Freddie wasn't operatically trained, in fact his only musical training was as a child on piano. Everything he did, he learned as he went along. Makes this partnership with a renowned opera singer even more amazing!

Freddie could sing the telephone book and I'd happily listen to it. This song was recorded in the late 80's and was used for the Barcelona Olympics in 92 and achieved chart success that year but Freddie passed in 91 so he wasnt able to perform at the games as hoped.

@@rogerw-interested Yes, the album was released in 1988. But Barcelona had then already been picked as the location for the '92 Summer Olympics (they do this years in advance because it takes a country years to prepare for it). Freddy was asked to write a song for the occasion. He had been a fan of Caballé and wanted a duet with her. Since the admiration was mutual they then decided to record an album together. So yes, this song was specifically written for the '92 Olympics in Barcelona. Dates alone don't always tell the whole story.

He once did a Spanish interview mentioning his admiration for the famous opera singer, somehow word got back to her and she requested a meeting. Close friends of Freddie's said he was never as nervous in his life as he was meeting her. They became close and Freddie wrote an entire album for her. She was echoing his lyrics in Spanish though he did sing a verse in Spanish, paying homage to his beloved friend Monseratte. Written for the Olympics in 92, sadly Freddie never made it and passed away in 91. She performed the song alone accompanied by a recording of Freddie's voice.

Great Reaction guys! Probably already mentioned in comments, but Freddie and Montsy (it’s what he called her) truly loved each other. If you choose to watch more of them together - especially How Can I Go On.. you’ll see how towards the end of the video they start holding hands, and Montsy said during an interview that she could see tears in Freddie’s eyes and so she decided to just hold on..

Freddie enjoyed both opera and ballet not trained in either, so unsure where you got this from, he wrote an album for the two of them and this was first released in around 1987 and used for the Barcelona Olympics in 1992 which he never lived too see, these two became great friends in around 1983-ish when he saw her in Opera Covent Garden London. There were a number of people at this concert from all musical backgrounds, it wasn't just these two

I've never read that Freddie Mercury had any vocal training at all. He was self-taught. In later years, as he was looking for 'solo' projects, he was in Spain and mentioned in an interview his favorite singer was Spanish Opera star, Montserrat. She learned of this and this came to him via Montserrat Caballe requesting of him to write a song for submission to the 1992 Olympics at Barcelona (her home town). Freddie obliged. He wrote this & they recorded it along with an entire album of just the two of them. It's wonderful. My favorite of his 'solo' things. Also, he & Montserrat became friends. Their voices blend wonderfully.

As always you give honest and fun reactions, different but fresh and friendly. Montserrat Caballé is one of the best opera singers in the world, a true Diva that Mercuri deeply admired. In Catalonia (Spain), whose capital is Barcelona, there are mythical mountains due to their shapes and because there is a sanctuary that houses a black virgin and is the patron saint of the country. These mountains are called Montserrat which means toothed mountain, so Montserrat is a very common female name. La Caballé was from Barcelona. I am from Barcelona and very proud of this fantastic city. The event was the presentation of the 1992 Olympic games. So Keep on rocking guys !!! Come to visit us !!!

Freddie had been a long-time fan of opera, especially favoring Montserrat Caballé, the Spanish Opera Soprano. In 1986, he mentioned on Spanish television that he would be glad to see her in person. Later, when Barcelona was chosen for the 1992 Summer Olympics, Caballé, a native of the city, was asked to help with producing a song for the games (her brother was in charge of organizing the open ceremony). She summoned Mercury for the task (it turned out that she was a Queen fan). They first met in 1987 in the lobby of the former Ritz Carlton in Barcelona. Freddie was so nervous about meeting her that he was early (Freddie was notorious for being at least 15 minutes late to every meeting.). He had brought a pianist with him and began to perform a song of tones he had written for her called "Exercises in Free Love" - kzread.info/dash/bejne/jIt3u5VtmcXal84.html. (This is Freddie in falsetto) Montserrat loved the song so much that she asked if she could perform it at a concert she had scheduled for the weekend at Covent Gardens. Of course, Freddie agreed. She then took the song and added words to it, renaming it "Ensueno". She and Freddie recorded it for the Barcelona album as the song "Ensueno" - kzread.info/dash/bejne/doOtta5td7zHdLw.html. Freddie and Montserrat wrote the song “Barcelona” and it was selected for the 1992 Olympic theme. The recording was complicated by the tight schedule of Caballé. Thus to spare her time, Freddie would record the song, also singing her part in falsetto. He would then send a tape to Caballé to prepare her for the joint studio sessions. Freddie and Montserrat (or Montsy as he called her) became good friends. It turned out that Montsy was a big rock and roll fanatic and there were several stories of Montsy and Freddie's drunken antics. The sad ending of the story is Freddie passed away on November 24, 1991, before the 1992 Olympic games in Barcelona. Because he knew he was dying, Freddie and Montserrat produced this video of them singing "Barcelona" and it was used in the opening ceremony. FYI - Tsetse is pronounced ˈ(t)setsē', the first "T'" is silent.

This is a link to Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballe. She is a well-known and revered Italian opera singer. He was in Spain when he mentioned in an interview how he felt about monsey, her nickname . he had said she was the best voice in Opera he had ever heard . So word got back to Monsy and she contacted Freddy for this collaboration for the song for the 92 Olympics in Barcelona ( usually people do Barcelona first but you can do it in any order. I'm just adding this so that the comment applies to your reaction.) This song is actually about the first time Freddy met Montserrat . They ended up doing a full album titled Barcelona . I recently read in a comment that after her work with Freddy she had been approached by quite a number of Pop/rock singers to collaborate with and she said no that was reserved for Freddy and I won't do it with anybody else . Freddie was a long time fan of Opera. In particular he felt Montserrat had the best singing voice of any opera star. She was from Barcelona. The song had to be completed by 1988 to be considered for the opening ceremonies of the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics. Freddie told her 2 two years prior to his death that he would not be there to sing it with her because he had AIDS. From what I have pieced together she was the first person that he told even though his bandmates were seeing This is the link to their performance of Golden Boy. kzread.info/dash/bejne/gYSd3NuJZNuZYKw.html This is the link to their performance of how can I go kzread.info/dash/bejne/naeC0cdxh5XQhMY.html This is the link to their performance of Barcelona

In case you were wondering and also just simply for your information: Freddie Mercury had been approached by the International Olympic Committee for to write a song for the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. Those who know about Freddie Mercury know that he very much loved Opera music and as such was a great admirer of Monserrat Caballe who funnily enough is actually from the Spanish city of Barcelona. I gather that both Monserrat and her daughter travelled to London once or twice to work with Freddie at his home. But in case you had been wondering about the sense of occasion, and just how majestic a performance it was, hopefully this explanation will help to fill in some blanks.
