Thank you Brian Peek for keeping this online.
Welcome to the series where I review every single Sega Saturn game released in North America by order of release date. I made a spreadsheet with all the games satakore.com has as American releases, listing them off by order of release date, including sources. All the games are narrowed down to the month they came out in the U.S.

    @@CommonSense-hy2sn dang.. so Yani Yan 2 tricked me? I wouldn't doubt the 32X could have the same music as Jag since it does have it's own sound sample chip, but on the other hand I might expect it to be different since most 32X games use the Genesis FM as well. Brutal Unleashed is an example of a 32X game that uses the 32X chip for music and sound effects without FM. So it's possible.. but yea if this Rayman is really just the Jaguar version then shame on Yani Yan 2..

    You are 100% the first to identify and showcase this footage. It’s an incredible find. I’m shocked this was out there and so darn happy you found it. That's unfortunally what it required though, sorting through hours of old tapes and footage and are seldom documented. We’ve known Rayman (32x) was deep into development since '95. Not sure why anyone would think it wasn’t. In fact, I never heard anyone mention that being the case. So what happened? In short, we don't know, but I'll give my opinion on it. Orignially, the game was slated for release on the Jag in Feb of '95. We see this notated in a few sources. The date is missed and a new one is set for June of '95. We learn at that time that multiple versions are now underway, but the 32X was started or at least is on schedule to wrap production and ship alongside the Jag in Jun of '95. That’s about when Sega dropped support for the 32X. Atari Power Entertainment reports at E3 that the game is seeing more delays and will be pushed back to September because the development team feels it needs further polish. So by then, developers knew Sega was no longer supporting anything, but the Saturn. Most games for other Sega hardware were canceled in mass in an effort to cut these developers' losses. For the most part, the games that released after this point were all published by Sega or a company that held a sweetheart deal with Sega. Even 3rd party games such as Blackthorne, T-mek, and Primal Rage were published by Sega. So in sort, Sega took the financial risk on some games that were close to complete or complete to generate some goodwill with consumers and dumped the rest. BTW, awesome job. You've been knocking it out of the park.

    What hooked me up is that background, it's much more advanced than what we got, it's multi-layer, more detailed, with what it seems to be a sort of fog, and it fits better with the swampy mood. I wonder if other backgrounds like this were scrapped to use a more simplified 2D background.

    To add to the discussion, I'm a Charlie Chan (1930s - 1940s movie series) fan. "Charlie Chan in Paris" (1935) was lost until 1970 or so, and there are more movies that were lost for longer than that. I kinda hope the last 4 missing Charlie Chan movies (movies 1, 3, 4, and 5) get found soon (if ever,) though; they haven't been seen since at least 1937. Then again, 1930s film degrades bad, and it doesn't take too long...

    I'm beginning to wonder how many people would buy previously unreleased games if they had a release decades later. Perhaps the numbers would be small, like 500 or 5,000 copies at a time, but it could be a different business venture now since retro gaming is now an appreciated thing (unlike from 2004 - 2006.)

    @@101Volts Companies like GameStop should get involved in publishing and selling new retro games (in addition to used titles). Work with both indie and large companies to release new original titles, finish and release unreleased titles, new ports (or re-ports), as well as "reprints" of rare games. The reprints won't be worth as much as originals, but it would allow retro gamers and collectors to get their hands on an affordable high quality officially licensed reproduction instead of a pirated repro. Oh, they could also translate and publish games never previously released outside of select regions (mainly Japan). Work with existing translation groups where fair agreements can be struck. Ah well... a man can dream.

    Amazing find! 32X was a 2D powerhouse! It would have been an excellent port. So interested in what the sounds would have been like. Judging by many 32X titles the music could have been part Genesis FM and part 32X sampling combined, and could have been unique from the Jaguar. As where sound FX could have likely been sampling equivalent to the Jag. It's crazy how developers were to scrap things like this into the trash.. Fast foward years later and it becomes very sought after.

    @CommonSense-hy2sn3 жыл бұрын

    I was always skeptical of the 32X being able to run Rayman well as it has no fast 2D hardware of anykind. It neither has hardware sprites nor hardware scrolling, doing either of those tasks has to be performed by the CPU which is very demanding as it has to draw the entire screen whilst running game logic. This is why Pitfall on the 32X, whilst more colorful, runs at sub 30 FPS compared to the base Megadrive version's steady 60 FPS. Some games, like Knuckles Chaotix, split the 2D tasks between the Megadrive and 32X hardware. The Megadrive can scroll two playfields which Chaotix uses for the stage and the background, Chaotix even uses the MD's sprites to move rings around, the 32X is only used to draw the characters and enemies. This footage is fascinating, as it has unique backgrounds not seen anywhere else. The forground/stage is similair to the Jaguar version (Jaguar has an earlier, more greenish version of the forest tileset), but there are two overlapping background layers compared to the other versions 1. This makes it seem like Ubisoft went the Kolibri route and used the the 32X to do the stage and characters and tasked the Megadrive hardware to scroll the backgrounds, as the Megadrive's 512 color palette won't cut it for the PSX/Jaguar's art, they tried to get around this by creating unique backgrounds purely for the 32X version. Very likely that we're looking at a genuine 32X build here, real impressive for the hardware.
