The late Reverend James Cleveland said it best in his opening remarks on their “Amazing Grace” album: Aretha was the queen of music.

Wonderful. Thank you for posting this. She was brilliant during this period, too. It's just too bad she didn't get the recognition then that she so rightfully deserved. But ... when she arrived at Atlantic, she did so on a rocket ship!

She was so unbothered here. Her delivery was seamless and masterful. You can tell Sarah and Ella influenced her jazz style.

Aretha Franklin recorded great music for Columbia her live performances of these records outshined the heavy over produced products they issued. I believe had she been allowed to shine on record as she did in her shows the albums may have sold better.

She had a much richer, more velvety tone than Ella did. Probably why I've always preferred Aretha.

They were great records I have herColumbia box set I think the reason they didn't sell was because ❤the public's taste in music was changing they were looking for something different the young people didn't want to hear the music that their parents listened to

Well, unfortunately, Aretha recorded NINE jazz-oriented albums for Columbia records, most of them sold very poorly. Many people attributed this to the fact that her background was very much rooted in gospel, and not in jazz. Even in this song, at the end you could kind of sense that she wanted to add a little more soulful gospel influenced ad lib that is more characteristic her personal style. Instead, she goes for a more clean sophisticated sound that is reminiscent of her idol, Dinah Washington.

The Black adult audience bought her Columbia LPs for the most part. An additional issue was the label's marketing department didn't have the experienced staff to push the records further.

Singles like Take a Look Running out of Fools and Cry like a Baby should have been top 40 hits especially Take a Look that sounds like a song Tony Bennett would do and it's message was very timely and relevant for the sixties@kevingoins9858

The running out of fools album had the most potential to make her cross over out of all the Columbia material IMO
