I lived 20 years in the wilderness living off the land without electric power, saw very few people, I went in the wilderness in the U.S. at age 21 and came out at 41, I am now 67 years old, in good health, because of the way the world is going, I am going back in a year or two. Thanks for sharing your story. I think more of us could adopt a lifestyle of living with less amenities, as you say, the way the world is going necessitates it. An off-grid lifestyle, in my opinion, is a great way to do just that. C

Interesting set up. I spent 10 years in the Infantry & living under a tarp or hootchie was my bread & butter. It’s good to see different ways to set up a tarp. The prussic knot is a good idea. If you were to put your tarp under the ridge line then you could adjust the height of your tarp with the prussic knot used on both ends. You just need to re-tension the corners & then you’re set.

You can put the line through the loop in the trucker hitch twice which allows you to tension without having to pinch and hold while you secure the knot, give it a try if you haven't already👍

I love your videos. Have you ever tried the easier way to secure that bowline instead of running the entire cord through the loop. Just pull a bight through it a little and insert a stick. So much faster to install and to undo. Especially if the weather is bad. Saw this on Dave Canterbury’s site. You can also use a slippery half hitch on that truckers hitch and not have to pull all the line through it either. Saves time and is so much easier. Especially if you have a lot of line to pull through it.

Hey C. That was very well done. I know the terrain well. Nothing grows above shoulder height in the fynbos and you need to trek into the kloofs to find any decent anchor points. Def gonna use the prusik knot on my next berg mission.

You could also use a rolling hitch, rather than the prussic or evink hitch. A rooking hitch is easier & faster to tie than both of the others. You also don’t have to pre-tie anything other than a small amount of p chord on the corners of your tarp.

Clarise, Just found your channel & subscribed. Nice video in live, adverse conditions. Like how you fluently & confidently speak knot-ese. I have a couple of questions. Why not use prusiks on both sides of the tarp? What is the purpose of the fig-4/Evenk/toggle/secured Halter combination (which does take extra practice and recall) v. prusik & toggle (or prusik + securing knot thru tarp loop)? The prusiks can be pre-mounted and stored on the ridgeline ready to deploy for immediate use. You end your video with good comments about preparation and practice & bad conditions, fatigue, etc. Using two prusiks (perhaps a third to later hang a lantern/light) might help simplify and speed the setup in tough conditions while physically/mentally tired.

Howzit John, great comment and questions thanks for dropping it here. Glad you subscribed too. There are two advantages to the figure 4. First: You have a little more reach because you can choose how long your guyline is so the tarp can stay tucked under your arm more easily while you tie it off. To some people this may just be easier to manage in high winds. Second: I recently decided to use an overlanding shower curtain from my vehicle as a tarp without having planned to do so. Of course I didn't have any toggles pre-tied to the shower curtain so made use of the fig4 again. I suppose there are other ways to go about using prusiks without toggles too. What it comes down to is that you have more than one option, you never know when plan A isn't going to work. I like your idea of the Prussik for the lantern👍 C

@LiveReady Hahaa! Yeah, one must work/adapt to what ya have. While you had the tarp under arm, I noticed you were standing quite close to ridgeline and worked with both hands. If you haven’t already, I’d suggest you check out the Farrimond Friction Hitch. It’s an easy way to create an approximation of a 2 or 3 wrap prusik using a section of a single line, like the guyline attached to your tarp. One knot, no toggle, and is finished in “slippery’ fashion, making it super easy to untie. Look forward to viewing your further adventures. JEG

I sleep in a camping hammock pretty often. Your tarp game is important if you want to wake up dry. Lol. On my ridgeline I leave the end of the line bowline on. But I just push a bight through the loop, place a toggle through the bight and tighten that when setting up. When I'm breaking camp just pull that toggle out and the whole end drops. Of course you can use a bit of stick instead of carrying a dedicated toggle. I just like the convenience. Also, I leave the prusiks on the ridgeline and pack it hanked with the loop and prusiks hanging out the end. Deployment is extremely fast, typically under 2 minutes for the ridgeline and a staked out tarp.

Women are smart I remember when I was in a tent homeless this man and woman and it was pouring down raining my lighter was soaking wet I was trying to get a fire going and they come walking up this couple and right off the bat she started laughing at me she got a fire going but she didn't use a lighter and she used a bicycle tube she was real smaller her boyfriend on the other hand was like me I had to get on to him I wanted the fire

Hey. I'm not knocking the way you prefer to do your tarp. Everyone has their preferred methods but from my experience bungees just never held up. I used bungee for quite a while but ended up moving back to paracord. I just found bungees snapped too easily, weathered quickly and also came loose too often. plus in strong winds it would just flap about too much. so anything on the edge of the tarp was at risk of getting wet. I believe they teach cadets to use bungee is because it's easier. A lot simpler to teach kids and even new recruits to use a hook rather than tie knots effectively.

I always like your videos, but you are on a downslope in this video so the rain is going to flow down over you. good set up though, BOB.
