Guys Drummer in this video is Mike Portnoy. Mike played in DT from 1985 to 2010. Then he left the band. In 2023, Mike returned to DT.

Guitarist here who's (sometimes successfully) tried and played DT stuff a while ago: You learn and memorize the riffs one by one, the solos, the little licks until you can play them so good that you don't have to think about them anymore, it's like learning a word as a kid and now you can just say it. Then you learn and memorize the song (most of the time you already know it by heart because you listened to it a lot), basically just when to say which word in the sentence, to stay at the example. Hope that made sense. Also, as I said, when you practice this shit, at some point, you know it by heart; it's a first listen for you, but the allmighty Petrucc, aswell as his group of musical madmen, have played and heard this stuff a million times.

This song, the "Instrumedley", was only performed once for Budokan in Tokyo during their tour supporting their album "Train of Thought". Instrumedley is a mash-up composition of multiple songs from Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment (a side project of three Dream Theater members as well as Tony Levin who has played for Peter Gabriel), and I think some other quirky lines from elsewhere. They already have the basis of memorizing different sections because those sections are already from a song/instrumental that they've written. Piecing it together (arranging), though, was definitely masterfully executed because you'd otherwise never know that this is 13 different tunes. Playing it is a true feat of muscle memory and understanding and internalizing time. It's very cool!

John Petrucci (guitar) and John Myung (bassist) were childhood friends. They attended Berklee school of music together and while walking through the practice area they heard a drummer (mike portnoy) playing along to some Rush songs and had to meet him. Initially they recruited friends Kevin Moore (keyboards) and Chris Collins (vocals) and formed Majesty. They replaced Collins with a singer named Charlie Dominici and later changed the name to Dream Theater. After releasing their first album they changed singers again to James Labrie. After releasing 2 albums with him, Kevin Moore quit and was replaced by Derek Sherinian who had played keys for Kiss and Alice Cooper (and can briefly be seen in Wayne's World). 2 albums later and they asked Jordan Rudess to take over on keys. He was a juliard trained player. In 2010 Mike Portnoy left the band (and recorded the Album "Nightmare" with Avenged Sevenfold after the Rev passed) and was replaced by Mike Mangini who was a professor of drums and percussion at Berklee.

Soooo.. 1) How do they do that? They're just that damn good. 2) Do they play it the same, note for note verbatim, every time? Yes, yes they do (I've seen them more than 20 times) 3) How do you get a whole band of players that good? 3 childhood friends, Berkley School of Music and Julliard School of Music. The core three members of Dream Theater are John Petrucci (pronounced PE-true-Chi), Jon Myung (bass) and Mike Portnoy (drums). Their original keyboardist was Kevin Moore. Petrucci, Myung and Moore all grew up in the same Borough of NYC. After High school they all went to Berkley School of Music. There they met Mike Portnoy and started a heavily Rush/Yes influenced band that came to be called Majesty. They found a singer (I feel horrible, but for the life of me I can't remember his name) and put out an album called "When Dream and Day Unite" under the name Dream Theater because Majesty was already taken by another band on the label. By the next album "Images and Words" they had picked up James LeBrie as a vocalist. Kevin Moore left after that album and they picked up Derek Sherinian on keys. He only lasted one EP and one LP. Not because he wasn't a good player, Derek Sherinian is a superb keyboard player, but because the record label dicked them around for 5 years, wanted them to be more "Hair Metal". During that time Petrucci and Portnoy did a side project called Liquid Tension Experiment with their current keyboardist, Jordan Rudess, who was given a scholarship to Julliard when he was 9 for classical piano. After Liquid Tension Experiment, Jordan formally joined DT full time. That's how you get a band that good.... 😁 Sorry to get long winded.....Great reaction, I loved watching your faces, they were priceless. ✌ Edit: I should also add that they had another drummer named Mike Mangini for a decade while there was a bit of a feud between Portnoy and other members. I don't want to leave Mangini out, he is a phenomenal drummer in his own right. Portnoy rejoined Dream Theater late last year.

Dream Theater does have simpler songs without the histrionics like this track... John Petrucci (guitar) said for him, it is more difficult to write a short, simple song than a complicated, epic track. I recommend the simpler Dream Theater songs to check out - 'Another day'... 'Forsaken' ... 'Along for the ride' ... 'You not me' ... 'A rite of passage' ... 🤘🤘🔥🔥

They are allergic to songs that have a 4/4 time signature…and if they did play a song in 4/4, they would find a way to make the song sound like it’s actually in 12/8, 9/8, 7/4, 5/4, etc….✌️🎤🔥🥁🎸 one of the most talented bands ever!! So glad Mike Portnoy is back with the guys…he’s the perfect drummer for them…his playing style, energy, and talent are always on point…😎

As a music major who loves DT, it's practice. Their brains aren't different; they just practice a lot. Anyone can do it, you just have to be willing to put 10,000+ hours into it. The trick is love, if you love it, putting in 8 hours a day of serious practice is possible. In the end, you gotta love it and put in the work.

There are patterns! Just using 7 as an example of an odd time signature/meter. Say "1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, 3" and then repeat it like a cadence. You can say it as fast or as slow as you want, but when you put that cadence in a metronome you can begin to understand how all this incredible music is made. Rush - Natural Science has a perfect example in the middle of the song of how to count this meter.

Back in the day when the two towers fallen in NYC they played a concent in NyC and I love the performance of two tracks in particular... the spirit carries on ft theresa Tomasson.. they played with the gospel group of one of the most famous church in NYC. That performance it's the best I ever heard and seen.. and the track finally free..every one nailed it you should react to both them... thank you for your great contributions.. You asked if they play it every day (every show) the exact same way every time. The answer is yes. Dream Theater is so complex as it is, they can not confuse other members of the band with something improvised and random and throw them off their game. Also, they admitted that the fans like the music from the CD and they want to play it as per the CD as they recorded it. They can't disappoint the fans by changing or removing their favorite parts.

Mike Portnoy (drums) of Dream Theater: "I’m just a music lover and I love playing. I’m a workaholic, so it’s what I do. I have no problem juggling all of them, and to me it’s a pleasure. But, yeah, it’s a lot of work and a lot of diversity." People like the members of Dream Theater are dedicated and creative musicians who don't thrive on repetition or patterns... It bores them. Mike Portnoy once said that playing their hit single 'Pull me under' ... for the Xth number of times is boring to him (Portnoy does have OCD, which means his brain is constantly looking for new ways and avenues to engage or entertain him... He admitted it would often drive his bandmates crazy...) But Dream Theater love to experiment and let the music take them places they haven't been... Some bands are like AC/DC and Accept... they make the same record, same style... over and over again... But bands like Rush... Dream Theater ... Deep Purple... Led Zeppelin ... Queen... Judas Priest - they never made another record hoping it was just like the last one. I know hip hop and rap music is all about 1 beat and riding and rhyming to it... But rock music can be more than that... and it is a challenge to experiment and make the track stand out and appeal to the listener by changing tempos... changing rhythms... etc.
