Marine autopilot installation - Raymarine EV-100 autohelm - Ep. 134

We show how we installed our Raymarine Autopilot (an EV-100 autohelm) and used it as an opportunity to upgrade the boat's network system to Seatalk NG / NMEA-2000 from the old Seatalk-1 system.

    You guys are fantastic! My boyfriend and I loved the installation. We also need the box for the monitor and your tip is very welcome. Only concern we would like to share is the fact that the compass can't be around any electronics, and that may include the ACU. Maybe that's what had you guys going in circles? Anyway, we loved the video and your creative solutions. Best, Nykki and Gustavo

    We found the cause of the problem. The flux compass is against a bulkhead which has the starboard locker on the other side and we found a deck brush with a mild steel handle in that locker. Once we removed the steel brush everything was good again. I've no experience of wheelpilots, all 15 (approximately, never counted properly) of my boats have been tiller, so good to see this video, I'd be happier with an internal linear drive but sure they are very expensive, I'd hope that a boat I'd bought already had one! Gaynor here - Not too sure how the present situation is going to affect the price of boats. I think they will go down, but I have already received an email from a seller saying that they have several people wanting to buy boats and the price of boats is going up as they have more buyers than sellers so we will just have to wait and see. As you have only had tillers you should be a dab hand at autopilots for them

    We are getting a deviation, but it is occasional, so you might be fine for say 5 weeks, then all of a sudden it goes haywire. What we think the problem is, is that we have to read the instructions again as it only happens when we press certain buttons, but we can never remember which buttons we have pressed. I tided up the cables more after the last shot of my wiring plus we looked at all that, the very first time it went haywire which was just coming into Portrush. It was our first thought though.

    @@zenvad8080 - there are a couple of follow-up videos as well as we discover more and more about the autopilot. Also the flux compass is very sensitive to CHANGES in the magnetic field. We had a deck brush that moved around in the locker when at sea. As we later discovered it had a mild-steel fitting in the shaft and was strongly magnetised and as it rolled from side to side the flux compass would go insane. It was about ½ metre away from the compass. Now anything mild steel or magnetic is banned from the rear half of the cockpit.

    Abit late to the party but if a boat is left in one direction for any length of time (on a berth) it can become magnetised by earths magnetic field (especially steel boats ). With a yacht the mast and boom could be affected this however wears off once underway and changing heading . Resulting in slight changes of deviation , so boat may need a quick recalibrating if laid up for a while. May also settle things down if you move the flux gate compass away from the aft area as lots of metal parts there particularly the rudder post and associated equipment. I think on my boat it is in a locker midships. maybe with your new NMEA 2000 there a suitable place further away. Just my ten peneth worth enjoy the videos fair winds and safe landings all the best ....

    Hi Ian, thanks for the comments. I had not considered the Earth's magnetic field but I suspect that for a teel boat it could be a problem. Luckily for us, our boat is almost completely fibreglass and aluminium and what steel we have is stainless which magnetises poorly. We did have a few problems later on that turned out to be caused by a piece of mild steel in a lazarette!!!

    Thanks for this step by step video. I just installed the same autopilot and now have a question: how did you connect SeaTalk NG backbone to your NMEA 2K backbone. I see there is backbone adapters available. Did you connect at terminal ends? Did you disconnect power feed to one of the two backbones? Thanks and fair winds!

  • @SailingYachtSaltyLass

    @SailingYachtSaltyLass

    2 жыл бұрын

    This boat had no networks of any kind when we purchased it, but we did have some devices that had NMEA2K DeviceNet connectors rather than Seatalk ones. What we did was we bought Seatalk to DeviceNet cables (they have different connectors at each end) and then we plugged the other devices directly into the Seatalk network. If your boat has a NMEA2K network already, I would try buy a joining cable to bridge the two networks and place it in the NMEA network as close as possible to the power supply and leave the Seatalk network "unpowered". It will either work or it will not, but it is a safer trial than attempting to power them both. If your NMEA network only has two or three devices and the Seatalk network is larger, then power the Seatalk one and unpower the NMEA network and bridge it in. If you have 20 devices in each then I have no idea what to do 😄

    Thanks for the video. Can you tell me what residual forces you have on the helm when the autopilot clutch is disengaged? I have fitted one, but the wheel forces are much higher than I expected with it disengaged. (I also have yet to see the wheel pilot appear on the P70 within the backbone, so not sure what the deal is there as yet)

  • @SailingYachtSaltyLass

    @SailingYachtSaltyLass

    Жыл бұрын

    When we disengage the autopilot and release the clutch there is no residual resisitance from the autpilot. It feels like a normal wheel and rotates freely. So, in your position I would try removing the drive and clutch (I am assuming you have a wheelpilot like us and not a hydraulic ram on the quadrant) and seeing if the wheel turns freely. If the wheel still feels heavy with the autopilot removed then either the steering need lubricated or the rudder bearing needs replacing. I say this because in Bavarias like ours the factory fitted rudder bearing is known to swell and make the steering feel very heavy. Many owners replace the factory bearing with a needle bearing instead. If the steering feels OK after removing the wheeldrive then try adjusting the friction setting. This is a small nut just between the drive motor and the pedestal pin and is adjusted with an Allen Key to unlock it and then twist it round and relock with the Allen key. You might be able to reach this with the wheel pilot in place if your binnacle shape allows.

    We fitted a Raymarine Axiom chart plotter, we already had a Raymarine wheel pilot ST4000 on a Seatalk network. The ST4000 seatalk network is connected to the Axiom Seatalkng network via a bridge. The reason i mention all this is that a course set on the chartplotter will be followed by the ST4000 wheelpilot. I would be really surprised if your wheel pilot did not have this functionality, bear in mind our ST4000 is prob 20 years old. I think the wheel pilot used the cross track error messages to steer the course, maybe someone who knows could comment on this.
