is the #2 on the housing always an indicator of the LSD? or is there no correlation between the two?

unfortunately there are no external signs of lsd on the case

Does the torsen have a white sticker? On my white sticker it says 51

Hi, thanks for the video. I am going to buy a 2002 rav4, and would like to know if it has torsen or open differential. Do you think that this info could be found in the car’s documentation? Otherwise, what kind of test could one do to prove it is one or another type? Maybe keeping it suspended and trying to brake only one rear wheel, and seeing if torque is sent on both wheels? Thanks in advance.

I think that the most simple thing is to remove the differential cover and see, everything else is done and it’s difficult to understand something.

@@RusShbreak1 thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I think it’s pretty hard to have the diff cover removed before buying the car, I thought there was a way to tell by trying the car and the wheel slip. Anyways thanks for your video and answer!

My 99 Rav has a sticker (not stamped in numbers on the rear housing) with the numbers 5 and 1 on it, so I take it that this is a standard rear not a torsen? correct?

@@jlc7300 For my experiance, you can detect you torsen or std diff only if you dissassemble rear differential cover.

So can you just take this diff from a 2000-05 and put in a 1st gen that originally had no Torsen no problem?

yes, The rear differential is the same for the 1st and 2nd generation. In both generations there were modifications with torsen!

1995 rav 4 What differential does it have? Limited slip "lsd" or torsen differential?

I have no answer to this question, but I don't think these numbers have anything to do with the internals of the differential.

@@RusShbreak1 I know that RAV Mk2 00-05, AWD models, got their AWD from RX300, 98-03. I tried track it through Lexus forums and toyodiy.com, no luck.

how do i no which rav4 has torsen and which ahs open diff?wiki says torsen was optional so.....im buying one for offroad purposes so it is really important to me to no taht i get the torsen diff in the rear!

Only one thing you can do - open differential body and see is it torsen lsd or standart free diff.

Torsen was put on first and second gen rav4 1995-2005.

Is the Diff Housing from the RAV 4 xa1 and xa2 the same?

torsen left on the table, but letter 2 on diff case - it is not 100% attribute of torsen. You need to open case of diff before purchase!

The point is that outwardly and turning the flanges, you will not understand in any way whether it is a torsen or not. There are no special signs on the body or special behavior. You have to take the cover off and have a look.

I think only in auto disassembly used parts. But, not only rav4 - celika st201and some other old toyota has torsen in rear differential.
