Rather Splendid Crouch End - London Walking Tour
Crouch End is more than just a leafy liberal suburb on London without a tube station!
In this video with @Joolz Guides - London History Walks - Travel Films we walk from Highgate Station to Crouch End including the parkland walk, Bob Dylan, Eurythmics, Trumpton and the usual array of weird facts.
There's the sculpture of Charles Darwin (or is it?), Banners, the chewing gum painter, the Boogaloo, and my favourite bakery Dunn's. Lotus car's first showroom, Hornsey St Mary's church tower and much more.

I beeped my horn as you were doing the Darwin talk, sorry probably really annoying but I love your walks and got over excited 😂 I always wondered why you'd never done Crouchend. Ive moved home since then so great to watch my old neighbourhood. Great work 👏🏾
Stink pipes , hot doughnuts , zombies, Bob Dylan, a famous hoarder, chewing gum art .. and that’s only part of it and all on a single walk. The best London Guide channel by far.

Honestly, I've watched this video at least five times already. It's just that good! Can't get enough of it.
Yippee you're back. I'm a Londoner who hasn't lived there for a long time - it's wonderful to see my old haunts again. Thank you so much. Love everything you do. We really enjoyed your film Take me to Pitcairn - everyone should watch it - it's brilliant.

I lived just beyond the (new) library. It was built when I was a kid. It was a park before then.
I dated a girl from Crouch End for over a year, it was my introduction to London and watching this brought back many magical memories of lazy Saturday and Sunday afternoons pacing those paths. Very bitter sweet
I'm from Alabama but have been to London twice. I have a history degree and love british history but even i didn't know how much history was truly around me until watching your videos. Love your stuff, UP THE JOOLZ!
'Joolz Guide' is, without doubt, the best video entertainment and 'see for yourself, guides available. It must take a lot of planning to to organise, record and present. It goes without saying, how appreciated this is by the viewers. "Joolz, you are brilliant. Please, please keep this very informative, interesting and historic masterclass, coming.
What a treat, a Joolzy on a Sunday afternoon. Funnily enough I've just relocated back to London and went to Crouch End via Highgate recently. Excellent review, wish I'd known the detail before I went, would have made my walk all the more poignant. As an aside, was in Jackson Lane theatre to see Ricky Gervais's comedy warm up shows, great little place. I really like Highgate.
I used to drive the recycling truck through Jacksons Lane ! Crouch End has always been a special place.

Can confirm, it is a lovely place to live.
Love Crouch End. My dad lived on Inderwick Road, you could see Ally Pally in the distance from his back garden. His next door neighbour was Neneh Cherry’s sister!

His local was a pub called Dick’s Bar, long gone I think. Sure it’s an electrical shop now. We also used to go to Park Road pool and jump off the high board!
Thanks for the memories Joolz ..i lived in Crouch End when i was at music college ...40 years ago. It has still kept its charm ..
The small garage in Topsfield Parade used to be a bicycle repair shop called Robert’s Rebuilds back in the 1970’s. We used to bring our bikes in there when we were kids. Brilliant memories.
Thanks for the memory of Mr Trebus - bless him and may he rest in.peace. Crouch End looks like a cool place to visit and I feel that I.put on a stone who you bisited Dunn's Bakery.

Bloody cool. We left during the snowy winter of '62-63.
Sigh…I lived in Crouch End (Avenue Road) until I moved to Hong Kong in 1993. I remember Banner’s opening - was beyond cool then. ,made me pretty wistful - one thing you missed was the “Peep Show” intro with all the Televisions was filmed next to the old town hall you featured.

I also lived in Crouch End for years, and I too was waiting for the Peep Show reference where they look in to the TV/Electrical appliance shop...thanks for the tour though, seeing this has made me miss the place
This Crouch End area looks very original indeed, Joolz. All the older buildings look as good as the day they were built, with many small traditional businesses still intact. The place has also been swarming with musicians and actors too, in the past. What a terrific part of London this appears to be. Many thanks for this video.

Good to hear from you after about a month's silence! This Crouch End edition is terrific - your bouncy attitude makes it fun (as always). Keep well, Dave
Quality mate i grew up in crouch end in the 60s-70s-80s& part of the 90s , as a child it was idilic place to live I lived in a block of flats in crescent rd a naibour gave me his old tent & sleeping bag, so during the summer holidays me & my mate who lived on the corner of Coleridge rd , camp out by our-selfs back in 1970, we decided to go for a walk through crouch end bye the clock tower which proceeded to strike midnight 🕛 there was no one about not even a car it was dead quiet, as a eight year old it was the best thing going, being up so late, terrific days, loved your video brought back many happy memories 👍all the best John Duffy
Oh dear, you failed to mention that Peter Sellers and Spike Milligan in the 1950s both lived in the post-war block of flats next to the double stink pipes. Peter Sellers was brought up in a terrace house on Muswell Hill Road about 7 minutes walk away. He could have been in Highgate Station when Gerry Springer was born.
A lifetime away from the 1950s and 60s living on Crouch Hill and Hornsey Rise. Greetings from Ontario!
It`s a wonder Joolz that Netflix or Amazon don`t make you a offer because your video`s are first class, and as always this video was both informative and a pleasure to watch... love it! ❤❤
5:08 Love the Tag on tunnel wall - Lamb Shanks !
Very nostalgic I was born in 1946 whilst parents living in Avenue Rd moved to Birchington Rd in 1951 lived in our family home till 1967 when I married and left all those memories in Crouch End. Mum continued to live there till 1976 when she downsized to Hertfordshire what great memories thanks Joolz
As always, another groovy video of London, England. Nobody does a tour better than you. And funny, OMG.
Joolz! I love all your videos! This one about Crouch End was most meaningful as I had the opportunity to live in this area many years ago, as I was an exchange university student from the U.S.A. I have many fond memories of London and I can listen to your wonderful stories and humour all day. Thank you for your tours and keen insights into London history!
Love a Joolz Guides video on a Sunday, yours are the only video's I actually click on the Like button before watching, as I know I will enjoy it :)
That bottle of HP Sauce set on the shelf with the other condiments at Bob Dylan's table takes me back when growing up and having it on the table for eggs, etc. Thanks, Joolz.

What a rather splendid video! Actually, one of my favorites, and I've never heard of Crouch End - though now, of course, I must go. And particularly to Dunn's bakery. This video seemed particularly walk-y in a good way. So much interesting history covered! First rate jokes, too! Thanks, Joolz.

Brilliant! Thanks Joolz for another fabulous stroll through London. Love Crouch End and everything you showed us! Keep up the wonderful walks! Cheers!!
In the 70s, me and my school mates would buy second hand bike parts from 'Roberts Rebuilds', a garage up an alley way near the clock tower. The Kings Head, years ago, was always referred to as 'Henekys', I don't know why. Joolz.... You never mentioned TV Shows, Minder and The Professionals were also filmed in Crouch End. Kink Konk.

I loved this wonderful video. In March 1940, at the age of 3, my Dad and Mum and my sister went tolive with my paternal grandparents at 38, Middle Lane. I have been associated with the area ever since then and love it very much. I even remember my Grandma calling us in from the back garden one Sunday during the Battle of Britain, where my sister and I had been following the flight of aircraft in the south eastern sky above, by the sound of their gunfire. Did you know that, during the 1950s, the King of Skiffle, Lonnie Donegan, also lived in Middle Lane, a few doors away from my grandparents. Thank you for the video. It is on my bucket list to visit Crouch End again, as soon as I am able. It is like home to me.

So nice to have you back Joolz. Love learning about London and hoping to do some of your walks next year when we visit, from Australia. Cheers mate
Happiest days of my life growing up in Crouch End in the Seventies. Good to see you passed by corner of West in Park and Nelson Road where I lived 😊❤️💯
So cool to see Shane McGowan and Phil Lynott in the same clip
Your vids are like a time machine. Absolutely love them 🌹 I hope to return to England one day. Thank you, dear Joolz ✨🌻✨
In WW2 in 1944 my mum was bombed out of her flat in Ribblesdale Road next to Hornsea Station in by a V2 rocket right next to that hotel & Dad's mum lived in Church Lane. Also as a kid I remember the lovely fresh donuts from Dunn's Bakery and my sister and I dancing at Crouch End Town Hall circa 1957/8.' The Good 'Ol Days' eh!
Can you do an episode where you go to all the locations of the monopoly board. You can skip free parking as I would imagine it no longer exists in London.

wonderful. full of family walking about history and on mother's day.that side of the family. grew up with postcards, calendars, etc. beautiful.
These videos are just the tonic,a nice bun ,mug of coffee,my pug who snores far too loudly beside me. After watching each video i get that lovely warm feeling that an Ealing comedy gives it makes this country seem warm and cosy.
Nice little tour. You took me down my walk to school from Highgate Station to Shepherds Hill School in 1968. Not much seems to have changed, although I suspect that Mrs. Hamberger, my singing teacher, whose house was virtually next to the station, has long departed this world.
Fun! Just happened upon Crouch End online today. Then KZreadd it et voila. Cheers from Toronto.
Thank you such a wonderful walk I feel like I've been around London enjoying the scenes with you💚💜💚💜
09:10 Peter Coxhead also had two hounds that used to run freely around the Theatre School. One was named Caesar and the other Brutus. Great improvisation skills were quickly learnt when they randomly strolled on set whilst rehearsing. “Cry ‘Havoc!’, and let slip the dogs of war!” (One of the dogs has entered stage left and curled up in the corner to watch what’s going on whilst the actor has temporarily frozen) “And if thou dost find no dogs of war, the Principal’s aged hounds shall suffice!”
One of the best ones so far really enjoyed it and I loved life of grime Mr trebus was a legend
Yay! Another Joolz video, the perfect tonic to my gin!
Thank you for sharing. It's wonderful and informative. I already visited this place in August 2023 but you gave a lot of very interesting insights.
What an interesting tour walk. What a hot spot for talent and creativity. That bakery.
Always get a little buzz of joy when I see the Joolz video suggestion is actually brand new! Sunday night here, perfect way to forget about tomorrow morning! Also, back in the late 90s I worked on Sean Hughes show (the Irish comedian) on BBC Radio London (GLR). He lived in Crouch End and I went up and we got drunk one Sunday afternoon at the Kings Head with a couple of friends. However, I lived in Rotherhithe and had absolutely no idea how get home on a Sunday night! Took me hours!
Brilliant as usual...keep em coming Joolz

Thank you for the wonderful video. Heck, now realising how much I miss my time in and around Crouch End (1984-1992). Used to work at the Trades Union Congress National Education Centre (was Hornsey Art College now the school). Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox recorded at the Church Studio at that time too. There was a small cafe opposite run by an actress from the 50/60s - her name escapes me. Dunn's - best bakery for miles. The King's Head pub comedy nights were amazing. Saw many a good turn there....lots of whom became quite famous. Stink pipes....I live in Sheffield now where the stink pipes were shorter and topped off with gas lamps becoming "sewer gas destruction lamps". As an aside....actor Martin Clunes lived in a flat in Crouch End when he was with his first wife - early 90s. I've never been able to pinpoint where though.
Super video as always Joolz.
