It was very interesting that you used even larger needles than recommended. I wondered how your neckline came out so wide. I want a wider neckline than the 26" suggested in the pattern but not quite as wide as yours. I'm going for a cast on 10 sts wider than suggested.

Beautiful sweater.

I made my first one with Berroco Remix Lite and a strand of mohair ( copying Little Big Knits example) and I love it! I used a 5 mm needle and it’s not so oversized now. I love it though and I’m going to make my next one with black Remix without mohair. I love that Quechua yarn too I only have 3 skeins left - 2 in rust and 1 in mustard colour.

Hello! I’m just finishing a Ranunculus. I used Knit Picks twill in the colourway Black Cherry Heather held with Silk Mohair Aire in the colourway Plum. I had a bit of trouble with the pattern especially in the armholes. I intend to finish them in an i-cord.

All the information was appreciated especially since I can’t locate mohair easily and would like to use some DK weight I already have. You have explained all the options so clearly I now feel able to embark! Love your style of podcasting, your warm and friendly smile and hearing honest accounts of your projects.

Hi Jackie - for mohair, try Haus of Yarn in Nashville (online sales). I just ordered a mohair from them that comes in 50 colors! Plus, they are very nice and will help/verify your mohair color choice with your main colorway. Good luck!

This was really helpful thank you. I have a lot of trouble finding patterns that will fit me well, and that aren't too difficult. Without looking at the pattern it's very difficult to tell if it will work for me and/or which problems I'll encounter. This helped me decide to buy the pattern and try it out, so thanks :)

Have fun with the ranunculus! Just a heads up, the yarn I used in this version is discontinued. However, I’ve noticed more and more similar blends out there. I love that yak and other animal fibres are becoming more popular.

Hi! I just stumbled upon your channel, and coincidentally I am knitting my 2nd and 3rd Ranunculus! The first I knit with fingering weight cashmere and wool and it’s dreamy! I am now knitting one with Madeline Tosh light fingering, it’s coming out very Lacey and light, perfect for summer. My third I am knitting with a pink bamboo, hope that looks ok, we will see. Anyway, love your channel and love your sweater!

I just bought the pattern and it’s been revised Feb 2022 and it’s not a one size now. I went with size one and it definitely didn’t have the positive ease I expected next time I’m going for the size 3

The lace pattern of the yoke is really beautiful! The yoke sweaters I did for myself, I wonder if I should make next time less stitches for the back, as it is most often much too wide, while the front is okay..hm.... .

Hm indeed. I usually find that yoke designs call for an almost even number of stitches on the front and back, with maybe a few extra on the front or back, depending on the design or size. We all have differently shaped bodies, so it makes sense that this type of design wouldn’t necessarily work for everyone. I would say for larger bust sizes, but maybe for those who might also have narrow shoulders or a narrow waist, you’re idea to have a few less stitches on the back would make perfect sense. If you try this modification, let us know how it goes!

@@songbirdsadeknits Thanks for your detailed answer Mercedes. I have got really broad shoulders and nearly even. So is my back, as if I had been a professional swimmer. My bust size is quite enough, not little. That's why I don't understand, why these yoke constructions don't fit me. I'll just try and modify my next sweater, minimizing the back and will see what it looks like. Yes, I' ll let you know. Thank you!

Hi Wendy. Good question. I think the ranunculus would look lovely in cotton, and it would make for a perfect summer garment. The only thing I’ll mention is that cotton can be hard to knit with, especially as a new knitter. It Is unforgiving when it comes to revealing flaws, and maintain a steady tension with it can be difficult .I find that it’s important to use metal, uncoated needles when knitting with cotton otherwise your stitches can get very tight.

Thank you for this helpful video! I’m ready to knit my first ranunculus. I am usually a gauge swatcher but I don’t know how to know if I “like the fabric” when it’s such a loose stitch or if it will look sloppy and unprofessional. Your comments at the end were insightful but I don’t want to have to frog it, especially if my yarn includes mohair.

Good luck to you! The nice thing about this sweater is that even if you just use the recommended needle and follow the pattern for an oversized fit, it should turn out wearable even if your gauge is off a bit.

Hi! I just found your great video about the Renunculus sweater and it’s in my list of patterns to try. My question is one that I think is not answered in the pattern. It says to use a #10 circular needle but does not give a length for the needle. What did you use, and did you use a shorter one to start out with at the neck, or is one length needle ok for the entire project. I plan on doing the short sleeves with the wider neck.

Hello! I think I used 40” circulars for the yoke and body. And shorter ones for the neckline. I’m usually not too fussy about the length that I use. When in doubt, I err on the side of a bit shorter than what the circumference of the sweater is intended to be.

Very late to the party. On my second one, and I've knit three, I made more short rows in the back. Instead of 4 or 5 and turn, I knit 3 or 4. Made it not droop in the back.

I had same problem with ranunculus re: GSR. It’s just a tad off and i can feel it in neck. Mine is completed except for blocking so I’m debating if neckline surgery is the best chance. I’m glad you talked about this because I was wondering how is this just me…I know I followed each row and count always ended up spot on. 🤔

Ya! So curious. Your the only person I’ve heard from with this issue too. On my second ranunculus I actually moved the beginning of round marker after knitting the lace yoke. I just moved it whichever way it looked like it needed to go, about six stitches or so. Completely fixed the problem! I talk about it in one of my other videos.

HI - I JUST FOUND YOU AND YOUR RANUNCULUS IS BEAUTIFUL! I'm petite, and you look quite slender also .. now I never understand how anyone is getting a more 'fitted' garment using heavier weight yarn and a size 10 needle!! Did you make the size 1- but isn't that like 46" at the bust?? How wide is your garment? I'm petrified to end up with basically a bedspread! LOVE YOUR WORK - and will be binge watching for sure! Hi Barbara! Nice to ‘meet’ you. And thank you for your comment. Well, I will say that my ranunculus is not fitted at all. I actually made my very first ranunculus using the recommended needle size and it did end up on the smaller side which I didn’t think looked very flattering. So I went up a full needle size (7mm). I’m a very tight knitter (English style). If you’re going to knit the ranunculus and don’t want it to be huge, I would suggest using the smaller /higher neck line option. In my video I’m wearing the wide neck option, but I’ve recently frogged the entire project and knit something else because I did not like the wide neck. I have several other ranunculus sweaters all with the smaller neckline and I find that they fit much nicer. And yes I made the ‘one size’ option, so not the option for larger bust. It’s meant to fit loosely, and I think it looks good over a dress or over high waisted skirts or pants. Happy knitting to you!

Hello! I knit size 3, the original size before pattern included multiple sizes (used to be one size). I have a 36” bust. The fit is very roomy, but it works, partly because the fabric is so light.

I use size 7mm because 6mm gives me too tight of a gauge. 7mm gives me closer to correct gauge. I assure you there is lots of positive ease it just sits well because of the drape of the fabric.

Hi Mercedes. I am doing my first shortsleeved Ranunculus. I am a bit confused with separating the sleeves from the body. Do I do round 1 and 2 twice? Do I bind off one sleeve, knit to the next sleeve, then bind off then knit to start of round.?

If I understand your question correctly, I think the pattern calls for you to bind off each sleeve as you come to it in that round. You’ll end up with a really short sleeve cap. And a rolled him on each of the sleeves. Do note though that my version is different. I held each sleeve on scrap yarn, knit the body, then picked up the sleeve stitches and added ribbing to finish them off.

Great job and love the color. Can I ask what size you made? Sorry if you had that info in your video, I missed it.

Hi Heidi. The ranunculus is a ‘one size’ pattern. I think there are modifications for a larger bust if needed. I found I did need to go up a full millimetre in my needle size to get something like the correct gauge, as my first version knit with the recommended needle was too small and not the oversized look that it’s meant to be.

Hi Ginna. I would say that the Ranunculus is unfortunately not beginner friendly. It isn’t a difficult knit at all, but it does feature a number of techniques that I think you’d need an ‘intermediate’ skill level to execute. Also, as it is knit at a large open gauge, you’d have to have a good sense of your stitches to knit this with confidence, as it’s pretty hard to ‘read’ your knitting / see your stitches with this one. But, ‘beginner’ means something different to each person, and many beginners are able to grasp knitting concepts beyond their experience. And, the pattern is well written and clear, even if some of the techniques seem confusing at first. I’d say if you’ve done some lace and short rows before, then you could give this a go. Ley us know what you decide!

@@ginnaricci4547 the wide neck version that I made uses a cast on very similar to long-tail (it’s just looser to allow for an open neck), so that was easy enough to do.

My friend and I are struggling to get that wide neck. Did blocking help it get that wide? I've knit it per pattern instructions for the wide neck I just haven't blocked it. First time using a mohair. On my second one I've cast on 90 sts and ribbed on the bigger needle size. Lol hopefully that wasn't an overkill. I'm typing this as you finished talking about the needle size. Maybe there is hope but if you have any more wisdom to add to this that would be great!

Hello! I unfortunately cannot recall the process of knitting the wider neck - now that I’ve made this pattern several times I prefer the narrow neck version and always make that one. I know with the narrow neck version it looks too small until you’ve knit well into the body, or blocked it. So perhaps that is also the case with the wide neck. I think because there are so few stitches to cast on, it’s important to use the recommended cast on method in the pattern. A more traditional cast on won’t have the right amount of slack. Finally, I find because the gauge is so loose and because I am a tight knitter, I always have to go up a full millimetre in needle size for this and other similar patterns. Don’t know if any of this is helpful, but I wish you luck!

i tried to cast on according to the guage and my small neckline is tiny! its 20" around. did you face any challenges during this? it seems that you used a dk weight but you did the wide neck. i checked ravelry patterns and it seems some others had this same issue with the 60 stitch cast on. have you made the other one yet?

Hi Claudia. Hmm I cannot recall. I am pretty sure though that the neckline looks small until the ribbing is complete. Once you get past that, the stitches settle and the neckline opens up. So if you haven’t knit the ribbing yet, I’d suggest trying it to see what happens to the cast-on.

@@songbirdsadeknits i think i was just on too small of a set of needles haha, i was nervous to work more of it in case i had made a mistake since i was missing 6 inches in measurement, but i remembered it said something about wet blocking which definitely increases size a bit. thank you for your response!!!!

Nope, I did the twisted loop cast on called for in the pattern for wide neck version. It’s similar to the long-tail CO. The pattern contains a link to a helpful video tutorial
