So what people fail to understand is that even within the so-called 4c hair category, there is such a wide range of textures. I have 4 sisters, we're all 4c, but each of us is a different type of 4c. One of us has 4c hair that feels like a cotton cloud, and another has hair whose individual strands feel as thick as wire. In the days of the creamy crack no relaxer known to man could get her hair fully straight. She'd have that thing on for hours, her scalp would burn, and it still wouldn't lay! The remaining 3 of us fall in the middle of that spectrum. 2 of us have 4b in the very front and the rest is thick voluminous 4c. The very youngest of us 5 has 4c throughout, but with very densely packed strands. After being loose natural for so many years, 3 of us now have microlocks lol. I say all this to say - 4c hair is a very wide spectrum. The categorization "4c" only describes one characteristic of a person's hair. There are other qualities/characteristics that could then make your hair much easier to detangle or manage, or much more difficult to handle.

@@sedsa097 I completely agree. I made a comment about this very thing somewhere else in this comment section. It's the products and the constant stretching. I didn't even use heat - just African threading, but it was always stretched in some form of the other. I never let it fro; I couldn't afford to 'cos I was in boarding school and 100% responsible for my hair care. Nobody wanted to touch me because of the density of my hair (it was a whole day's job lol). But you're absolutely right. Hair does have memory.

Her hair is 4C and if you watched her as a younger child on TV you could tell. The longer your hair grows, the more it stretches. And don’t forget there’s different porosities, densities, etc. there’s not strictly just one type of “4C” hair. There can be thicker 4C’s and thinner 4C’s and the thinner your hair is, the more your curls will show. Also keep in mind the length and the porosity. 💓 I actually think she’s 4C, her hair doesn’t look much different than Chizi’s but it’s just longer.

People saying her hair is 3c, I dont see it. I belive there are very different 4c hair (her front of the hair looks 4a/b). It just seems her hair doesn't shrink much, so it has length, thus giving this more blown out look. I've come to the conclusion that the hair typing is weird because even within certain labels, everyone's hair is unique.

When I was much younger and in my teens I wasn't allowed to get a perm. My way of dealing with the pain of extremely dense thick strands 4c hair was to grease my hair really good and thread up my hair in 4 large sections the minute I walked in the door. I did this EVERY, SINGLE, DAY. After a while, especially when I got to bra strap length, my hair started looking kinky straight like a blow out even at the end of a long day. I remember a classmate of mine legit came at me for saying my hair was still 100% natural. She wouldn't believe it and I was so pissed than I refused to explain why my hair had become like that 😅 Unless I actually poured water in it you couldn't see the evidence of a curl. Hair has something called memory. Keep it permanently stretched for weeks on end and it will "remember" to stay that way. At least until wash day.

I like to think that hair types are like skin tones. For example, skin tones highly vary and don't just come in 'light, medium, and dark.' Same with hair textures. Type 4 hair has a lot of variation and is does not strictly fit into just three categories we call a, b, and c. Many people have multiple curl patterns and textures throughout their hair. I think putting type 4 hair into strict boxes can make it even more confusing for naturals just trying to figure out how to best care for their hair when their hair does not exactly fit in any one of the categories. Skai Jackson has beautiful, long TYPE 4 hair. Her hair may not be exactly 4c specifically in the front where we can see it, but keep in mind that 4c hair does not have one specific look. Other factors come into play besides curl pattern such as density, porosity, fine/thick strands, and texture.

Skai is so cute 😍 she looks like a doll with her huge eyes! But I noticed she used an oil and her hair and you said you do as well. A bunch of black hair professionals like @camillejanae and @jenniferrosenyc have been educating people on natural hair on Twitter and they said that we shouldn’t use oils and butters on our hair at all and that our hair doesn’t need even need a leave in if we use a quality shampoo/conditioner. They said all we need is a clarifying shampoo 1x a month, shampoo and condition weekly, and a styler. I thought they were tripping at first, but I’ve been trying it out for a month and my hair feels AMAZING! I’d love to see you do a video trying out a simple routine to see if it works for you 💕

Yes, I have added some conditioner on top of shampoo in the past because the shampoo I was using caused mad shrinkage and tangling. Adding the conditioner helped to keep my curl pattern elongated and easier to detangle/ clean. But now I've found products my hair loves and no longer have those issues!!!!

I wash my hair the same, it really helps, she is probably like me.... it is better to untangle my hair with the shampoo in my hair. It can be very hard to get a good scalp cleaning if I don't, and with my sensitive skin, and the fact I use grease on my scalp, my scalp would be itching like I wear a weave 😩 🤣 I do a preliminary wash, then the 2nd time I use shampoo and conditioner, then just conditioner. Sorry long.

5:54 I've mixed conditioner with my shampoo if the shampoo feels too harsh...it started from mixing conditioner with dish soap to strip out temporary colour, bc pure dishsoap makes my hair feel like it might snap in the shower. mixing conditioner lets me really lather the soap/shampoo into the mids/ends without make a tangled nightmare. The dishsoap really lathers so i usually have to cowash it a few times to get the bubbles out completely :/

Skye definitely has 4C hair (or at least a mix of 4B/4C) The hair typing system doesn’t do a good job of including factors other than the curl pattern/curl type that can have a huge influence on the way hair behaves. It looks like Skye has very fine 4C hair, especially in the front. Fine 4C hair has a different look than coarse 4C hair - it’s more soft and fluffy than dense and spongy. And when it’s wet, it tends to elongate more because fine hair is usually higher porosity (so the hair absorbs water quickly rather than the water beading up on the hair). Not to mention her hair is quite long - the weight of her hair probably elongates the curls and makes them look a little more defined (especially with a lot of gel like she had at the beginning.)

But now that I take care of it and it’s soft and moisturized all the time now everyone wants to switch up. But I went to a hair stylist and they told me I had a mixture of both.

I think understanding your hair by porosity is more important than hair type. Of course certain things might not work specially for a ‘type’ but that's because we should understand what our hair necessarily needs.

You mentioned "why would she put conditioner in her hair with the shampoo if she's gonna use it after" i think it's because she hasn't really brushed through her hair in a bit and it was probably really dry another reason could be she might be detangling it with a brush while she shampoos and conditions it to make it easier for her prior to her not brushing it out as well my hair is extremely thick and i cannot brush while shampoo is in my hair because that will tear it
