    Exactly right David. Some reactors don’t know Tim is the bass and they think he’s a tenor…we have to say NO! Yeah, it’s a bit of a switcheroo with Tim and Chance. Chance is quite capable of going low so this is nice. It’s a good rendition. Glad you liked it. Good analysis. You would love I Can’t Outrun You with Chance in the lead….so good! I was so excited when I saw what you were reacting to this time around! I think I may have peed a little. Lol. Oh, this was perfect timing, David! I had actually forgotten you hadn't reacted to this one yet because of just how well you understand the group dynamic with Home Free, then you come through and surprise me with the reaction itself. Oh, wonderful!! The look on your face when the song started, when it became apparent it was Tim singing and just how high in his range he was singing, was priceless. Exactly as it should be. And, you're correct about his tone sounding very different in his upper range. That's always something that surprises me; knowing it's the same singer yet hearing a different "voice" come from them. Then, of course, we have the Chance drop. It's so easy to forget, as most of us often do, that Chance was the bass in his own group. One that placed VERY well in their own season of the Sing Off, may I add. Season 2, iirc. ( Streetcorner Symphony, if you have a chance for some personal listening I would certainly recomend their version of Down On The Corner. ) So pushing his lower end isn't something new to Chance, nor is what being a bass in a song entails. Then he comes along and reminds us with things like this. He may not be as freakishly low as a Tim or a Geoff but that doesn't make him any less effective or dynamic when used properly, as he was here. The song...The song is heartbreaking when you listen, and think about, the lyrics. " What we have isn't good. It's nobody's fault. I don't love you, but I DO care, and I don't want to hurt you. Leaving, as we should, is going to hurt us both. What do we do here? " Nowhere is that in the lyrics...yet it's everywhere in the lyrics. And the way the song ends...Did they leave? Did they stay? What happened? We don't know because, by the end of the song, THEY didn't know. You hurt so much for the people who the song is about. Partially because we've all been in situations either just like this or very close, and it makes us remember our own turmoil during that time. Before we get into your breakdown of the song and the video I have to say something about the way you, David, present unfamiliar information to people. As soon as most reactors start talking about chord structure, tonics, and note progression I tune out. It's not something I understand, nor is it something I'm going to "get" right away. The way most reactors present this information is to either treat us, the audience, as though we're stupid and don't understand the simplest of things, or they treat us as though we've been delving into such things for years and understand what they're trying to say completely. You, however, present the same information in such a way as to not dumb it down so that those listening feel stupid hearing the explanation, nor are such experts we have full understanding of what you're saying. Sure, there are SOME things we should all know, based on previous discussions of the same topics ( you know, IF we were paying attention ). Other things you'll take the time to explain in a bit more detail, more than likely using examples of things we've all heard before that are like what you're explaining. There are things you mentioned in this video I still don't get but, because of the way you've presented the information? I'm going to look up, on my own, those things because I SHOULD know them. Any time someone can present information in such a way that it makes me interested enough to learn more...that's a rare gift, IMO, David. So, thank you. Back to the topic at hand... I never paid a lot of attention to the video itself. Unless something just visually jumps out and grabs my attention that's the way of most videos. Hearing you explain just how subtle the folks behind the camera were being with setting, lighting, and motion, though? Very interesting. Very thought provoking. I have a feeling I'll be watching videos with a new eye from now on, looking for those small things that push a story forward. This was one of your best videos yet, sir. And not just for the surprise that it was, either. It makes me so excited to see what you do next. There are so many things, groups, solo artists, musical pieces, documentary style things, that I would love to see your reaction to! I'm exploding over here! Lol. For your Home Free journey, though, I would love to get your take on their version of Crosby, Stills, and Nash's Helplessly Hoping. It's a beautifully haunting song, especially the way the boys do it. That is, as always, just a suggestion. In the meantime I hope that you and yours have been, and continue to be, well. Thank you for all the hard work you put into this channel and the videos you've posted on it. It may not always seem like it but it IS appreciated. ( P.S. What is it with you and not letting me get out of the comment section for less than three paragraphs, anyway? Lol. )

    I also loved that wavering "oha...oha...oha..." background of voices. Going with your nautical theme, it's almost like waves rushing over you. As for the tone of Chance's low note, I spent a lot of years living in a port city and that tone wasn't like a ship horn, it was like a lighthouse horn in the fog. Those are two different pitches.

  • @davidkreacts

    @davidkreacts

    Ooh - I like that interpretation. Also, good to know re the horns - I don't have experience of a lighthouse horn - I've heard a bell, but otherwise only lights. I haven't ever lived near a port though.

    Home Free really blew our minds with this one. Tim has said that he practices his tenor and works on high notes as it strengthens his low notes. He was late coming into his bass voice and was a state winner as a tenor in Texas while in school. (Lotsa competition in a state that large.) Home Free is releasing the third installment of their Stargazer Trilogy. These are original songs from their newest album written by Austin. I would love to see you do a reaction to the entire trilogy.

    They chose to sing this in its original key as sung by Cam, a female country singer. Just proves their lack of having a female in the group is no detriment--they just let their BASS handle it! 🤣 LOVE the versatility of our amazingly talented fellas!! 🥰. And Adam Rupp's versatile percussion is often overlooked. He does a really complex drum fill during the big rising crescendo. On the rest of the song he is doing lots of fun little flicks and delicate drum and hand clapping sounds. It's a slow motion and inevitable train crash, but no one is admitting it, which will just make it worse. It's like you have a couple really ethical and strong people, but the match isn't right. Their ethics and loyalty turn into a kind of denial of reality and all the eventual pain that will bring when it all comes down, which it must. It is an important thing to remember that every "good" personality trait has its downside.

  • @davidkreacts

    The detail vocal percussionists go into astonishes me - the more I listen to music by any of the big a capella groups, the more little embellishments I hear - it's really impressive. Excellent description - and what a suspenseful and sad situation to be in. It's a heart-rending story.

    I, personally, think Home Free really bring out the emotion in the song, much more than Cam's version. I've listened to hers with the video which I found to be distracting from the meat of the song. And, months later, to just the audio to see how it was without the visuals. I missed the emotion that Home Free brings AND the clarity of the lyrics. This is one if my favs from Home Free.

    I am an unabashed Pentaholic and VoicePlay fan, and while I admire Home Free's talents (they fully deserve to rank co-equal at the top of the a capella world , imo), my 'meh' feelings for most country music means I don't listen to them with quite as much frequency as the other two groups. That said, this song is just so damn gorgeous that, even apart from the "musical chairs" aspect, it's top of the list of their watchable videos for me. The original by Cam is just as gorgeous, and the video is amazing. I had to go watch it to see what changes they made, and to be frank, they stayed really true to the original music, with some added vocal flourishes here and there. Her video, I have to add, makes me cry. I watch your videos religiously, as you ALWAYS bring stuff to my attention that simply never made it above the threshold of my ability to notice overtly, while still affecting my overall gut reactions to the videos. Thanks! (I can't WAIT for you to get to the new one by VP, "Seven Nation Army.")

    One of the great things about the groups that I have picked up is that they all do something that anyone can appreciate, and that's very cool. I haven't checked out the original Cam video yet - toying with saving it for a future reaction - but I'm looking forward to it either way. Thank you for watching my videos - I'm very glad to hear that you get so much out of them. :-) I will get to 7NA in due course - I've been flitting between newer and older videos recently, but that one is right in the top tier of my intended reactions.

    I prefer HF'S version to Cam's. I also liked that HF did not copy any of Cam's video. She had an interesting Amelia Earnhart-type storyline, which I did like. And your reaction to Tim and Chance switching things around was perfect!

    I enjoy both, though I confess it's hard not to be partial to HF, partly because of how well it's done, but also now that I think about it, I did see and hear it first, and I think that's an influence also. Cam's is a superb performance and video too.

    You've had a lot of good comments already - I second the recommendations to look up the From the Vault videos if you're doing a song from 2016-2018 (they're the Patreon behind the scenes from the time, and they're releasing them pretty much in date order, so that's how far they've got) and for the Stargazer Trilogy, the third part of which is coming out very soon. When it comes to the country thing - Home Free started as a standard modern acapella group, doing a range of pop etc, but they auditioned for the Sing-Off with a couple of country songs, they had Tim and Austin by that point, and after a serious debate, they agreed to be billed as the "country" group, and so they have been ever since. They'll put a country spin on a pop song, cover a country classic, or even go outside the genre from time to time, but as you say, country is now their home base.

  • @davidkreacts

    Appreciate the reinforcement for the recommendations. Will be checking out the From the Vaults - I am very interested to see their processes etc. - and the Stargazer Trilogy is now on my list also. It seems like a shame that they had to get pigeonholed with a category when they are clearly so versatile, but at the same time the country vibe does set them apart from the other major groups, and they certainly do it well!

    Wonderful reaction. Thank you! Yes...we veteran Home Fries always ask reactors to, "...wait until you get used to each singer's niche, before you react to 'Mayday'." Even we, as "well-seasoned veterans" were TOTALLY blown away, the first time we heard it. 😀 Yup...there you go, right away, with Tim. You now need to listen to "Greensleeves," with Peter Hollens and Tim. They BOTH have fabulous ranges, and they go up and down the scale so EASILY throughout the song--especially in one part, where Tim will really grab your attention, as she just floats upward...seriously. Regarding the group's vocal range overlaps. In 2019, I made a chart. I can't link to it here, because my whole comment might disappear, but I'll tell you where to find it. Go to my channel and then to the ABOUT page. Then look down to the Links category. The third link (which gets used a lot) goes to that chart, where it's nested on my site. Enjoy. \0/

    Austin can make his voice cry with the best of them. Check out I'm Not Supposed to Love You Anymore, Neon Moon, or even Bring Him Home for a couple examples. Tim's voice didn't drop until late in high school and he deliberately worked to keep his tenor-ability. Adam is always spot on - never too much. Given his abilities, he could easily overpower almost any song, much less a subtle one like this. But he knows where the line is and never oversteps it. This was a chance to show off both Tim's high AND Chance's bass, which hadn't really been shown off much before. By the way, HF sang this in the same key as Cam did.
