I forget sometimes that not everybody does carols by candlelight, us in the Southern Hemisphere have the perfect weather for an outdoor concert of Christmas carols

Yes I don’t think they could do this in the northern hemisphere, too cold outside especially after dark!

To think this is sung totally live, no autotune, in a bugger of a venue - The Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne - as in outside - with all the air/wind and sound difficulties that that encompasses - and yet....... John & his "friends" absolutely nail it, both in pitch and respectful performance. It's not a rock concert, it's Christmas Carols by Candlelight and the tone of that was of the highest calibre. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Absolutely agree … except … you’re not watching a live video taken by someone in the audience. You’re watching a live, television quality broadcast video. Having worked in live tv for over 30 years and having worked on many live concerts including carols by candlelight, live Olympics, sporting events and music concerts from venues all around the world and everything in between .. I can promise you that there is massive team of highly skilled TV technicians that worked for many weeks beforehand, then rehearsals etc to make it as good as it could possibly be for those who couldn’t witness it live and first hand. We are always blessed to have talent such as John’s to work with … he is an absolute legend. And having worked with him many times over the years I can tell you from experience that he is the nicest man in the industry.

I was a little kid watching this on TV, but was in the backing choir for the Jimmy Barnes/David Campbell one (which was incredible...but I envy you so much for being there for John's!!). The performers always go on and on about it, but it really is magical seeing all the candles from the stage and hearing all the crowd singing back.

Sadly today John Farnham at 73 has been diagnosed with some form of cancer which has now put him for some surgery. Today is the 23/8/2022 so let's pray for Farnsey and send him good vibes. I love John not just from his music , but because of who he is as a person , and his dorky sense of humour at times . If you read this from your hospital bed or wherever you're getting the surgery done, I send you LOVE ,LOVE,LOVE. You are such a beautiful person. Stay strong , remember the Doris Day song what will be , will be . Go with it and let the medical professionals t take the reins and make you strong and healthy again. LOVE LOVE 💖 LOVE

Carols by Candelight was invented in Australia, actually Melbourne in the 1930s. We in Australia have a Summer Christmas so its perfect sitting on a blanket with a candle watching and singing carols outside. It is so popular that every state and every local council host a community carols by Candelight throughout the whole of Australia and also New Zealand. This one that John is singing at is the original from Melbourne and is televised Nationally on Christmas Eve. A big Tradition here in Australia.

I fondly remember the Lismore carols. They were held on a grassy slope on the Southern Cross University grounds, since the uni is located in the crook of a bend in a line of hills that curve around the north-eastern side of East Lismore suburb. I used to live just around the corner from the uni. Everyone who came sat all up the slope, with the stage set up at the bottom, so natural tiered seating.

The power of his voice is true. Notice he doesn’t sing (as most do today) with the mic right up in front of his mouth. John always holds it away from his face. You can see him and definitely, hear him. Sending best wishes to John in his recovery. You’ve given us so much in song and many laughs. Get well soon John. 💗xo

😂😂 I knew someone would get this one in before my request 😂 lol I consider this vocal performance one of Johns top 3 performances. I remember as a kid, was watching tv with my parents and channel chopping. Then we turned over right at the moment when John began that high note. I stood at attention & the vision of John standing at the middle of the stage at full stretch height & singing out to the crowd holding that high note. It became one of the most iconic visions I’d ever have of John Farnham!!! I was only 6 or 7 at the time, but even to a kid, that’s the impact he makes on anyone who sees and hears him for the first time… It wasn’t my first time hearing him, but when you watch someone in a moment in time that feels like it freezes, it’s an unforgettable moment! There’ll never be anyone ever like him again!!!

Carols by Candlelight is an event that happens all around australia pre-christmas. We gather at a local park or stadium, setup a stage and local and/or famous singers do christmas music and carols as the sun sets and folks light their candles/glowsticks etc, and the kids often sing and dance down in front of the stage. There'll be a local BBQ and some stalls setup, it's a community family-friendly event.

As others have said, it is summer during Christmas time in Australia. It is bloody hot and this particular event is held in a permanent open trumpet canopy shaped stage. In front of it is a sloped grass area that leads down to the stage. It is actually amazing the sound that comes out of that place. I have been there a few times. Mostly it was perfect weather, but one year was drenched in rain. Melbourne weather is up and down and is renowned for having four seasons in a day.

Carols by Candlelight is an Aussie institution - outdoor carol concerts, with a sea of candles to light it. I’m watching this year’s Carols right now 🥰 Queen of the Carols Sylvie Palladio and Aus Idol (and my old classmate at the Vic College of the Arts) alum Anthony Calleja steal the show every year. Delta usually sings too, and David and Mahalia were in tho Ishtar concert - David was co-hosting as well!

Mate... I remember watching this on Xmas eve cause that's when Carol by candlelight in Melbourne are on tele to have our Aussie performers sing a Xmas Carol or 2 and it's all for the kids mainly but also for everyone to reflect on the most important things in life. This was amazing and so moving watching it live and yes it gave me goosebumps too. A great reaction request this one 🔨🥁🦘🙏

There's an album called "Christmas Songs" released in 1970 by Johnny Farnham and "Friends for Christmas" with Olivia Newton John, I think 2016. There's also a song called "I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus" in the late 60's.

"You'll Never Walk Alone" comes from the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical "Carousel" with Shirley Jones singing it in the 1956 film. In 1963 the Liverpool Football Club (England) adopted the song as their theme song with Gerry & the Peacemakers doing a cover for them! "Carols by Candlelight" has been an annual Christmas Eve Concert in Melbourne since 1938 when the idea was first formed. (see story in 1st reply) It has since spread world wide. The money raised goes to our Associations for the Blind. The songs are sung "Basic" so that the audience can sing along.

"Carols by Candlelight, held in Melbourne, Victoria, was introduced in 1938 by radio announcer Norman Banks, of Melbourne radio station 3KZ. Whilst walking home from his night-time radio shift on Christmas Eve in 1937, he passed a window and saw an elderly woman sitting up in bed inside listening to "Away in a Manger" being played on the radio and singing along with her face being lit by candlelight. Wondering how many others spent Christmas alone, he had the idea to gather a large group of people to all sing Christmas carols together by candlelight. The first ever event was held in Alexandra Gardens the following Christmas in 1938, and was attended by around 10,000 people." - Wikipedia

You’ll Never Walk Alone was done by Gerry & the Pacemakers but it was originally a Sopranos song from a Rogers & Hammerstein’s musical called Carousel. I’ve sung it for amateur shows before…. One of my absolute favourites to sing!!

“You’ll Never Walk Alone” is originally from a show called Carousel that was made into a film in 1956. It starred Gordon McRae and Shirley Jones and was sung by them both at different times in the film. It has become a standard and a real test for singers everywhere. It’s one of those songs like “Climb every Mountain” from The Sound of Music that just builds and builds. You need a lot of lung power and diaphragm control to sing them both properly. John has it in spades.

Another delightful reaction video, albeit it not surprisingly so because of the artist performing. 🙂 Thank-you so much for the pleasure you have provided to me over the last few months of watching your reaction videos. Wishing you and all your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. 🎄

Rogers and Hammerstein wrote the song “ You’ll Walk Alone” it was originally from the stage show musical and then the movie Carousel. The song in the musical.was sung by one of the female characters so it was written originally with a female voice in mind. Then Gerry and the Pacemakers had a huge hit with it in the1960’s. Which brought it into the mainstream music charts. It has now become a classic 😊
