This planet, Rigel VII, is the planet referenced in The Menagerie/Cage from the Original Series, where the Talosians make Pike relive the battle there and where he loses those three 'red shirts' (even though one of them is a yellow shirt)
3:15 What episode? Um, the first one. Ever. >:D Original pilot with Captain Pike, The Cage. The show picks up shortly after that disaster of a mission and Pike is brooding about how he feels badly about losing people and is thinking of quitting the service.

Interesting how much this season has been leaning into M'Benga's background as a Rambo-esque badass so far. I just realized that Babs Olusanmokun was in Dune. "I am Erica Ortegas. I throw the asteroid!" 🤣🤣🤣 I love the computer voice. It's a direct homage to Majel's historical voice, whereas the other modern shows have replaced her entirely. Except for that one scene in Picard. It was just taken straight out of Chain of Command Part 2 when Jellico transferred command back to Picard.

I was told this is because Babs has some serious tactical skills in rl and they decided to make use of it. I think it came up in one of the Ready Room episodes. Edit: Olusanmokun is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, as well as fluent in French, English, Portuguese and Yoruba. Some excellent skills to have in a Star trek show to me.
