According to another video about it the government actually started it. As the other commenter said, the did indeed have a big dumping place by the town and they’d burn it every year. Legislation changes outlawed this so then a bunch of illegal dumping zones opened up. Then they decided to take an old mine and make that their dumping zone to get rid of all the illegal sites. That’s where the fire started. They tried to do a controlled burn but the fire just wouldn’t go out. When the town started to talk about potential solutions, they covered up the origin of the fire.

This is in my area and it is beyond heartbreaking and sad. The efforts to save this little town have never gone unnoticed over the years since 1962. Even up til this past October 2018 when they hosted the 5th Annual Centralia Cleanup. So many people have gone there to visit Graffiti Highway and to get a first hand experience of what it is today, that so many have thrown their trash all over of what is left there today. Even though it is no longer recognized as the coal mining town that put them on the map, they are now known as Pennsylvania's Lost Town, due to their unfortunate events that took place. It's a shame that so many people had to lose their homes that they thought they would live in for the rest of their lives, but it was "Home" to more than 1,000 residents and only 7 remained in 2013. Even though it's abandoned, that doesn't give people the right to use it as their personal dumping ground. I wish that people could understand that and if they really want to help, maybe instead of bringing their cameras and their garbage, maybe they should get involved in the next annual clean up day or donate to help at least restore what beauty remains... www.centraliapa.org/help-cleanup-centralia-5th-annual-cleanup-day-october-20-2018/

WELL SAID AND I'VE LIVED IN AN AMERICAN TOWN THAT IS FAST BECOMING A CITY. I WENT TO SCHOOL CABOT, ARKANSAS, ALBEIT I AM AND WAS BORN A BRITISH ROYAL PRINCESS THAT IRONICALLY SOMEBODY PICKED UP ON AT AN EVENT. IN 1976, A KILLER F5 TORNADO LITERALLY DESTROYED THE ENTIRE CITY. HOWEVER, WE HAD A DECENT STATE GOVERNOR AND OUR MAYOR LOVED BY EVERYONE FOUGHT FOR OUR TOWN TO GET FUNDING TO REBUILD. WHY COULDN'T THEY JUST REBUILD AWAY FROM THE FIRES, INSTEAD OF FORCING PEOPLE OUT OF THEIR HOMES? IF THEY COULD SAVE MY TOWN THAT HAS MY HEART AND MY CHILDHOOD HOME IS STILL LIVED IN THEN THEY COULD HAVE SAVED THAT TOWN. IT WAS A BUNCH OF INCOMPETENT BEAUROCRATS THAT KILLED A TOWN AND HOW MANY MORE PEOPLE'S LIVES AND HISTORY GOING TO BE DESTROYED WITH IT. ANYBODY THAT ADDS RUBBISH AND DOESN'T RESPECT THE MEMORY OF THOSE PEOPLE THAT LIVED THERE AND WHAT FEW DO SHOULDN'T GO TO CENTRALIA TO DUMP THEIR RUBBISH. THEY SHOULD DUMP IT AT HOME AND LEAVE THE LEGACY OF CENTRALIA TO THOSE OF US THAT UNDERSTANDS HOW A DISASTER CAN DESTROY A TOWN, BUT DOESN'T WANT OR NEED PEOPLE DISRESPECTING THE MEMORIES AND HOMES OF THOSE PEOPLE ALBEIT NATURE HAS RECLAIMED.

If I’m not wrong now only 5 people lives in Centralia. Edit the main problem is that the remaining residents are elderly so when someone die due to age the population is destined to progressively lower to 0.

Unbelievably worthwhile footage in the name of Centralia's history. It would be worthwhile to return to Centralia and interview one of the remaining residents ....a 30 something young man who opens up the cemetery gates every day, decorates the town for Christmas and is committed to the community's legacy. The history of this community is not over.....there is more documentation needed. Thank you for your effort.

What's so sad is how long some of the residents held on, dug their heels into the ground, only to have to leave anyway. I can't imagine the longterm impact on the environment, & the town's people. It's amazing some were able to stay as long as they did, without debilitating symptoms. As nature reclaims the town, I hope that life thrives in this area again. What a huge, embarrassing "oops" for us humans. Thanks for that amazing old footage!!

Good Save!!!!! I had a college class for my degree in fire science where we came up with a plan of action to extinguish the fire. We based it off the mine fire in Eastern Kentucky. Researched costs, materials, labor, equipment, etc. And based it off of the dollar value back then and current value. Some of traveled down there and had the officials meet us as we presented it to them. The gentleman in charge just laughed at us. Total cost back then was $3.4 million. Today's cost was $200+ million.

It's hard to get an idea for how deep the holes go because they're just so bright. Some of them look like they're right under the surface, others look like they could go several meters down. I'd been thinking you could potentially get inside part of the mine shaft, but if the flames are able to just fill up the entire tunnels, then I guess not! This is really interesting and valuable footage- it should get submitted to some sort of historical archive or something. Thank you!

It’s already taken out Centralia, Byrnsville and heading towards Ashland.. and there’s nothing stopping it from getting there it appears. What’s really sad is the fire was mostly located on the southern most side of Centralia and the concept of moving people to the other side of town was not a bad idea! It makes you really wonder what the real reason for forcing people out of Centralia.

That fire in Centralia cole mines was unbeleavable, so scarry, a fire under ground. That is the most scariest thing I have ever seen. Man where does one run to. It proable take years before that will ever burn out, there is so much coal in the earth. I feel so bad for the people living there.I really don't think that fire would ever be put out, coal is very flammable. The only thing I am thinking if one could get hell a lot of soil and cover up the hot spots, and then put chunks of heavy rocks over that.

Unbelievable that this happened and so sad for the people loosing their house and homes. Once the last citizen is gone, the government will open up a new mine. Anthracite coal is well wanted for steel works and power stations. My brother is an engineer construction and building coal power stations around the world and it is not that easy to change to the crappy chinese coal. It doesn't burn as good. Meaning to change a lot on a power station.

Certain people who lived in Centralia or governed it have been saying this for years. Of course, the Government denied that it was true or mentioned that if they wanted their anthracite coal, they'd already have it. Well, they've had it for decades now. Not only will a new mine open up, you'll see a whole new Centralia built where the former town once stood.

Can't find anything on this, but do the 4 or five people there have public utilities? I would think all that had to be shut down about the time the gas station was taken out. Some reason I think in a doc from 2010 the' Caretaker' who was driven out, had a gas stove, most likely propane though. Just seem impossible to survive there with no food, water, access.

Great video, too bad the mine fire wasn't put out. Too bad Centralia is gone, but I would love to visit Centralia. I think that the government wasn't fair to the citizens, the fire could've been put out but the government was too lazy and treated the citizens like crap. Then over time the fire expanded, I understand they kept running out of money, they could've gotten more money and put it out the right way, not little cheap shots.

Harry Kies also mind you water evaporates instantly at the temperatures in the mines so filling the holes and pouring water down into them would just do more damage via pressure and allow more air in also sealing the holes does nothing as well due to the constant amount of gases being spewed out every second which makes new holes to vent pressure. Slurry cannot work because as stated earlier water evaporates leaving more fuel and sand simply melts and adds to the fire and if we continue filling we will have molten glass that will pour out making this town unsavable.
