Thanks man! All the different sections were insane but they did sound like they just threw them together. They didn’t seem to flow/connect into each other well and I think that effected the impact of the drops. But hey, at least it didn’t get Blocked! As always man appreciate the support! 🤘🍻

@@dmusiclife5727 that's exactly what this song is. All the sections are excerpts from other songs from them. All from the 12-suite suite they did. The only thing that is original for this song is the lyrics and the keyboard and guitar solos basically.

@@dmusiclife5727 This is basically like watching a 10 minute cliff notes of the three Godfather movies - you're not really going to appreciate it unless you watch all the movies. Like the Godfather movies, this is really a band that you listen to the first couple times and hear a lot of different things. The more you listen to them, the more you appreciate the nuances and clever writing. It's definitely an acquired taste.

"The shattered fortress" is the last song of the 12-step suite and describes the journey of Mike Portnoy (the old drummer of the band) dealing with alcoholism...

To understand this song and why there's so many different melodies you would have HAD to have listened to the previous songs in the AA suite of Mike Portnoy's (The Glass Prison, This Dying Soul, The Root of All Evil and Repentance) from the previous 4 albums. That being said, the song stands well on its own anyway :) Great reaction guys!!

I believe you should listen to other DT songs. This one in particular is a mesh of several songs that have appeared in differente albums, with the idea of making with them a great suite, something like a symphony, with all those songs being each one somewhat like a single movement of the whole symphony. So it is as you have said: it sounds as a musical puzzle, because it IS so. So this is mostly a DT fans dish, not an informal listener to get into their music. I'd reccomend you to give a listen to something like In the Presence of Enemies Parts I and II, live. It's a mind blowing experience. Give this a listen, please.

The Count of Tuscany is a true masterpiece, I really recommend it. It’s more of a journey than a regular song :) Scene Four: Beyond This Life is also an extremely nice song, a bit heavier as well For more normal heavy metal, As I Am is a great choice, it goes real hard Side note, I think you would really like Death to all but metal - Steel Panther. It’s a normal heavy metal band, but very funny. Think Electric Callboy, but just heavy metal🤘🏼

The thing with Dream Theater, and really Progressive music in general, is that listening to it once is almost never going to be the best experience of the song, because it can come off as overwhelming and hard to follow. That's why follow-up listens in time are very much recommended. It's like if you had to keep walking through a tall field of thick grass to and from work everyday; it's so much to get through and you feel the time and effort it takes to get through it, but each time you go through it, a path starts forming through the grass and you not only get through smoother but you start to admire the scenery around you. Multiple listens ca let you anticipate certain odd breakdowns better and expose to you some more hidden details in the music that you didn't hear before. This would all definitely be the case...except for this song. This is one of the worst track you could have picked for an early DT listen, not in the sense that it's a bad song, far from it actually, but because this song requires a whole lot of context from prior DT songs and albums. This is the last song in a 5-track suite based on drummer Mike Portnoy's (different drummer than the one in this video) struggles with Alcohol and his recovery through the 12 Step program in Alcoholics Anonymous. The song harkens back to all the previous songs in the suite, basically being like a mashup and remix of riffs, melodies and lyrics, with a handful of new ones. Had you listened to the previous 4 tracks before this one, you would have had a lot more context and satisfaction with the way they referenced all these pieces. Not only that, but EVERY song in the suite is a masterpiece in their own right! If you're interested in going through the 12 Step Suite, here is the running order (I'd recommend sticking with the studio versions because live versions tend to lean more to audience hype rather than the mood of the music). -The Mirror (1994) [Prequel to the suite, often still considered] -The Glass Prison (2002) -This Dying Soul (2003) -The Root Of All Evil (2005) -Repentance (2007) -The Shattered Fortress (2009)

Hi from México nice tshirtt caifanes btw and im going to talk español.

This song is part 5 in a 5 song suite, 1 song from 5 different albums based on the 12 Steps of AA written by Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy who was an alcoholic. They were going to play the songs together, but never got the chance because Portnoy left after this album. He himself has performed the suite with a different singer and musicians. The songs are: The Glass Prison from Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence; This Dying Soul from Train Of Thought; The Root Of All Evil from Octavarium; Repentance from Systematic Chaos; & The Shattered Fortress from Black Clouds & Silver Linings.

The Glass Prison is part 1, This Dying Soul is part 2, The Root of All Evil is part 3, and Repentance is part 4. In all it's 5 epic tracks over 5 albums. You'll hear recurring themes musically and lyrically throughout the entire 5 part suite. All of it is truly mind-blowing!!

Great video as always! If you're going to check Dream Theater live, the best experience was the Score Anniversary show. From there you could go a little crazy and do... Octavarium? (or is it too soon yet for a 20+ minutes song for you... I don't know). Anyways... pick something from the Score show and it will be top tier quality, especially from what you said about the band being more cohesive. Outside live performances... maybe Constant Motion, As I Am, The Count of Tuscany, 6:00, Metropolis Pt. 1...

Love your reactions!! I’m saying this comment not knowing the extent of your knowledge on the band DT. Mike Mangini IS one of thee best drummers out there. And from Boston. He was a music teacher at MI in Boston. The Music Institute. If you haven’t seen it, watch his audition for the Band. After Mike Portnoy left DT back in like 2010? Not sure of the date. They tried out like 5 different drummers. Good videos.

But don't give up on them yet, they have a ridiculous discography of songs, and most people start with Pull Me Under as its pretty much the only DT song you might actually hear on the radio.

Mangini is an amazing drummer and good replacement for Portnoy, it's just not the same for me now. My taste has also grown since then as well so likely something to do with that. Rush Sucks! they try to sound like Dream Theater. And Neil Peart is jealous of Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater. Rush is too over played. They never really achieved anything except recognition. And the reason there not together today is because Neil Peart Was Rush. He wrote all there music. The other two guys were lost without his guidance, and now we see that. Your girl there is smart. She was really engulfed when you guys played Shattered Fortress by Dream Theater. She was so pumped to hear them again, and then you stepped in and doubled down or Rush. DT puts Rush to shame as far as being Virtuoso's. They can't even hold a candle to DT. Now please do some more Dream Theater so your wife can enjoy some real music. You guys didn't even touch the tip of the iceberg. Thank you for letting me vent. Every time I watch your DT reaction I want to say to you what I just said. TY

James Labrie became a terrible singer through the years. In the 90’s he was great but now it’s painful to hear.
