Hello from Sweden. 🙂 Basically it's the five C's of David Canterbury that applies in most situations. Good quality videos you make, the way they are filmed looks more like a one million + subs production 🙂 / Johan

Ditch Mylar for SOL Heetsheets and similar from other companies that don't rip from one hole like Mylar does. Coffee filters or really tight cotton about the same size can pre-filter dirty water from solids, of course, it does depend on what containers you happen to have with you. One metal canteen and dirty water is going in, two canteens (or canteen and cup) and one can hold the dirty water and the other container hold the clean filtered water. I like to carry clear 20"x22" kitchen garbage bags, they weigh almost nothing, come folded very small, and are handy for putting gear in during an unexpected down pour. I carry these bags even in the city. I don't go out without whistle, mirror, shelter material, water and fire material. If you have to spend the night, keep dry, keep warm, keep hydrated.

Hi there and thanks for adding your thoughts. I'm going to look up the SOL sheets, mylar does rip over time and anything that does an equal or better job is worth checking out. Thanks for that. You've got a great way to filter debris and dirt out of your water, I always still feel that boiling is best to get rid of the viruses and bacteria after filtering. I totally agree with you on the items you carry, along with a knife. C

@@LiveReady Hello again from england.. Another Great video ,I particularly love your great little dog . You're obviously very knowledgeable. I dunno if you're bothered about the toxicity of aluminium eating ,drinking and cooking vessels . I've removed all aluminium vessels and replaced them with stainless steel . Another advantage of the stainless steel ,British army ,58 pattern , bcb crusader canteen cup over any aluminium one, is that it can be used to produce char cloth or char material when placed upside down in a camp fire with the material you intend to char inside it ... A campfire can reach up to 900 degrees celcius and aluminium melts at 660 degrees . This means the aluminium canteen cup is hugely inferior to a stainless steel one. I personally dislike the silky pocketboy saws .I love my bahco laplander ,they're just way more durable . Your knowledge and expertise on multi environment survival techniques is very impressive. I do think you should treat yourself to some better quality kit . The sawyer mini water filter could be replaced with a grayl geopress and a "drinksafe systems uk" "waterstraw" As a backup. They're both far superior to the sawyer as they remove chemicals, Heavy metals ,viruses and odours aswell as the bacteria and parasites that the sawyer removes . Also ,a much heavier duty reflective / mylar sheet ,maybe the sol ??... You've got all the knowledge and skills in abundance ,you've earned the gucci kit ..lol. Thanks again .

@@davidjacobs828 Hey David! Thanks for your suggestions they're all valid points! I would love to replace all my kit but at the same time I don't mind it. Anodized aluminium doesnt 'leech' into food as the aluminium products of years before did. I'm not concerned about it but I do think your stainless steel is better. The disadvantage of a stainless steel cup is that I can't make a field compass in it as it has magnetic properties. I completely agree with you on the Grayl, expensive as it is it's much superior to most other water filtration systems. I've actually done a dedicated video on water filtration systems comparing Grayl, Sawyer mini and Lifestraw. All things considered I am happy to share my budget kit because that's what most people are able to acquire, I don't want people to feel that they absolutely have to have the best gear or nothing. There is merit in keeping the old school lensatic compass if you have it 😉 But as we go along we replace all the old stuff with better. Thanks again for your comment and for supporting the channel. I gotta say I am proud of you using Sawyer, I found it to be brilliant and I don't know why people talk bad on their bags, I have small on you got with plus 2x 2L bags, one always for dirty water and small one and 2l one for clean water. Also everything less in a video is really useful and multifunctional! I have Silky Big Boy Outback edition, was really thinking a lot getting big one instead of small one. I use Esse 4, Böcker for all arounds and I have custom scandi from Norway, didn't pay for it, was a present. But I relly on Esse 4 as I don't carry an axe at all. Ikea ziplocs are a must, 10cm long ferro rod , simple compass, and I use Aquaquest defender as a shelter. 1st aid has medicines, vitamins and penicilin and amoxicilin, also stuff for my dog, and siringe for deep cleaning nasty cuts and trauma band aid with tournequite (ming my English 😂 second language). I also have fishing gear and small rod. MSR pocket rocket 2, gas and Trangia. I have Croatian scent hound (Posavski gonič) our local breed, brilliant dogs, while mine is the best girl in the world hahah And also, always, New Testament with Psalms as well! I just can't imagine a day without praising Lord and at least praying Veni Sancto Spiritus or Psalms. Nothing more special then waking up and giving a praise to God while waiting for that coffee to be done. Moral +145 plus coffe +70 😂

Always delimb the other way around. If you try to chop the branch off, from top to bottom, the branch on the inside part of it's base, is hard like a rock (way more difficult and you risk to chip or roll the edge, sure you dull it faster and you lose more time and energy). That's why, you first cut off a tree, and then you delimb it. You've really uped your game lately girl! Loving what you do always pays of in the end, keep it up!!

If you have a spare mylar blanket, try to hang it diagonally from a tree with that cup on the ground under one of its corners. Every early morning, if there's enough humidity you will collect dew in that cup as drinking water. Take ziplock plastic bags and wrap it around bundles of leaves to collect water the same way (precipitation method) in the mornings. Even if you are in an arid area with dry weather, but if you're near a stream or lake, area closest to the water source will have some humidity to it. In a pinch, that collected water will help a lot.

Hi just started watching your videos. Really nice to see someone in SA posting these kinds of videos. I’ve recently upgraded my knife to the cold steel SRK, I’m looking forward to seeing how it does. One thing I keep in my fire kit that I love using to start fires is some cotton wool with vaseline (keep some vaseline with a few cotton balls in a small ziplock bag and when you need it just pull one out, separate it and boom it takes a spark real well.) I also have the magnesium bar with the ferro rod that seems to work well. Would you ever consider doing a series of videos in the highveld at all? Keep up the great videos 😊👍🏼

Whichever setup you choose, consider bringing a small sharpening stone. A small plastic trowel or emergency shovel is nice especially in areas where snow may be encountered.

Hi Clarise .. 👍 .. valuable info .. thanks for sharing. 'Survival Gear / EDC'. What should be taken with will vary, inter alia, according to when, where and for how long. Often a prime consideration being not what to include in the pack but rather what to leave out. Dave Canterbury's 5 / 10 C's go a long way to acting as a guide in this regard. A Compass. Considering it's weight against its possible 'added value', should always go with .. even if only used to entertain oneself / brush up on navigation. A secret in not getting lost is to know, firstly 'where you are' before you leave .. 'where you are going' .. and what (major features .. sea, river, forest, paths / roads, etc) lie to the NSEW with accompanying approximate distances. Energy 'PVM' Bars ('Tarzan Bars' in the Army 😊) are an 'always' in my kit .. even if only for the psychological boost they give me, knowing that, if necessary, I have something to munch on whilst mulling over what to do next 😏. Take care .. Tommy

Hi Gregory, thanks for your comment. I've said the same thing about a Mora companion (still an awesome knife) which has a rat tail tang. However to my knowledge both the 1219c USMC Ka-Bar and the BK62 are full tang knives, not rat tail tangs. Are you referring to a different knife which has a rat tail tang? C

@Gregory McKoy Hi Gregory, the Ka-bar 1219c knife that I have in this video is a full tang knife (according to all sources that I can find) which means that the stock metal runs all the way through the handle. A rat tail tang isn't a full tang, it tapers towards the end and usually only runs about three quarters of the way through the handle. I'm not sure what you mean by 'full rat tang'? Which traditional fighting knife are you referring to as there are quite a few, but if you have a product code I'll look it up? Batoning should definitely be done with care, I have a dedicated video on batoning to ensure that one takes all the knife's specs and capabilities into consideration when you baton. @@LiveReady you are correct that it is a full tang by definition of fully protruding through the handle. But, most people still consider it in the rat tang family due to it tapering and not being as thick as as full tang that fills the handle and grip area.

I agree with your advice except for your canteen bottle set. I think that a Stainless-Steel Canteen Water Bottle set is much better than a plastic or Aluminum set. A stainless-Steel bottle holds 1,2 L and the cup holds is 800 ml much bigger. Then, the Goetland and the Cyberone brands are cheaper and shining. It is great for signaling for help if you forgot your signaling mirror.

Hi Nick, I like your idea of using your canteen to signal for help. You do however get aluminium canteens in different sizes so if one would like a bigger or smaller size it just takes a bit of shopping around on Amazon. The advantage that the aluminium canteen and cup has is that it has no magnetic properties. I can magnetize a needle and use my canteen cup to build a field compass, which one wouldn't be able to do with a stainless steel canteen cup as it would interfere with the compass needle. At the end of the day it boils down to knowing the gear you have, if you understand how it works and you like it then you're sorted! Thanks for sharing your comment. C

I agree. You are right aluminum is not my sort. Why use a magnetized needle? I don't know how it works down under (the Southern Hemisphere) but, here in Canada, the sun rises in the East; it set in the West; at noon, it's in the South; behind you, it's North. It's that easy to find your Cardinal Points. And there's other ways to magnetize a needle. Love your videos. I have been sharing your videos to my non-bushcraft friends. Is that OK?. I'm a horrible teacher. :-)

For home defense there is no better option than a Rapid Fire Tactical Crossbow (besides a firearm of course) even with just the field tip bolts they are more than capable of being a viable home defense tool, no other crossbow type is good for home defense unless you have one attacker/intruder ONLY and you already have the crossbow in a cocked state and you know that you won't miss wen you pull the trigger, you also need to be sure the first shot is going to mortally wound the attacker/intruder because that one shot is all you have, compare that to being able to take 7 accurate potentially lethal shots in under 20 seconds with a Rapid Fire Tactical Crossbow. let's talk about survival quickly, a self cocking 80lbs crossbow is perfectly capable of effectively and ethically hunting small to medium game at reasonable distances. And there is no way that you are going to be hunting big game in a survival or bug out situation or any other SHTF scenario. Plus it's compact and easy to maneuver with. In any place where firearms are restricted or difficult to get a self cocking 80 lbs crossbow with a magazine system is the only and most logical home defense option. Would you use a knife do defend your self? Well now you have the ability to stab with greater force than you can generate with your arms and a knife, and it's from a distance too, if a person cannot see the value of a system like that for home defense then that person is mentally deficient. Have a look on my channel for my Rapid Fire magazine system coupled with the Tactical Crossbow MK TCS2 (Alligator) Affordable, reliable and effective. I have sent literally thousands of shots through my system without error or failure. 15 metre shooting in a awkward crouched position and shooting left-handed kzread.info/dash/bejne/nHad1dSbZLa6fMo.html Speed demonstration (you can go faster) kzread.info/dash/bejne/g4GWw7WIitbMlLQ.html

Those are super useful items. I'd definitely recommend keeping them in your bag as they're hard to replicate in the wild. I've only got the bare minimum here, basically if I could pack only ten gear items this would be it. You're right about the socks though, one needs to be dressed properly for the outdoors and that would include a decent waterproof and baselayer. I love wool socks😍 Thinking about it now though, I've seen Ray Mears show how the Apache warriors used the end thorn of an agave cactus to sow their gear. It's worth looking it up as it comes with the 'thread' already attached. C
