Fun fact: Lyn, the singer, doesn't speak a word of English. That's why some of her pronunciation and annunciation seems a bit off, like what you noticed with "tin man". She was getting coached both on how to literally sing the lyrics, as well as how to perform them in terms of emotional delivery and emphasis. Her performance only becomes even more impressive knowing that!

@@extraspicychicken4044 lol I was so shocked when I first watched a lyric video. I was like "wait. She's not saying demon?"
Noticed that you were kinda shocked when the song stopped abruptly. It's a game battle theme which means it needs to be able to smoothly loop back to the beginning. Battles can take quite a while so this song may need to loop many times while still feeling like one song. It's one of the things that's unique video game music, the composer needs to marry up the beginning and end of a track.
The singer wasn't very successful before this. She has a really deep voice for a Japanese woman, so it was hard for her to find work when the expectation is to sound higher and more pop. She sounds like a black woman when she sings, but for the more Jaz focused sound track of Persona 5, it worked. She was discovered by the composer in a Jaz club. I've seen interviews with her, and she is extremely grateful to the composer, and is really appreciative of her fans. She worked her ass off and had everything against her. Now she sings sold out concerts. I really hope she returns for Persona 6. Usually with each game the composer works with a different singer, so each games sound tracknis entirely unique.

@int3rst3llar_duck I did, too. It isnt unusual for composers to use American sinhers if they plan on the music to be sung in english.
I love the fact that this plays when you fight one of the final bosses, yet the theme is actually YOUR theme, and he's fighting you. Such a dope way to slide in a awesome theme for a protagonist.
As an addition to this song, it's noted that while this is a climactic battle theme, unlike a lot of games where the theme is assumed to be the boss' theme, this is the protagonist's theme. Prior to this, all of the area songs are a reflection of the bosses of each stage while the battle theme remains that of the party. This is the first time where the terms of the game are dictated by the protagonist instead of being reactionary. The story is a culmination of his efforts in getting to this one point so that he can look at the villain dead in the eyes and stake his claim. The lyrics are also phrased in a way that reflects the theme of the game itself. Of course, when this theme is used for the bonus boss, the lyrics change in meaning from "this is my one moment to shine" to "Dude, are you TRYING to kill me?" For the part about being relatable, a primary theme of the game runs a lot with the theme of "I had to go to prison to become a criminal" and "you have to get your hands dirty to get the job done". Unlike the previous two games where the protagonists were squeaky clean, this guy has a track record with his ticket out being a literal revenge plot.

As a cool aside as well. By the lyrics, it could be assumed this is the protagonist and the boss where this plays for the first time basically debating each other.

@@TSLsmokey Spoilers because I word dump, I apologize in advance: ... I would argue it's not since the song is about someone that is punching up. The palace is formed from someone that is assured of their position and are built on smugness. "Last Surprise" plays during battles as a break in the ambience to highlight that the rebellion is happening right under their noses. When "Life Will Change" plays, it's their calling card theme that spells out that they have flipped the table and are ready to face the villain. This change in cognition is also represented by the fact that the song overrides both ambience and battle themes, meaning that change is inevitable; either you win or you die. The villain themes are built into the area itself and you hear it throughout until the end because at that point, they are aware that the house of cards is crashing down. Going down the list: King, Queen, and Slave: The theme of a complacent individual that is so assured of his position that the theme has no rush. It's devoid of any real intent and is only focused on carnal pleasures as noted by the seedy "risque" undertones. A Woman: A somber theme that sounds as if you are in a mausoleum... because it is. The entire palace is built on the life and blood of artists that are condemned after they proved useful with the only thing to remember them being a passing image and their work on display. All reaped by the owner of the museum where stolen art is housed. Price/Price Reprise: A relatively upbeat theme that gets flipped when you head underground. The trickery of an easy life up top where things seem all fine and dandy before he gets you with the real subterfuge. The bop of the first part of Price also sounds like the music you would use in gangster/criminal movies as a way to introduce them in an upbeat way before things get ugly. When My Mother Was There: A theme that lacks malice and while melancholic, still seems to be a soothing theme... because the palace leader is not actually out to kill you and actually invited you in. Added to this is that it is a soothing theme in a desert full of horrible creatures because it is meant to calm the visitors as if to tell you that the palace leader wants you to succeed and is ringing true despite the palace trying to tell you otherwise. Fittingly, it's the only main game palace where you get a party member instead of putting someone in jail. Sweatshop: A sharp contrast from the other themes, this one is a complete shift from the jazzy theme to a very synthetic beat as if it's disregarding the listener... because it is. It doesn't care because the leader doesn't. You are literally beneath him as a robot that should be functional, not heard. It's also the fastest pace of the themes to show the grueling nature of what his mindset entails. Whims of Fate: The first theme in the game to have vocals which is a key distinction from the other palace leaders in that there is a clear defined message. This reflects the fact that while it is all about cutthroat gambles in the courtroom, unlike the others, there is clear intent behind the palace itself and while it is still subconscious, she CHOSE this path instead of being driven by it (every other palace leader is defined by their palace whereas hers represents her means to an end). This distinction is important because her desires are at odds with her identity and it almost seems like a mantra to trick herself into persisting down her path despite the fact that she may not even agree with it. It's also the only palace leader to willingly make a change of heart without getting it stolen because she rediscovered her drive. Ark: While it seems fairly generic in terms of an area theme, it is actually a dark reprise of Tokyo Daylight, the overworld theme. The contrast is key in that while overworld represents the daily lives and hustle of Tokyo, Ark is meant as a personal message that Tokyo is his. Gentle Madman: This theme is one that is built on contrast. The notes are beautiful and it SHOULD be uplifting... but it seems wrong because the undertones drag it down so that it unnerves you. It represents the belief in goodness built with the wrong methods. This culminates in the dual themes of "I Believe" and "Throw Away Your Mask". This is the only palace where the thieves and the palace leader are fully aware of each other and are able to meet head on. This not only lets both of them have voiced themes that are diametrically opposed; one cannot be heard if the other is allowed to persist. The former is the message of the thieves telling the leader to back off and let them live their lives while the latter is a plea from him to stop resisting. The Latter is somber despite the message because the leader truly believes that he is helping and that the sad act of putting down the thieves is for the greater good. On the other side, "I Believe" is an uplifting callback to Life Will Change where it isn't just a challenge, but a proclamation of why they value the change despite the difficulties.

No, no. The protagonist really wasn't looking for revenge while everything happened. He just hurt emotionally for how his life turned, but he want to show himself and the world, he wasn't wrong for trying to defend the weak. Still, The villain you first hear this song with is the one who turned your life upside down, and he is the responsable of many wrong things, the public want him, but this is your chance to strike down the biggest evil in the city, but overall this is your chance to let him and the entire city know that is fine to stand agains injustice, for all who suffer in silence. All you have been fighting was for this point, it's your change to make a change so go and take it, make a rivers in the desert, an oasis for the weak. Thou, of course it would also be good to make that bastard pay, but i never feel like the protagonist was acting for revenge in mind. The theme is about people who is suffering because of things they had no control, getting the backlask of society, just for doing the right thing or wanted to help someone, all this just because some bastards in their high horse had your number so now they stand up to not let the abuse continue and let others who suffering they can also stand up.

Here's the lyric for Rivers in the Desert: It's now or it's never, and I've got to Make my decision This time it could be my moment Is this a mirage or a chance to fulfill my mission? A river in a dry land The last ace in a lost hand A heartbeat for a tin man Oasis in a singed land I'm keeping the balance, but I'm standing On razor's edge now Move quick or my life is over One strike, just a feint, then ... I'm outa his field of vision Don't ask why I'm ready but I'm ready to Strike him down now A chance at a new start There's no time for indecision A river in a dry land The last ace in a lost hand When the hope of new beginnings burned our feet Now we need it: A heartbeat for a tin man An oasis in a singed land Remind us what we're here for: Creating new life Creating rivers in the desert My heart is a furnace, (It's) Hot as hell in my world of conflict One goal is what keeps me going Take back what I lost to ... The bosses of greed and fear, yeah Don't ask why I'm ready but I'm ready to take Them down now The time for a new start Is constantly drawing nearer A river in a dry land The last ace in a lost hand When the hope of new beginnings burned our feet Now we need it: A heartbeat for a tin man An oasis in a singed land Remind us what we're here for: Creating new life Creating rivers in the desert When a cool drop of water's all I need Gotta clear my head of anger and greed A place to refresh heart and mind, Can I find Some time in Rivers in a dry land The last ace in a lost hand When the hope of new beginnings burned our feet Now we need it: A heartbeat for a tin man An oasis in a singed land Remind us what we're here for: Creating new life Creating rivers in the desert
Glad you enjoyed it! The Persona game series as a whole has always had solid music, but in my opinion, Persona 5 takes it to another level! This song also happens to be what's playing while you're battling the climactic boss that the game has been building towards, so not only is it a great song, but it's also played at the emotional height of the game which elevates it even further! Yumi Kawamura(P3 Woman) sounds good, but man, understanding what she's saying is way harder than the other two. This song kinda is a fusion of elements from all the themes throughout the game. They melded them together flawlessly great capstone to the game.
Not gonna lie, the first time I heard Lyns voice I didn't expect it to come from such a tiny woman. I played this game when it released years ago and I'm still listening to the tracks
Not necessarily a fighting game, but this is the song that plays during the penultimate boss fight
Hearing and understanding the lyrics, and knowing when this song plays I almost love this song even more. It's such a triumphant song for my favorite character from the game.
I really love how you break down the lyrics, i dont see many reactors do that. I’d love to hear your interpretations on the song “Throw away your mask” from Persona 5 Royal!
What I love about the writing of this song is that it can either be sung from the perspective of the protagonist or the antagonist, depending whether you interpret the words as either coming from a place of selflessness or narcissism. Very thematic for where the song is used.
Dude that analysis was hella on point. If we didn't know it any better, one would think you played before. Fun Fact: When you are unsure whether it's an anime or a game, that is because Persona is essentially Anime: The Game. It is almost like playing an anime. And hella stylish to boot. It is very much a game about rebellion. Rebelling against society. Rebelling against villians. Against expectations. And it ends by killing God with the power of Friendship and the power of "Fuck you, that's why."
Ay yo, thanks for reacting to this fire song and breaking down all the little amazing things about it! Persona 5 is a game, and this track in particular plays during one of the final, most emotional boss battles of it! The first phase has an instrumental version, while the later phases switch up to this vocal version you hear now. ouo I think at its core, Rivers in the Desert is about making the impossible happen. It's the story of an underdog always on the brink of losing it all. Not just the battle, but by letting themself get too caught up in the fight and being like the villain. That's what I think can be taken away from it without playing the game, at least. 0u0
Very solid analysis. You got the gist of the song and the game's feel with your interpretations. I'm impressed you were able to pick up so much of her lyrics. I've been listening to this song for years and still can't understand her.

So this song is from Persona 5 as you already know, this is based on around the main in the front with his mask who is known as Joker, who is able to wield multiple personas. The big character in the back is known as a persona, The Gentlemen Thief Arsene. Essentially this song is used to represent all the characters struggle in one way or another who are also friends with Joker. His friends are (in order met): Ryuji, Mona (the cat), Ann, Yusuke, Makoto, Haru, Akechi (also his rival and sub-antagonist). Fun fact all their personas in the 5th installment are based around thieves. While Akechi also uses Loki (based on Nordic mythology).
Once you realize what this song is based around and where is placed in persona five it makes the song even better
The line you were curious about was " a heartbeat for a tin man." I'd imagine it being a reference to wizard of oz as well as being a good line.
It’s nice to see you can appreciate this song in a vacuum (I assume). What elevates this song from good to amazing is the context in which it first plays in the game. I always felt that it’s the combination of the song itself and the context in the game that makes it so hype, making it less obvious to get excited about it you don’t have that that context. But I’m happy you found appreciation for it regardless!
100% would love to see more video game ost reactions, there’s so many good ones out there.
All the persona games have incredible songs and ost
Great reaction hope to see you react to more tracks from persona 3 4 or 5 they all have amazing tracks
Hey Knox I’ve watched a few breakdown videos of yours and I’m so glad to see this posted. Persona is one of my favorite series and they have some amazing soundtracks. This song is one of the best in the game
man i love persona 5, its such an incredible game, and easily has one of my favorite soundtracks! if you keep on the p5 train, i highly suggest you listen to whims of fate, its such a good song! great video as always ♥
The Persona OSTs are SO GOOD! I can really suggest Last Surprise and Beneath The Mask from P5 and Mass Destruction from P3.
Persona 5 is a pretty successful JRPG(Japanese Role Playing Game) and it has combat, but it's turn based so you take turns in battle. You can get advantages for an extra turn tho and turn the tables on the enemies but this song Rivers in the Desert is a song that plays I think in the second to last boss of the game. Persona 5 is known for its great music track and great story, as well as great characters and stages. This song is basically to hype up the boss fights against the toughest enemies
You actually made this reaction video the same day I finished Persona 5. The timing man! You should do more Persona music
Persona 5, especially Persona 5 Royal, the definitive edition, is an INCREDIBLE game. Might be fun to watch a playthrough or even just play the game. If you want to play it, however... I'd have to suggest you don't waste a second of time you are given. It's on a calendar based system, and you'll only have so many days to do what you have to.
The context really elevates this song. Its already amazing but when you go from phase 1 into 2 and the song, which was previously just bgm kicks in with the lyrics and you just ascend the hype.
It's crazy how he pretty much perfectly describes the context just by analyzing the song, despite knowing literally nothing about Persona. That shows not only how perfectly written the song is, but it's a testament to his own skills as an artist.
If you haven't played it yet, I highly recommend it. The extended version, Persona 5 Royal, is my favorite game of all time. They recently added it to basically everything. So if you have a modern console, you will likely be able to play it.
Every persona game has a genre of music, persona 5 is acid jazz. If you want some rap, go to persona 3.

Mass Destruction is the most obvious choice, likewise the opening theme/Burn My Dread, Deep Breath Deep Breath, A Deep Mentality (Lotus Juice Remix) and for a choice without vocals The Battle for Everyone's Souls. Other than that, if you haven't listened much to Big Boi's solo work post-OutKast, would heavily suggest that too!! On your free time I fully recommend you hearing the whole OST for the game, it's a masterpiece. But it would be even better if you get to play the game. I hope someone from patreon sees this and recommend it
Awesome reaction Knox! Really enjoyed watching your reaction and analysis of it!
Fascinating how the music clearly resonates with you, you understand the themes and vibes they're trying to get across. Yet you still manage to come across as almost, dismissive of multiple genres "I know nothing about the game or the anime, whatever it is"... Immediately followed by "It's very relatable, you can pick up on the story, be entertained by it, you can tie in to it..."
OMG! Please react to more of the Persona Ost!!! Also I would totally watch a letsplay of you playing this game!!!
i am really impressed on how you nailed the thing of the music, the meaning, the achieving the impossible
Dude you nailed the theme of the game! This game is relatable on SO many levels and this song showcases that.
If you keep going with these, the other big tracks are going to be "Wake Up, Get Up, Get Out There," "Life Will Change," and "Last Surprise. The first one is the game's opening theme, the second is almost like a response to it that plays during the final push before reaching the bosses, and "Last Surprise" is the standard battle music.

Was I the only one screaming "YEEESS!!!" anytime he mentioned the distortion in the music knowing that is a core theme in this particular game?
Persona 5 has the best battle themes and I will prolong fights just to listen to them!
That's one recommendation I clicked in an instant
Not subbed but this popped up on my feed (into the games). And yeah when your talking about the metaphors of the song is basically the theme of the game as your turning the life of the protag around for the better + rest of this soundtrack is great too.
You are absolutely correct the song is about making the impossible possible.

If you haven't already, listen to Mass Destruction from Persona 3 It's a really awesome rap and my favorite battle theme 😄
Yeah man! We do create those rivers in the dessert!
Video game! (Also an anime, but primarily a video game.) This is the boss-battle theme for one of the emotional climax points in the story. Persona music tends to go hard in general (Shoji Meguro, bringing the composition A game), and P5 in particular is funky as hell. "Last Surprise," the main battle theme, also slaps. Meguro has said before that the in-game music, when it has lyrics, is deliberately written in English to be less distracting to the Japanese players - the singer's voice becomes another instrument. And then the English-speaking players get to rock out while they're playing. XD
This game is one of those rare ones where the soundtrack is one of the best parts of the game. Sometimes i just let the menu music play in the background while I do stuff

Oh it's both and it's amazing.
life will change, other p5 ost , tell even more about the game even not say a word about the history of the game, and yes is a game , and yes i am a big fan
Now you gotta react to Life Will Change from Persona 5
this was the album of the year for me. Incredibly fucking slept on music.
"i love this distortion" oh boy do i have a funny story to tell you
ahhhh the final boss theme is so goood 😌
This is the first video I've come across of yours, so I don't know if you react to video game music often (I'll check out your channel after I watch this video!). But if you do, or want to, I would highly recommend some tracks from the Xenoblade franchise
"The Baddy" in the back is actually kind of the alter ego of "Phantom of the Opera" in the front xD
What’s fun is this song is more about the antagonist then who you are playing in the game. Same goes with the song in Persona 5 Royal - Throw Your Mask Away. That one would be an interesting one to react to. The song writer is Lotus Juice who writes quite a bit of rap songs for the series.
Yo you gotta do Daredevil next from Persona 5 too!
Yeaaaaa, i love that song
Persona 5 is part of a spinoff series of the larger Shin Megami Tensei umbrella They have some solid tracks throughout the franchise as a whole, another series with particularly good ones under the umbrella that tends to get less spotlight is the Devil Survivor spinoff series.
This plays while you're fighting the Japanese equivalent of Senator Armstrong. This game is wild. You should react to some Persona 3 music, each game in the series has its own overarching musical theme and that game's theme is hip-hop.
Did you do Hamilton some time ago? Nice of you to react to this but I wanted to know your background, I love when people that doesn't know what persona is, the listen to all the songs
This entire game is just 100 hours of bobbing your head like that.
"I don't know what that little bat cat thing is up front on the left." 🤣🤣
When the boss comes in but the player's theme plays. Hypeeee
When I first heard this song I thought she said “a heartbeat for a demon”, I later realized that she said “heartbeat for a tin man”
Welcome to the wonderful world of Persona 5, where all secrets lay bared, all ambitions fulfilled and all souls burning with rebellion. Steal your heart!
