Freddie Mercury was a man of many talents and many different sides. The songs he wrote for and with Queen filled stadiums around the globe and have rightly gone down in history, but he also embarked on a solo career that took him from the clubs of Munich and New York to the great opera houses of the world.
He was the ultimate showman, but he kept his private life away from the prying eyes of the media; a larger than life rock star who loved disco, classical music and ballet. He was a restless spirit, a true chameleon who revelled in his own contradictions.
All the different sides of this iconic musician can be found on Freddie Mercury: Messenger Of The Gods - The Singles. All formats released September 2nd 2016.
This wonderful 1987 video, capturing Freddie Mercury's unforgettable collaboration with Spanish opera diva Montserrat Caballé, accompanied the very first single from the 'Barcelona' album (which was to follow a full year later). This unexpected and unlikely merging of talent took the world by storm, and this was the first of three singles released from the album. The Director was David Mallet and it was filmed at Pinewood Studios in London. The single was released in the UK on 26th October 1987.

Freddie to Montserrat: "I would like to do a song with you." Monserrat: "Just one song?" Freddie: "How many songs would you like to do?" Montserrat: "How many songs does a typical Rock'n'Roll album have?" Freddie: "Like, ten songs." Montserrat: "Okay, then we will do ten songs together!" In the end, "Barcelona" (the album) only had eight songs, but still. It's a good album. My personal favorites are "The Golden Boy" and "Guide Me Home":

When Freddie was talking to her about her part of the song it’s said that he even sang her part to her, which is truly amazing. Also at the time he was doing this he was already in treatment and knew that he didn’t have a lot of time left which is one of the reasons he wanted to do the duet. Unfortunately Freddie died 3 years after this video/duet was completed. R.I.P. Freddie We all miss you, Darling.

Here's a little backstory to this song. - 1987, Freddie was at home since after finding out that he had AIDS, he stopped touring with Queen and he didn't know what to do with himself. Out of the blue he exclaimed "God, I wish I could have gone to see (Legendary opera singer) Luciano Pavarotti!" And his long term boyfriend Jim went "What's keeping you, take a plane to Italy and go watch him!" - And so Freddie began to attend opera performances left and right. But it was when he saw Montserrat Caballé live that he stood up and exclaimed "That's the best voice I ever heard!" He made a few calls to her management and met her. The two got on like a house on fire. - But when the subject of recording an album together came to be, Freddie found out how closed minded the Opera world is, NONE of the symphony orchestras he approached wanted to work with him since he was a lowly pop singer. So, Freddie went "Well, if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself!" and recorded almost all of the music himself using synthesizers and samplers.. - Montserrat for her part said that she enjoyed the recording process, Freddie and Jim were perfect English gentlemen and treated her like royalty. But her fellow Opera singers weren't so accepting. Singer Ingrid Bergman condemned Montserrat for having done the album and snidely remarked after hearing about Freddie's death that he "Must have screamed himself to death." - Fast forward to the 2012, Queen's "We will rock you" musical was doing really well and the musical arranger of the show, Stuart Morley, went "Now let's record that album with a PROPER orchestration." and basically re-recorded the entire album using the London Symphony Orchestra, much like how Freddie had intended it to be.

They were such great friends. She & Freddie were supposed to perform this at the opening of the Olympic games in Barcelona, but Freddie passed away before that time came. Other singers & opera stars offered to sing it with her, but she said she'd never sing it with anyone but Freddie (and she never did). At the opening of the Games, she performed live and Freddie "sang" with her by video on screens placed all around the stadium! There is video of this on KZread and it's a beautiful, but tearful, event. 💖

They did an entire album which he wrote the music for. While she sang a couple of the other songs with other singers, she refused to ever sing this with anyone else. She was one of the few who knew how sick he was. He had to tell her that he wouldn't likely be able to sing this with her at the Barcelona Olympics because he probably wouldn't live that long. They still used the instrumental version as the theme because it was just that good.

They did an album together ❤ Read the back story about this song 🎵 🙌 Freddie was dying at the time this was recorded and passed away when they played it at the Olympic games. Fortunately for fans that they will always live on in their music 🎶 and our hearts 💕

In 1986, Queen played concerte in Barcelona. Freddie went to the usual interview for television. He hated these interviews and he used not to go. But, as he said, the group insisted to him a lot that time, so he went. Everything was well. Journalists of Spanish public television were very kind with him and he finally was very relaxed and open. And one of the questions to him was "Who is your favorite singer?" and he answered "Montserrat Caballé". It was a surprising answer from a rock pop star of that time listening opera. But he said he love her artistic talent and voice. Then he mentioned to somebody that he would like to record an album with her and that arrived to Caballé's ears after some months. And she decided to put in contact with him. Freddie said he couldn't believe it. they had a meeting in Barcelona and he was anxious as a rookie. He presented to her some pieces and an idea of this "Barcelona". Then they together completed the songs of the album and had the intention of singing together on the Olimpic Games in Barcelona of 1992. But, as we all know, AIDS took Freddie away from us on 24th November 1991 and it was impossible.

Freddie saw her perform, at the Covent Garden Opera House. With her in mind she wrote this song for the 1986 Olympics. They loved each other so much that she was sitting beside him, when he died.
