A tradition in both Melbourne and Sydney although the Melbourne ones were always better!!

John sang "you'll never walk alone" to the Australian troops which brought one or two of them to tears. It's beautiful to watch but he's older in that video.

Carols by Candlelight are held every Christmas Eve at the Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne. It's summer here and thousands of people flock to the gardens with their kids, even babies and wave their candles to the music. The performers love it too and many return each year, donating their time to raise money for charity. It's televised and like many others I would never miss it. 🥰

Yes Carols is on every year John was at just about every Carols by Candle light for years when he was still Johnny Oh and I think you watched Jimmy Barnes and his son David Campbell singing the second song You'll Never Walk Alone. IF not...you definately need to lol

This version of “you’ll never walk alone” is my favorite and such a masterpiece musically and vocally. The passion and emotion John puts into this is nothing short of angelic. So beautiful. Originally this song was part of the Roger’s and Hammerstein musical carousel in 1945 and also sung by Frank Sinatra in 1945 and a lot of covers after.

Sadly we may never hear John sing again due to his Cancer. A true champion.

Every state and territory, and all the cities and towns have there own Carol By Candlelight in the lead up to Christmas; it is an annual tradition.

This always makes me cry . John was up for everything and he does such a beautiful rendition and he wonderful back up singers well there was none better . You'll Never Walk Alone was by Rodgers and Hammerstein for the musical Carousel in 1945. In 1963, British group Gerry and The Pacemakers did a cover, which became the most successful version. It was first sung in 1965 at Liverpool's FA Cup Final, with whom it became closely associated; the song took a much deeper and more tragic meaning after the Hillsborough disaster of 1989, when a human crush at the stadium in Sheffield injured hundreds and 96 fans lost their lives. It is an eerie but awe inspiring feeling to here thousands of fans sing it before every Liverpool FC game. Other singers to have performed this song are Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. Gerry and The Pacemakers were part of the Merseybeat, of which The Beatles led the British Invasion on the popular American music scene.

I was actually at this event. Carols by Candlelight, held at the Sydney Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, is by far the largest Christmas event held in our Nation. It is not unheard of for over 100,000 people to turn up (weather permitting), as there are substantial parklands surrounding this enclosure where families can listen to the music and picnic the night away.

Jimmy Barnes and his son David Campbell did an awesome job of singing this song many years later for Carols By Candelight. Its an absolute must watch that you wont regret.

Yes we love our Carols nights every year both Sydney goes first (usually the Saturday night before Christmas) and then Melbourne on Christmas eve. Always huge crowds and lots of love and joy and of cause candles. Both are fund raiser nights for various charities and we always find our huge artists giving of their time to perform and loving it. We miss John doing these shows as he always turned up and did a fantastic job so heal fast John we love and miss you mate. It is an interesting place the Sidney Music Myer Bowl. Directly in front of the stage is about 4 or so rows of seating and from there sloping upwards is a massive sprawling lawn built like a small to medium sized amplitheatre. Past the lawn it drops off and there are toilets and other small facilities underneath the raised bankment. There is a huge trumpet shaped roof built over the stage and rows of seating, but the rest is open to the elements. Many artists that have performed there at first scoffed at the place when they first saw it. Until someone told them to go to the very back of the lawn and listen. They were blown away at the echo and sheer resonating sound that the place makes. You can hear everything even from the very back. Probably also why it directs the sound over a huge green wedge area of parks and gardens and away from the city and other buildings which are only a 5 minute walk away from behind the site.

Since 1959 Carols By Candlelight at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl Kings Domain Park just across the Yarra River from CBD Melbourne is a very special night for Victorians. Performers/sponsors/audience donate time/money to support charities to help others who need it. REGARDLESS of your beliefs👍👍

"Never Walk Alone" is the finale song from Rogers and Hammerstein's "Carousel" Then the (English) Liverpool Soccer club adopted it! (Which is why John loves it!)

Thanks lady and gent (and I use that last term loosely 😂 - just joking Rollen). Yes, an annual event. Because we organise Christmas properly in Australia and have it in the summer (🤣), we can have events like this which are outdoor concerts (Carols by Candlelight in Melbourne, Carols in the Domain in Sydney, ...). They feature a cast of performers who come on and sing 1 or two carols. A great event for the whole family held on Christmas eve.

Been listening to John since the mid 60s, lived in the same suburb too Noble Park Melbourne.

Yeah it’s a great venue and outdoors so like a sea of twinkly stars, it’s a fundraiser for charity . I’m actually going to that venue tonight for concert and the weather is perfect :-)

Might add that the Sydney Myer music bowl is in Melbourne, not in Sydney. Named after Sydney Myer who built it. Myers was the biggest department emporium in Melbourne and maybe Australia..... once. Still going but no one knows how. lol
