Yeah, I'd start with the Mike Portnoy stuff, it's just a cut above anything released in the last 10 years. Maybe Metropolis II: Scenes from a Memory (the main song in the medley above, _The Dance of Eternity_ is from this album)...it's their best-written album and a fan favorite. The song _A Change of Seasons_ is also a must-listen, but just get the song, no point getting the whole EP unless you're actually buying a physical CD (and who does that anymore?). And from there, I'd go to the double-album, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, which is some of the most epic music ever recorded.

These guys are masters of their instruments. The song you chose is a medley of many of their songs and they have a massive library of a huge range of types of albums too. It is really hard to say where to start. As you heard, they are a progressive metal band. I'm a fan of listening to whole albums by them. I would start with Images and Words, front to back that album is incredible. If you are looking for something more modern and heavy try Train of Thought or Octavarium. Great stuff, keep it up. Btw, huge fan of Babymetal, glad you got a chance to dig deeper into their music.

Images and Words is still the best representation of who DT are at their core. I'd go for Awake next because of it's complexity and the 7 string heaviness. Then a modern album like A Dramatic Turn of Events.

@@Mattyjs100 Rush is my favorite band and their songwriting chops blow Dream Theater out of the water, but they're not anywhere near as technically skilled as DT. But DT isn't the most technical band either... I haven't followed the genre for years, but even back when I did, bands like Spiral Architect and Spastic Ink could play circles around DT as well. DT is the Prog Metal band that many musicians watch to have their mouth involuntarily sag open. It is a band of extreme virtuosos. It can be A LOT to take in. I left their Scenes From a Memory album in my car for a year straight without listening to anything else when I was driving and I was still going "Wow! what was that?" a year after I started listening to it. These guys haven't had much in the way of mainstream success. I think it is a bit too much for many people. These guys are who I watch when I want to see the top echelon of musicianship. No one exceeds them, though many great bands (Haken, and more) have been inspired by them. This crazy skill level is not always what music needs, but it has its place. We need a dream theater. This is to basketball for example what it would be like to go watch the best player at the time doing his thing. Same too with this music. Or watching the greatest gymnast pull off their routine. Composition does not require this level of skill, but there needs to be a band like this to remind us of just what we can do. This is LIVE... friggin' insane.

Dream theater isn't a one-shot reaction band, it's more of a rabbit-hole band. They do have some mainstream popularity, but they are considered more of a music nerd's or musician's band. Their following is still huge though. Prepare for another Nightwish type of experience if you start digging into their catalog.

  • @JayveeTheStand

They were once called a perfect band. Having all of the members (except vocals) top musicians in the world base on what instrument they played. They also try to make really technical songs so only few can cover their song and if your band can cover their song why the hell are you not yet famous? The level of skill required to play their song is superb!

  • @lukep692
    @lukep6924 жыл бұрын

They’ve pretty much dedicated their lives to practicing. Where most of us have a day job where we work 6-8 hours, they’re practicing that much daily. It’s pretty insane, but they obviously love their work. Their concerts are really long and super enjoyable, and it’s obvious how much work they put in. A rookie practices until he can get it right. An expert practices until he can’t get it wrong.

The final section, from 12:20 on, is called Hell’s Kitchen, and I think the full piece is their finest composition along with the song it leads in to, Lines In The Sand. As a piece of music it’s just breathtaking. For something different, I suggest you look at the work of Steven Wilson, solo and with the band Porcupine Tree. Examples include Routine, Harmony Korine or The Raven That Refused To Sing (solo) or Trains, Anesthetize or Fear Of A Blank Planet (PT).

Four of the most talented musicians alive, plus a singer who’s not bad by any stretch of the imagination. Dream theater is a powerhouse of a band. Hard to go wrong with them, but they can be a bit overwhelming if you’re not used to technical progressive music. Good entry points are As I Am, Pull Me Under, Glass Prison, This Dying Soul, Home (though that one benefits most from a full album play through as it’s a concept album telling one huge story).

I would highly recommend "Metropolis Pt. 1 - The Miracle and the Sleeper" from their 1992 Masterpiece "Images and Words". To me this song embodies everything DT stand for. I must have heard it at least 500 times during the years. James Labrie (Vocals), John Myung (Bass GOD) and of course John Petrucci (guitars) are the remaining members from this era. Jordan Rudess (Keys) and Mike Mangini (drums, meh) are "new" to the band. Sounds funny, because JR has been for some 20 years now... 😂

Under A Glass Moon, Take the Time, and Learning to Live are the best songs to showcase their ridiculous talent. In fact, ridiculous is an understatement. Collectively, they are definitely in the running for most talented group of musician in the last 35 years. James Lebrie (not heard here) is an exceptional vocalist; John Petrucci is undeniably in a group of guitarists that could all be labeled "the best ever;" John Myung is the Victor Wooten of bass guitar (lol!); Kevin Moore, Derek Sherinian and Jordan Rudess are all unbelievable keyboardists; and then there's Mike Portnoy, he is easily on the list of greatest drummers ever with individuals like Neal Peart, Buddy Rich, Keith Moon, etc..

I just took a look at your 365 playlist, and I'm already very impressed! You just got a new subscriber, because I intend to listen to every reaction you post in this series. Now, I have a couple of suggestions that I hope you will eventually be able to get to. The first is Steve Stevens, the fantastic guitarist that performed on and co-wrote many of the hits Billy Idol had back in the '80s. There are two sons of his, very different from each other I will recommend here. The first is an acoustic guitar piece named Run Across Desert Sands. Stevens is a master of Spanish flamenco, and you will find that influence most strongly here. The second song, with a lot of heavy electric riffs, is Small Arms Fire. I doubt you'll find live performances of either of these, but either one would be an outstanding choice. The second artist I'd like to recommend is Roy Buchanan. While there are many great songs that showcase his talent. the one I'm going to recommend is The Blues Lover. Edit: One more I need to mention: Chris Rea, and although there are songs that became more popular, the one I'd like to suggest is Looking For a Rainbow. Chris is a fantastic guitar player, and really knows how to use a slide.

Great choice! DT is an amazing band, they are all masters I can't really think of any band that sounds like them. Bands have tried... but DT is so technical and their transitions are seamless, I haven't heard anyone come close to duplicating them. Glass Prison would be a good one for you.

You picked a good song for a react, they have tons of great songs, if you're interested, I think another viewer also suggested the "Images and Words" album, lots of superhuman material on there, this band is unreal in the scope of their talent. Hope you become a fan, and provide some amazing reacts.

Haken and Leprous are two bands that are very much influenced by Dream Theater in different ways. Highly recommend them. Anyone wanna list some songs you think he’d enjoy by them?

You are a guitar player - you need NEED to listen to John Petrucci's (the guitarist in Dream Theater) solo album called Suspended Animation. Songs like Damage Control and Glasgow Kiss are gonna blow your mind (i think)

This was a live medley of a variety of their instrumentals. A way for them to showcase their killer instrumentals in one extended jam. While a bit frenetic...a sick medley. From the best progressive rock band on the planet.

This is when Dream Theater drums still had a heart and soul unlike now where it's just a drum machine on repeat... Portnoy flipping and tossing and spinning drum sticks never miss a beat and still has a soul-filled sound to the drums .....The new drummer Mangini ... just a drum machine on loop

If you are in to instrumentals, you should definitely check out Asterism! I would also greatly suggest the band Mercenary for your Discover365-journey. They have made a bunch of brilliant songs, which I think would be right up your alley, especially 11 dreams, Lost reality, The hours that remain or Soul decision! :) Keep up the good work - your honest reactions are much appreciated :)

Hey..im glad u discovered DT...Ive been a fan for around 30 years. They have had 2 singers, 2 drummers, and 3 keyboardists...but...their music has been amazing the whole time. I dont know what your background is or your musical tastes are...but...the best album to sample DT is Octavarium. It showcases every side of Dream Theater. So whether you like metal, progressive, pop, jazz...something is there to sink ur teeth into. Enjoy, i promise you wont be sorry!
