Raymarine Autopilot Installation (EV-100 Autohelm)

A short 3 minute installation video of the Raymarine EV100 autopilot (autohelm) wheelpilot.
The installation took around 3 to 4 hours to complete and was quite a straightforward process. Yo will notice in the video that we chose to install a breaker switch allowing us to be able to isolate the power to the autopilot.
We are not associated with Raymarine in anyway and they did not sponsor this video, we paid full price for the autopilot.

Hopefully this video will help somebody install their own Raymarine autopilot.

We installed the autopilot before sailing around the UK and it's been a must for us and the crew, it would've become very tidious hand steering all that way. We've been very pleased with it 👌🏼 So glad you noticed the logo, it took Gav hours to dissect the logo so it could become animated.

I just finished installing today and it won’t fire up. I went from one breaker in the panel then wirenutted the hots together putting a 5a fuse to the 5 way connector and sending the other one to the acu. I then wirenutted the commons together. I have power coming from the panel to the unit but as soon as I tie everything in I get a reading of 3 volts at the acu. Did I do something wrong?

Hey great video! Just finishing installing mine. I am just curious as to what gage of wire you used from the breaker to the IP box and from the IP box to the ACU unit? And what type of connectors did you use inside the IP box? Simply just marrettes? Thanks again!

Thank you, it were a while ago but think we used 0.75mm² tinned cable and the connector came inside the ip box, they were the chocblock style. Wago’s will work perfectly too.

Slot cannot be vertically below as in the installation instructions so did you drill a new one? Also did the flat brackets holes match up with the round holes or do you have to re drill? We are trying to fit ours and having endless fun ....

We didn't have to drill anything on the kit at all, we had to drill the hole for the motor to go inside the pedastal, we also had to drill the 4 holes for the bracket to be mounted (see 2:34 ) You can email us if you want to send pics of what you are stuck on. svcompromise@gmail.com

I also have an box pedestal and have to drill a hole for the motor. But shouldn't the motor be capable to hold the autopilot? Did you need the stay bracket? To me it looks like the stay bracket can't be used if the motor is fixed into the box pedestal, or should I get their extra fittings for the box pedestal, what's your experience?

Marius Håland Hi We've had no issues at all with our setup, you will need the stay bracket, they sell a flat bracket instead of the rounded bracket which is designed for a traditional round pedestal.

Im trying to install one of these currently. If i go by the manuals reccs it looks like the wheel drive motor will hit my throttle controls. I see you shifted yours to the bottom left. Did this change any of the drive characteristics?

  • @OverlandSea

the_sailing_cyclops None whatsoever, it's works perfectly fine, except when in really heavy seas, but that's nothing to do with the position, it's the fact the wheelpilot doesn't handle extreme weather helm. Feel free to fire anymore questions over and good luck with the install Gav

I know this comment is well late but I was wondering about the sensor location I believe for best accuracy they should be mounted at the waterline on the centreline, it may have been an optical illusion but yours appeared to be to one side. How is it performing? cheers moose

Hi Moose, your absolutely right they do recommend getting as close as poss to the centreline and waterline where possible, this was as close as we could get because our steering mechanism. We’ve done around 2k Nm with it now and it’s worked perfectly, the only issue we had was my tools being too close to the sensor core so I put the tools in the opposite locker and that sorted it. Cheers Gav

It’s managed some heavy swell but I could imagine any further off centre you could possibly have issues with the 9 axis sensor picking up the motion of the boat. How did you find the video Moose, anything I could improve on for future videos? Cheers
