Mike Portnoy is not dream theater’s drummer anymore, he left the band in 2010, and Mike Mangini replaced him in 2011, incredible crazy drummer as well!

Mangini is as robotic as a drummer gets. Technically he's very good, but he's about as interesting as blank paper & has the dynamic range of drying paint. Just my (40+ year playing drums) 2 cents. Kia kaha \m/

@@zappagorewaikato1009 You can see his talent and he is technically a better drummer than Portnoy but I agree with you. His playing as impressive as it is, is sort of like watching paint dry compared to Portnoy. Also, just my opinion, the songs are overall better songs with Portnoy as he was a major contributor and leader of the band while Mangini just seems to play the drums. And this is coming from someone that thinks Portnoy was a major dick with what he pulled when he left the band.

@@boki1693 100% correct sir. The other massive hole he left for me personally when he departed & which I rarely hear mentioned are his vocals. It really exacerbated how thin James' voice can be at times. Kia kaha \m/

That wasn't an opinion, that was truth. I love Mangini as a person, but even when asked about feel on the drums, he said he doesn't even believe in it. Notes are notes and his job is to play them. Then listen to someone like Gavin Harrison play drums and you can feel his whole soul, his whole unique style. Portnoy said that he could never play like Keith Moon, Neal Peart or Jon Bonham. Sure, he can hit the right notes, but it's not the same. Only Keith Moon, Neal Peart or Jon Bonham can deliver how they deliver.

Mike Portnoy's kit for DT was called The Siamese Monster because it was two kits (with two thrones) in one assembly. The main part is a double kick setup that he pretty much ran with from the start. The single kick is a simpler setup similar to what he used on a side project called Liquid Tension Experiment. He liked the smaller kit because it challenged him to change his creativity from "just hit another drum" to utilizing better writing to get a similar feel.

Instrumedley is simply put, a medley of all instrumental parts/songs that they had at that point, including some stuff from a side project called Liquid Tension Experiment (LTE). LTE also is an amazing act to react to, some notable songs are Acid Rain, Another Dimension, Paradigm Shift and Universal Mind. Their 2008 live show is considered legendary and among the best versions anyone could find of their work.

Wow! Mike Portnoy before he left the band, but he is still good friends with John and Jordan because they had a side project called Liquid Tension Experiment with Bassist, Tony Levin. Tony plays a bass instrument called Chapman's Stick. There are rumors that LTE planning to be reunited, but they have to work out scheduling issues.

So as the title says, this is from "Live in Budokan". At that time Portnoy had a drum set labeled as the 'Siamese Monster' (derived from his former 'Purple Monster'). Therefore the question is not really even about "how many toms he's got", but to actually have a double-chair setup in your set, le fu-?
