Freddie wrote this specifically for Montserrat, or Montsy as he called her. She was his favorite singer. They did an entire album together and this song was entered as a piece for the Barcelona Olympic Games for 1992. Had Freddie lived it would have been the official song for those games. It was still featured around the Olympics and thus charted at #1 in many countries.

There was no actual 'official' song to the Barcelona Olympics, however this was used as the 1st song in the Opening Ceremony and therefore can pretty much be considered as close to an 'official' song as you can get.

@@jedislap8726 The song was composed by Mercury and includes violins by Homi Kanga and Laurie Lewis, cello by Deborah Ann Johnston, horn by Barry Castle and percussion by Frank Ricotti. It was written to be the theme song of the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, but was replaced due to Freddie's death. It was however performed live at the opening by Montserrat, with Freddie's voice recordings and it was used as the title music to the BBC's coverage of the 1992 Summer Olympics. The official song chosen for the Games was "Amigos Para Siempre", written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Don Black, and performed by Sarah Brightman and Jose Carreras.

@@dtwolfe63 Source please as I haven't found a single one that says Amigos Para Siempre was the OFFICIAL song of the Games. The only thing I can find is that both that and Barcelona were chosen as 'themes' for the opening ceremony.

He sent a demo to her called "Exercise In Free Love" when he requested a collaboration with her on this album. He adored her, in the beginning of the song there is a verse where he sings, "When you walked into the room, you took my breath away" he was speaking of her. Attached is a link to his operatic vocals, it's extremely high in note, so at first you wont believe it's him, but you'll hear the signature Freddie come out as he comes down the register just for a second. It's piano, and vocal notes, no words, but will be one of the most beautiful things you've heard. He sounds like an angel singing. Watching this was a pure joy watching your reactions to this video I think you need to watch Freddie and montserat song How can I go on

Freddie fell in love when he went to the Opera in London with this lady and he went on to write a whole album for the two of them, but it was quite late in Freddie life, they used the title track for the Barcelona Olympics in 1992 and Freddie even got in on the London 2012 Olympics as a hologram with the interaction with the crowd as both Roger Taylor and Brian were taking part in the ceremony, Fred is never left out of the live concerts

Freddie wrote this song to hopefully be accepted by the IOC as the official song of the Barcelona Olympic Games.

I never get tired of hearing this perfection.

You must do more Freddie Mercury stuff. Any of his solo songs will give you chills. This is only one song on the Barcelona album.....try The Golden Boy from the same album. Freddie singing In My Defence is epic!

Your reaction was really beautiful. All the emotions I first felt at the time this first showed. I can remember repeatedly rewinding my tv to play over. Those two became really close and you could see the mutual love and admiration when they were on stage together.

So this must be, without doubt, my favourite reaction to Barcelona! The joy on your face at hearing this masterpiece for the first time was wonderful to see. It is exactly how I felt the first time I saw it performed. :-).

Freddie loved opera. When he heard Montserrat sing, he wanted to meet her, and musical history was made. She proposed doing an album together. Her only stipulation was that Freddie write a song about her hometown, Barcelona. Montserrat was one of the handful of people who knew he was dying of AIDS. Their respect and admiration for each other is actually a great platonic love story.

Montse was the last true operatic diva of our time there will be no more. The king of Spain called her a national treasure and she was also known as La superba. Freddy fell in love with her singing since seeing her sing the first time and they met and it was pure heaven so yes you should hear the rest of the album that they did together. Truly something we won't see again.
