Read-Along & Reaction to Stephen King's "New" Story: THE FIFTH STEP
Ойын-сауық

"The Fifth Step" is written by Stephen King, and first published in Harper's Magazine, back in 2020. Here is the link to the story:

Today, we are celebrating the upcoming release of Stephen King's newest collection of stories: YOU LIKE IT DARKER.
I will be reading one of those stories, THE FIFTH STEP, for the very first time, and as I do I'll be chiming in with my first-impressions and reactions to each twist-and-turn...
I have no idea if this will be a fun way for folks on KZread to experience King's work -- or if my commentary will be more annoying than entertaining -- so feel free to let me know in the comments if you would like to see more of these kinds of reaction videos...
You'll also notice that

Notice how the names of the two characters are Jameson and Jack like the names of whiskeys.
reminds me of 'the man who loved flowers' but still love it!

I thought the same.
2 things stands out. 1st the guy never really told Jamison anything about him just in case he doesn't die. And 2nd Jamison said, "So I'm your first victim," but thought twice about it. Stephen King is a master.
That was pretty good, but where's the rest of The Long Walk? I'm hankering for more (Really enjoy your stuff) 👍

do more. do more. loved it
I read The Fifth Step upon its release. I enjoyed the heck out of it, though my fascination was well and truly amalgamated with shock in the last minute or so of the story. I thoroughly liked the lot. I didn't think I'd enjoy the read/commentary combo, but I'm happy to say I think you pulled it off extremely well. Cheers, man. Cheers. I found your account a month or so ago. I've greedily consumed many of your videos since. I'm very glad I found your channel. You're very good at what you do, fellow Constant Reader. Keep up the great work.
I am SO glad I have discovered this channel. The AI images along with the story read aloud is just a fascinating experience, as I am a non English speaker so I love listening to a good steady narration. You do it so well!. Thank you!

@@stephenkingbookclub1054 at least you utilized it well. 😊 I will most likely get the new book of shorts, but I’m tempted to wait, and discover them with you and your viewers. Reading can be such an isolating hobby. With this format, we get to enjoy as a community of book loving nerds 😆 Oh, and, I caught those parentheses!!!
I truly honestly and genuinely enjoyed this, thank you.

I read it in Bulgarian from the book. Then, I discovered this video. It's so cool to listen to the story in English the 2nd time!
I love love love this format! Pls do more in the future. ❤
Despite it being your voice, I'm hearing the dialog in Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro's voices. I could see them starring in this short film.

Just stumbled across your channel and being a huge Stephen King fan I’m always on the lookout for a channel that takes shorts and brings out a little more life from them. You did an excellent job with this story and I hope to come back and do it all over again.

KINGO!! That just cracks me up! It should totally be a thing. Is it already a thing and I just didn't know about it? Why didn't I know about it? Aahhhhhgggg!
love Mr King - he's the master of tales As soon as the 5th stepper said he had beaten the classmate for no reason, other than he didn't like the kid, red flags were flying.... I didn't trust him at all at that point, and was so hoping Jamison would just leave the bench and walk away. Good story; thank you for the great presentation of it Looking forward to more!
I note the reference to an old short story, 'Last Wrung on the Ladder'. I also didn't faile to notice the guy's villainy - not because of the Yankees logo but because Jack was so evidently nondescript, like many of SK's baddies. like you, it was all to innocuous and I was just waiting for the twist. Intriguingly, it's made me call into question this Jack's entire story. I'll be hanging out for the collection upon its release. Ngā mihi.

Really enjoyed this! I also thought “Well. I’d be a dead duck” because I would’ve listened too 😁
Ok, this was a good idea, I really liked hearing a wonderful short story and liked the kitschy bingo card. "Kingo" reminds me of Kingu, a Sumerian mythic king consort of Tiamat, the serpentine queen of the primordial depths.

I LIKE THIS !
I had a feeling from the beginning that Jack was going to admit to being a murderer but I didn't see it coming that he would murder Jameson
Gotta love a good conversation between Leo DiCaprio and Robert Deniro
The best part is the King-o! Great, great read-along! I thought that the confession would be related to something about how J's wife died, perhaps. This character building could be used in a bigger novel, to let us know what happened with this stranger.

Thanks... Yes, I does feel like it could be part of something bigger. And I noticed people in the comments have been wondering if his sponsor "Randy" is actually Randall Flagg!
Wow! When I got clean and sober one guy owned that he hit and ran someone. He tried to turn himself in but it was so long ago the cops couldn't find any record of it.
Loved this we could all feel how sinister it was getting as the story progressed

I really like this format if I have already read the story. I have always really liked your use of stills for your story telling. Today's characters look like De Niro and DeCaprio, which makes me wonder again...where you get your art. It is always very good and appears original. It always suits the story very well. Also, when the next part of "The Long Walk" going to release? I think that is my absolute favorite of yours so far....

Stephen King short stories are a bit like the parcel in 'pass the parcel' you never know what the surprise will be or who is gonna get it. Rather like the build up in Dolans Cadillac, you are so invested in the tale, the punch at the end is always a shock.
I was expecting the I killed my wife but was not Jameson. Also I love reaction reads.
