The last time I saw Skynyrd, four generations of the Van Zant family came to the stage. Including Donnie from .38 Special. The warmth shown by the crowd was something truly special. A moment in time I will never forget.

Another band member who doesn't get all that much recognition is Leon Wilkeson on bass. That 30-second passage near the end of the song when he steps in from the right (at 14:28) he's fingering those bass guitar "cables" (I don't consider them "strings") so fast I thought he might break one or two digits playing so hard. You can pretty much guess what's about to cut loose when that curly haired gal in aviator sunglasses starts gearing up her enthusiasm.
I'm considered an old lady now. But I grew up listening to and witnessing live the best rock n roll music ever performed! So fortunate to have been a teenager in the late 60s and 70s! Nothing beats this music!

I say it all the time: Its worth being old now to have been young then. I'm pushing 60 and got to listen to the greatest rock music in history. Best thing? My two sons are totally into this music too. My younger son, at about 14 years old, asked me "Dad, what the heck happened to music? Why does ours suck so bad compared to this?" Not sure why, but it sure does!
I was in there that day. It’s impossible to describe the power of their performance - not just this song. The entire set was tight. LS brought that place down.

Just think…, Allen Collins was about 17 when he first created that outro guitar solo. Remarkable… And high five to Smokey for naming Tuesday’s Gone. Absolutely love that song.
The Band in that show was. Billy Powell on keys, Steve Gaines (short hair) guitar, Ronnie VanZant vocals, Gary Rossington (first slide lead) guitar, Allen Collins (end shredding solo) guitar, Leon Wilkerson bass & Artimus Pyle on drums. That's a fantastic story!
Such a legendary song, I only knew 1 person that didn't like this song. Saw them a few years ago at Mohegan sun and this was the final song. During the solo the singer would put his hat on the mic and walk of stage and the backdrop would have a photo of the original members that died in the plane crash. Also free bird was at the end of the devils rejects. During the final shoot out. One more, the plane that crashed Aerosmith turned down the plane right before them because the didn't like the condition of the plane. They thought it was to much of a wreck.
@WhizzingFish12

I used to live near the plane crash site in Mississippi. They were also getting a bad vibe about the plane (it had literally shot flames out the back of the engine a couple of flights before) and one of the backup singers refused to fly on it and went with the equipment vans instead. They had decided that this was their last time to fly on it. Man, if it had only been one flight earlier. Weirdly, RVZ said he wouldn't live to 30; he died at 29, only a few weeks before his 30th bday.day.
I still get chills to this day when I hear this song. Free Bird was played at the end of Devil's Rejects. Thanks for this reaction!
When you started talking about playing in front of an energetic crowd, it makes me want to share a bit of personal history. When I was in a metal band (a lifetime ago) we went through many growth spurts. At first, we played only at one specific club that was very small, had no stage, you just set up in the corner, but it was an all ages place which was cool because it was always packed. Packed being 70 or 80 people. Those were some of the best shows because you're so close to the crowd (inches in some cases) but ultimately we wanted to grow and do certain things that required an actual stage and we wanted to move in a different direction thematically and have an R rated stage show. That took about a year of reforming the band with some new guys, creating a stage show, building props etc... but now we had no where to play. When we got into some different clubs, our very first show was ok (crowd-wise) because we hyped the hell out of it, but it took another year before word spread and we gained a following. That year was extremely tough. We had to do so much more; we had created this bizarre horror themed theatrical story to go along with our set that to play empty shows (and we played A LOT) just burned us out. I remember one show at a fairly large club, one that could handle 500 people and zero showed up. Literally, it was just girlfriends and the bartenders. Playing a show like that is hard for anyone, let alone a show that's intense and interactive. You lose energy fast on nights like that; it's like a rehearsal and a bad one at that. For the next three years... those were really fun; best years of my life! Our smallest show was 70 or 80 people, but when we played our first Halloween show, it was in front of 1500 people! The club had to turn people away. The excitement you feel is like getting a shot of adrenaline, you are pumped. It feels like you could play for 5 hours straight, but we only had a 45 minute set. Our Halloween shows were the best because we wanted to continue that Alice Cooper / White Zombie kinda vibe where we had actors on stage, Giant props, blood, slime... you name it. I guess you could throw in a little Gwar in hindsight (no crazy costumes though). That led us to playing some outdoor festivals, the kind that radio stations put on, not like an Ozzfest or anything, and those were our biggest crowds at around 5,000, but they weren't our best shows because it wasn't "our" crowd. They were fun and energetic; the more people the better, but the people there were fans of radio play rock music. That wasn't us, lol. When you play in front of a crowd (big or small) that are specifically your fans (or... fans of bands similar to you) that's special. Those were the best days. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Smokey said it best "When they (the crowd) are into it, you really try to give it all back to them at the same level". One hand feeds the other. You wouldn't exist without them; it really is magical. I don't do drugs, I never have, but if you could bottle this feeling up... I'd do a shot! 😅
What a brilliant rabbit hole to go down so many great songs
So fortunate to be able to say I saw the original Lynyrd Skynyrd in January 1976 and paid like $6 for a ticket.. it was my first concert without adult supervision...

True story
It's funny that their first album is called the pronounced album because they gave the pronunciation for it on the front of the album cover laugh. And it was actually named after their gym teacher. He later recalled that they were kind of fuck ups but that in reality he really liked them a lot. He was good natured about it when he was interviewed later.

FREEBIRD!! Happy Friday boys.
There was a time where people used that flag just to signal that they were rebels at heart. Not in the sense that they followed the confederacy, just that they didn't follow the rules. There's rappers who've worn it too (Andre 3000 in the "Ms Jackson" video for example). And Skynyrd stopped flying it when a group of fans made it known they didn't like it. Incidentally in 79 the members of Skynyrd were involved in a plane crash. Their singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, backup singer Cassie Gaines and I think 1 other member were killed. They tour today with a few surviving members and Ronnie's younger brother Johnny singing. Their other brother Donnie sings for .38 Special. I've heard it said that Johnny had to leave the stage the first time he sang Free Bird as it was too emotional and the crowd sang the rest

These guys were like that every performance Ronnie VanZant was the nucleus and the glue that made this all work. There will never be another band like this.
Lynyrs Skynryd name originated from their high school gym teacher, Leonard Skinner. He made them cut their hair if it was too long. The Rebel Battleflag shown was used at that time by their record label, MCA. They were considered a 'Southern Rock Band.' They were from Jacksonville, Florida.
Since the plane cash, 3 more on that stage have died. Ronnie's brother Johnny currently fills in on vocals and does a great job. The only original member who is still alive is Gary Rossington. Some consider Ricky Medlocke an original member also. Rickey is one of their current lead guitarist. He started with the band in the early days and actually recorded some songs with them before he left to form his own band. Blackfoot. One of my top 3 favorite bands of all time. Their catalog is deep and quite frankly amazing. They probably have a dozen song I like more than Freebird...

......this is truly one of the best live performances ever captured on video and audio !!! Another great live album is 'Full House' by the J. Geils Band recorded at a club in Detroit in the early 70's. Every track is a winner especially the harmonica solo called 'Whammer Jammer' by their harp player Magic Dick !!! 🤯
I was lucky to have seen them in concert. When they got to the instrumental part, the crowd leapt to their feet.
more talent on that stage that day than all the rappers combined over the last 30 years. They was the real deal
Morning guys. That would be Gary Rossington on lead guitar. My daughter is named Tashauna which is a song on a Rossington Collins Album, a band formed after the TRAGIC END of Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Hey guys, great reaction! I work for Live Nation and the last time Skynyrd was in concert,a few years ago, the put Ronnie's hat on a stand as a memorial. It was pretty awesome! Keep up the great work!
Saw you guys make eyes at the rebel flag but you have to remember this was 40+ years ago when people saw it as a sign of Southern hospitality. Many Southern black people flew and loved the flag back then too - it wasn't seen as racist - it was just a Southern thing. No the boys in the band were not racist in any way, please just put that out of your heads. Great reaction guys. Thanks for the fun.

Short story short: the band got their name from their high school gym teacher who was against guys with long hair. Keep in mind that was in the 60s, so probably around the time the Beatles were big and had the Mop top hairstyle. The teacher's name was Leonard Skinner. So that's how they got the name. The band was formed in Jacksonville FL, roughly 90 mins away from where I'm from.
I've seen them 3 times. Also this is what most concerts were like in the 70s
Saw Skynyrd last week! Greatest concert of my life. Johnny Van Zandt and Ricky Medlock did full justice to to 70s version of the band.
That transition was awesome that crowd was insane
Great reaction again.. I seen 'em 3 times .. Rock on..Jax Fla rocks..
Pure fucking music. No autotune needed.
My oldest brother was a lead guitarist and I remember watching him put himself through so much pain training his fingers to take all that playing, I seen him play for an extended amount of time, then he'd put his fingers in ice water to numb the pain and do it all over again to create the callouses so it wouldn't hurt anymore, crazy technique, but it worked for him.
No cell phones. Everyone engaged!!!!! Love it!
I was at that concert, it was fantastic. I've forgotten the other bands that played. Heart might have opened for them, but I have been to so many of them, can't keep track. Those were the days. We'd wear a tank or bathing suit top, short shorts or hip huggers and party like crazy getting tons of exercise from dancing. I don't remember any big problems ever at these concerts. People were just in a good mood..Lynard Skynard were top of the charts, awesome.
