    * Tosti with mayo, regular we make a tosti and put the mayonaise (or curry or whatever sauce you want with it) on the plate/cup to dip the tosti in it. Not the mayo on top of the cheese and grill it. Putting the mayo under the grill will make it very spongy, I think? * And when you liked that boterkoek, get some of a bakery (or make it yourself), those are even better because a lot of the boterkoek in the supermarket is made with (palm) oil instead of only butter. With just butter and no oil it is much richer and less fatty. And it is really easy to make yourself (like can be done within an hour). * And the Tuc, well you can use them as a cracker with some salad but most Dutch put them just at the table as some snacks and eat them just like chips with some drinks in the evening or at special occasions like a birthday party. * Advocaat is regularly served in smaller glasses, more the size of a port glass and eaten with a tea spoon. Most people don't fill a glass like you did and eat it with a table spoon, LOL.

  • @fiskurtjorn7530
    @fiskurtjorn75303 ай бұрын

    1:43 You are not wrong. Beschuit is baked multiple times in little bins called "beschuitdoppen" It is the size of two " beschuitjes". The dough is put under said beschuitdop and baked for the first time. Then it is cut in two and baked a second time. 9:20 Autch. Just put the mayo on when the cheese is grilled. Mayo isn't meant to be heated. 15:53 Please use a tea-spoon next time, don't gulp it. Also use a smaller glass size "eierdopje" and enjoy it in small scoops over half an hour or so in the company of friends. Also tastes good when you put a drop or two on ice cream.

    Beschuit comes from the french words bis and cuit and means 'baked twice'. And it actually is baked twice, once as a bun and then when it's cut open into the beschuit. It's baked on a much lower temperture than bread. It's a very old way of perserving bread. Was very popular in medival times.

    I'm not much of a drinker either, but I definately love a "advocaatje". It is a thing more popular among the elderly and than the women mostly. I remember at parties my grandmother and her sisters, all the ladies enjoying a advocaatje. It was also my grandmother who introduced me to it. She made her own so I grew up with my grandmother treating me to here homemade advocaat with slagroom (she left out the boerenjongens for me, that was a bit too much on the alcohol). When my kids were little they wanted to join me and I would give them a glass of vanillevla with the whipped cream. They loved that.

    the advocaat reminds me of a story, my grandma used to make it herself when she was younger (this was before i was born). she would be cooking this, and because she would be standing with her face over the kettle she would get tipsy. personally i really like it, and i don't know why younger people don't eat it more (i'm 30). he said it was made with egg, but forgot to tell that it's egg and brandy.

    Super nice initiative. What I remember about 'beschuit' from my childhood is that it was something you would eat when your belly was upset and also the ideal companion for soup if you wanted a quick meal. Next one, if you like chocolate you should try to find some jacques matinettes puur. Thin dark chocolate tablets that are great with PB or jam.

I tastes a bit like pure pink chocolate callets from Callebaut.

    Haha, i'm not surprised you thought the Advocaat was too strong, your normally eat that with an Advocaat spoon which is very small (like half a teaspoon). Tip for the mayo, don't put it on the grilled cheese. When you heat mayo it will sift (basically, the emulsion falls apart again and you just get oil and fat separately, doesn't taste good). Just use it as a dip instead. Great video again though! :)

    Advocaat is traditionally made with "brandewijn", a type of distilled alcohol. This is where the English word "brandy" derives from. Brandewijn literally means "burnt wine".

    About beschuit, or rusk, as you called it: the Dwarfs in Tolkien's 'The Hobbit' eat something called 'cram'. Twice baked cakes that taste like nothing and are mainly a chewing exercise. Of course, the Elves had something better, lembas, but in the films, that also looked like some kind of 'beschuit'. As you demonstrated, it is mainly eaten when celebating births, but a lot of people eat it for breakfast, with cheese, jam, hagelslag or something like that. Did you notice the notch in the beschuit? That was introduced after an amateur-inventor had suggsted it, because he had always trouble getting the beschuit out of the package without breaking it.

    In Germany and the northern Netherlands you also hear zweiback or zweiback and in Italy you hear biscotti. All referring to twice baked. In the Netherlands you can buy the crumpet. A spongy round cake which is than is cut in half and baked again, the zweiback. Btw A roll of rusk has 13 pieces, a dozen and 1 extra due to possible breakage.

    13 pieces is referred to as bakkersdozijn (bakers dozen) for as far as I know this is where it originated but might be wrong the nudge was introduced by Bolletje Bakery somewhere end 90's begin 00's I believe, it made it way easier to get the discs out of the package without breaking it

    @@Wrecker3D A baker's dozen is because a 3:2 rectangle will fit 13 circles. Beschuit kan be kept edible for very long. I use it instead of panko or bread crum coating. Just rub it in a sieve.

    If you think the advocaat is too strong mix it 50/50 with vanille vla. Or on the other side of the spectrum if you think the advocaat isn't strong enough add "boerenjongens", raisins soaked in brandy. Advocaat is basically eggs and brandy.

    Hey there, loved the mayonaise and the beer part. But i think Vet Gezellig actually meant to add the mayo on your tosti afterwards instead of grilling it along the rest. Is that a US thing, heated up mayonaise lol? As for the beer part, you had a beer from De Molen in Bodegraven, one of the best craft brewers in the country and even award winning worldwide. I worked for an outlet store now defunct) which had strong ties with that brewery and we used to carry a lot of varieties of brews from then (tip: go visit them this spring or summer for beers and diner, they have a tasting festival as well if that is still going these days, called Borefst.). Although barley wine still isn't a coming thing to drink in NL, i sure think they are representing Dutch products and craftsmanship, so good on you for having it! 🍻🍻 And beer sommeliers are a real thing now, but have a different name, can't come up with it now. Myself, i had about 25+ different beer types untill now myself and know a fair bit about it, but i would not call myself a beer sommelier. A connaiseur for sure though. Cheers!!

    Great video. For some reason it is fun to see how foreigners try Dutch food, but at the same time never really seem to get it. Licorice is a great example. In this video: you need to butter the beschuitjes first; you need to dip the tosti's after preparation in the mayonnaise (or in pindasaus = my rec); The whipped cream needs to be on top of the advocaat. You could also try a Dutch vegetables taste test. In March/April/May you can buy white asparagus. They're delicious. Other typical Dutch vegetables dishes include: bruine bonen (brown beans). Beats. Celeriac (esp in soups as erwtensoep, bruine bonensoep - don' t use celery stalks). Perhaps "blote billetjes in het gras" (odd name for string beans and white beans). There are a lot of "dutch" vegetables that nowadays have become rare. It might be interesting to have a look into that.

    Kanjers make really good "old school" stroopwafels, I have never had the variety you guys tasted. De Ruyter Vlokken also has a variety that's a mix of white & chocolate that I would absolutely recommend. If you can find Oliehoorn "Brander" mayonaise, you may find you like that even better than the Zaanse mayo. Never buy the small variety of mergpijpjes, the ones that kind of taper off, they will not have cake and jam in them. Out of the Hollandse pot hard candy my personal fave is the honeycomb candy. Hope you liked those too.
