Reaction-Analysis to VoicePlay's cover of "The Dragonborn Comes" from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Музыка

This is my reaction to and analysis of VoicePlay's cover of "The Dragonborn Comes" feat. Omar Cardona. Original song from the game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, written by Jeremy Soule. Dovahzul lyrics also by Jeremy Soule.
I am joined for the analysis section of this video by Angie Woollard of Confessions of a Chord Junkie. www.confessionsofachordjunkie.com
NOTE: Unfortunately I lost all of my audio from the reaction section of this video. To that end, I have placed the analysis first, and the reaction is at the end with no sound from me.

He doesn't always do that. There's one this month - I think still coming? - where he just obstinately stares at the mic not making a sound! :-P

I’m not sure you caught it but throughout the song they sing “the dragon born comes” which is predicting a future event. but at the very end they sing, “the dragon born’s come.” Because now he has arrived, which is why they were ready to leave on their quest at the end. Just a tidbit I noticed. ❤

Nothing is better than learning from two different knowledgeable folks during this reaction. Plus bonus house lion. Instead of Ted-talk, it should be renamed Tim-talk.

There is so much that makes this piece brilliant. Geoff said that arranging for the voices that you have rather than the voices you wish you had is imperative. How they manage the first time with anyone is amazing. Ashley Diane was a last minute featured artist when they changed the piece that they were going to do. They didn't know her previously and she was brilliant in If I Were a Rich Man/Girl.

I LOVE Ashley Diane! So I went looking all over for her & finally found a few pictures of her in a Facebook page of a small singing group. Then she finally posted a link to If I Were A Rich Man/Girl on that page & everyone was congratulating her! So I got the idea that was the 1st time she'd gotten to perform with a top notch group! Since then I'm always there when I see her name! She's amazing! 💕 Ya know, since being involved with my area's community theater groups & watching talent on KZread that big music companies ignore, I'm much less impressed with those who reach the big time through managers who wheel & deal big $$ contracts. A lot of them aren't even as good as those WE enjoy watching & listening to. JMO. 😊P

I've so been waiting for this one! Sorry for your sound issues but very glad you still included the initial reaction at the end. I feel like I know you well enough now to know what you were probably saying. I think this was the song that really made me fall in love with Omar's voice.

I am so glad that you pointed out Cesar’s first line. That juxtaposition of Cesar’s clear (non-breathy) and deeper part of his register with Geoff’s incredibly growly low low tones is my favorite part of the song. There’s something just so beautiful about the combination of the two. I would love to hear him access that part of his voice more often. I also had heard that Jeremy had done the language. I think it was remarked that he did it almost overnight and it was so amazing that he made it rhyme in both languages. I’m not sure but I believe I heard it on the Charismatic Voice when she analyzed it. I have no musical training, but I got a lot out of the video anyway. I always do learn something, but I really enjoyed hearing the two of you comment on the same parts of the piece making slightly different points based on your own experience and training. I might be wrong on this, but I believe I’ve heard that that thump thump thump sounds was Layne tapping or holding the microphone against his throat. I don’t think VoicePlay uses a plug-in without it being very obvious that it’s not vocal.

Added: Someone far wittier than I imagined the conversation between Omar and VoicePlay for this. It went something like: Of course I want to collaborate with you…. I have to wear green makeup?…And pointy ears?…. And I’m singing in what language? 😂🐉 It just made me laugh so I thought I would share it.

Just finishing the analysis part. I don’t think they use plug ins. From what I understand these are truly all voices, sometimes with effects added. But they do double track when needed.

FYI;: An Imperial barbarian, a Dunmer battlemage, a Bosmer archer, a Breton necromancer, and a Nord Jarl hang out in the Palace of Kings ready to belt out a classic. Geoff is an Imperial Barbarian, Cesar a Dunmer (dark elf) Battlemage, Omar a Bosmer (wood elf) Archer, Eli a Breton Necromancer, and Layne a Nord Jarl. They admit to using Melodyne but I think mostly for timing and blending rather that pitch correction, as I do hear Geoff being slightly pitchy at times. I don't know if most people hear it. Cesar had to lie down on the floor between takes as his shoulders were sore from the weight of the chain mail shirt. Re pitch correction, I watch Fil from Wings of Pegasus analysing singers for pitch correction. It's worth seeing what he does. And yes VP know Omar well. On that note, compare Anthony Gargiula in Golden Hour, his first time with them, and the later Creep, or Seven Nation Army, or the latest, Black Hole Sun.

My son currently works as a designer tech for Bethesda Gaming. He also won (thru audition) the chance to join the Baltimore Symphany Choir in singing & recording the music for Star Field! He's been a gamer (a LOT of Final Fantasy) since middle school, so he's living his dream job of designing video games! He's currently working at getting rid of any "jicky" issues from Star Field. 😊

Possibly my favourite Voiceplay production (music+video)! I love the epic, almost orchestral sound, the set and costumes, the incredible attention to details visual and musical... I think I read somewhere that Cesar is a dark elf here. The armour was so heavy that he needed to lie down in between takes! You probably have your video game month schedule all filled up, but just in case, you might want to check out Alina Gingertail if you don't know her already. She does amazing multitrack covers of various soundtracks.

This was what was previously described as the characters Voiceplay portrayed: Geoff is an Imperial Barbarian, Cesar a Dunmer (dark elf) Battlemage, Omar a Bosmer (wood elf) Archer, Eli a Breton Necromancer and Layne a Nord Jarl. Thought the reaction was unique, well analyzed, and fun. Keep up the great videos!!!😊

Angie, I am so glad you called out Cesar’s entry to the song. It is my favorite part of the song as well. And often, because Cesar follows Geoff in these arrangements, he gets overlooked by reactors and analysts. I enjoyed watching you both react. Thanks for the fun.
