HAMMOCK OR BIVY TENT? | How to choose between a hammock and tarp or bivy tent emergency shelter

Need a bug out bag shelter, hammock or bivy tent? Which is best? I break down the best and the worst of hammocks vs. bivy tents for camping or emergency shelters. There are many shelters to choose from, and whether you choose hammock or bivy tent you will have to deal with the pros and cons of each option. Make sure you know what you're letting yourself in for by trying out both options before you need either your hammock or bivy tent in an emergency.

There are advantages to both set ups. The bivvy can be closed off, and retain more heat. The tarp can also be closed off in one side, creating a better wind barrier. The tarp and hammock setup, does look comfy, but needs to be staked off better, and maybe lower. This will prevent more heat loss. Thanks for the great content, as always.

Hey Stefan! You're right on all accounts. A tarp is really so versatile it's something I would recommend everyone carry anyway. C

Interesting topic. I guess the landscape and season ultimately has the final say. I have a Tentsile Una treetop tent and a Hennesy Hammock Jungle Explorer. In the bush I must admit I gravitate to the hammock 9/10 times. I think setup time is a big factor here...but also needing 3 trees with the right angles as opposed to only 2 for the hammock. Convection is an issue with both, so on colder trips I'll put some insulation between myself and bottom of the tent or hammock. The larger work/living space under the tarp is important if I'm planning on being there a few nights. Being raised well above the ground does provide the option to hang your backpack and other gear within arm's reach right underneath you, where the hammock does not easily provide this luxury, unless you have a second Ridgeline under your tarp, but slightly away from the hammock...this is tricky though as you are most likely accessing it from lower than your pack...not fun. For most mountain hikes I pack a tent, knowing that eventually the altitude is going to stop providing trees. Thanks for the vid. It's good to play around with all one's options. Like the bloopers and extras 👍 Keep adding.

You use cca. 5 meter long life-save-strap. (3m 10 nodes + 2m + 3m 10 nodes and 2 professional climbing carabiner) This will protect you from falling branches. Build the tarp over it. You are happy with many strap-nodes. Hang the hammock from it. You are happy with many strap-nodes.

A swag tent would work well on the raised platform, it would seal you off from the bugs.

When the apocalypse happens, and I somehow manage to survive the initial stages, I am going to opt for the tent as my survival shelter. I feel I might be a little better off than the person that opts for the ground sheet and hammock.😁

@@LiveReady Yeah. The tent is an under represented shelter in the survival community. Although it's not as cool or creative as a tree fort, I feel it's pretty good. Giving a shoutout to the good old fashioned tent. Tried, tested and true.😐
