy… trust me, it’s worth it! Good Luck… YOU CAN DO IT! I would have charged you $200!!! Lol!

Just a heads up, if your washer is mounted on a pedestal, instead of removing the pedestal you can access this all thru the back. There are a lot of screws but that is it. No wiring involved. This is a little longer process but still better than trying to remove the pedestal. Many of the other tips from this video were spot on. Towel, hose clamp, etc. Thank you.

I had the same problem for the past few weeks with the washer not draining and giving me the constant “5d” code. After watching another video, I was not looking forward to disassembling the entire machine just to get to the filter. I then ran across your video and I was very skeptical about it taking 5 minutes to do this job….well it took me about 4 minutes and I’m happy to say that not only am I .07 richer but I was able to pull out a partial insole from the filter that was blocking 95% of the inlet. Thanks so much for this video. You just saved me a couple hundred dollars.

Found a quarter, a penny, the part of the pen that holds the ink plus the tip, lots of dog hair, some pieces of plastic I'm assuming candy wrappers at some point, piece of jewelry and one of the kids' necklace or bracelet charms. Working like a champ again.

My neighbor washed a small area rug that disintegrated during the wash. It left a foot long slug of compacted rug fiber in the drain and hose. The little drain hose did not work so I had to remove the large tub hose to drain about 7 gallons of water before I could clean the pump. Made a mess and was very inconvenient. This video was excellent and saved me from removing the front of the washer and causing a flood with the tub full of water. I guess a removable panel below the door was too smart/expensive and would cause less people to require service calls. The recommendation for the screw type hose clamp gets a thumbs up. That pinch ring is more trouble than it's worth mainly due to the position you have to be in to access it.

I swear, no lie, something always tears up when my husband is traveling out of state. This time, washing machine. This exact model. You saved me this weekend from being super frustrated and likely hateful with my husband. lol. I can’t stand not having a working washing machine. I had my 15 yr old daughter hold it backward for me while I did exactly as you showed us to do. Unfortunately, I also didn’t use a catch bucket because you said it would be two tablespoons of water. I’m obviously not very smart and should’ve known that info wouldn’t pertain to my situation. I had a drum full of water when my machine decided to stop working and all that water poured out everywhere! So use a catch bucket people! If you have any water in the drum at all do use a bucket. It took 5 large thick towels to soak up all the water. Anyway, besides that, everything was spot on and so easy! I didn’t have one of those metal pieces that you used instead of the clamp for reassembly. I had to use the clamp and it was difficult just as you said! I’m just praying it’s on there well enough! Again, this works and I really appreciate it so so much! I had a bra insert, a penny, two earrings, a screw, a large thicker piece of tape, a plastic straw that goes into Capri Suns, a bead for bracelet making and a couple other tiny plastic things of my husbands. I’ll be doing this from now on. So thankful for this video! Trying to figure this out took several hours out of my day today. Time to kick back!

So glad. If you have more space you could probably lay it flat and access that way. But it's VERY heavy. Must have help. Like another said, disconnect the hose at the other end as well to get other potential things out. May not need to use a hose clamp on that side. Much easier access. I had to do it again. Also, use a washcloth soaked with lysol or some other disinfectant to throughly wipe the interior of the door gasket. Lots of odors in there. Keep rinsing the rag and do it again. Cheers.

You're welcome. If you have a bud, the dryer really doesn't weigh much. It's just awkward. So if you can get it down and out of the way, you'll be done in 15 min and then get back up. The washer...that's a different story. Its a beast. So SAFELY tipping against the wall seems a lot easier than laying it down and trying to get it back up.

I tried attempting two other ways, going from the back which failed miserably, and then attempted to remove the front panel , but chickened out quite quickly. This solution however, was quick and easy. If you're not comfortable with removing the hose, and/or don't want to deal with a new hose clamp, you can access the filter without doing so. You don't have to remove any screws or similar. There's enough space between the filter and the front of the machine, to unscrew and pull the filter out, as designed. You just have to reach around the assembly where the hose attaches to. It can be a little awkward, but once you find the right angle, so you can apply the right leverage to unscrew (and tighten it) it's super simple. See this video to know what you're reaching for: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gX-lqNOFZq_QpMY.html (note: I'm only sharing this video for illustration purposes, I am not suggesting you cut a hole in the front of your washer)

Anything is possible. You'd have to do it from the front as there is not a lot of space from underneath. But you can easily scrape your finger across the filter and grab what you feel. My guess is you'll get most it not all of it. Give it a try if you haven't already. I'd also be concerned if a cutting blade were to take something with it...like wiring

That's great. Someone else also reported the stacked issues. The dryer, comparatively is pretty light. 2 people shoud be able to easily lift of off...but then space to set it down? Thanks for the feedback.

I actually didn't have any codes. You might have something further downstream toward the pump. May be worth taking off the hose completely and seeing if anything in the tub or pump

I think anything is possible but have to be careful of any harnesses. The other thing is the dryer is pretty light. 2 people could easily lift it (compared to the washer) so maybe a couple times a year ask a friend for 15 min and knock it out.

@@lizzard414 Hi. Regarding the video I made, I didn't take a panel off. I slid it back away from the wall and then tipped it backwards to lean against the wall. It takes a couple tries to get that right. But once you get it to where it leans itself or tips itself against the wall, then you can get down underneath of it very carefully and everything that you need to work on is exposed. That's what you see in the video. That allows you to get access to what you need to without having to take the whole machine apart. I have a very narrow laundry room and I don't have enough space to lay it down on the floor. So be careful and get some help, if needed, to tip it back because the washing machine is very heavy.

It looks to be identical, only the color is different. You should be good to go. Easy does it. Remember to take chlorox type wipes and wipe down the interior gasket ring that seals the door. You'll probably go through a lot.

Thanks Jon. kzread.info/dash/bejne/dWeFlJiBpsesprQ.html Update Dec. 2023 - Pull washer at least 24" from wall to tip it back. 24.5 worked perfectly. 2nd time...small allen wrench, screwdriver bit, collar tab, bra pad. The latter was causing the bad smell.

Hi. Where I disconnected the hose, you stick your finger in there and do a sweep. That's when you'll get the trash out. The filter itself is perforated plastic, only about 1" square. You can easily clean it with your finger. More things can be trapped in the hose as well...like a bra pad I found last week 🫣

@@DaddyDFL Thank you, every load I wash leaves hairs, blobs of lint and such on the inside door, globbed up in the rubber drum thing, and all over clothing. I separate my clothing properly, I've just never had a machine that doesn't rinse away all the bits. I have to run an empty short wash to get it all out after every load (because this machine also doesn't have a simple "Rinse and Drain" cycle). I've also got a dispenser full of water and diluted detergent every load too.

@@Rae_HairUAre Interesting. I haven't seen this. You probably already know this but best to leave the door open to let it dry and with each wash and clean the gap in the gasket on the bottom. Make sure the holes are clean. If it's not draining well then maybe things are backing up. We don't have furry pets so not sure how much they contribute. But my wife and 3 daughters have long hair. They leave evidence all the time. We run VERY large loads and haven't had any lint issues.

Horrible design Maytag! This is offered as a stackable washer. Imagine what you need to do if you stack a dryer on top of this just to clean the filter. Most other manufactures have an access door right in front. All you need is a finger nail and the ability to turn clockwise. Companies do this intentionally so you have to call a plumber to charge you $500 just to perform simple maintenance. P.S. do not ever get underneath anything heavy without some kind of support or dunnage. In this case I would use a brick or jack or anything you can put under the unit to prevent it from coming down.
