Getting to this a year late, but who knows? 1 inch punch is a training tool, not something you use in a fight. It's about training your body to deliver maximum power over the shortest distance. Ideally, you should be able to do it with any part of your body (shoulder, back, hip, butt, whatever) and at no range. Bruce was awesome, but never went deep enough to learn that. Look up a dude named Chen Bu if you want to see some good demonstrations of inch power type stuff. You'll like him, Seth. He's chubby. And surprising.

Boxer here. I would have put only the jab as S tier and the cross and hook as A tier just to distinguish how important the jab is. You can have not the best cross or hook and be okay but you ain't got no jab you ain't going nowhere in boxing, generally speaking. The rest of the list is nothing I have an opinion on as they either aren't punches thrown in boxing or I, for the most part, agree with their rankings in your list.

Agree 100% with this It's your most thrown punch, it's your fastest punch, your longest punch, it sets up every other punch by landing or even just obscuring their vision if you smother them with it, you can throw it while moving in any direction, you can condition people with a soft jab and when you need to hit them with a hard one they wont expect it- like.. it's not even close. it NEEDS to be in its own tier above the rest.

Jabs don't work as well in MMA. Because u have to plant your lead leg to jab, that's asking to get your lead leg low kicked. But still a great punch. So they should all be in the same tier.

A jab is used to test your opponent's defenses, measure the distance to your opponent, stop your opponent's movement towards you and also as an offensive punch when used with a step. A fighter who knows how to jab properly would be a formidable opponent. In my opinion the jab is the best punch you can learn.

I think putting the one-inch punch in F tier as it's generally presented is perfectly reasonable. My understanding of it is that it was never meant as a combative technique per se, but rather as a demonstration or exercise to remind students of proper form. If I'm not mistaken, one of Icy Mike's collabs with Sergio had the latter demonstrating the practical application of the one-inch punch and it wasn't like what people actually picture when it's done in demos. I don't recall the specifics, unfortunately.

I'd love to see you do a tier list where you give your opinion on the material Icy Mike covered in "Palm Strikes, Karate Chops, and Spinning Stuff for Self Defense?". Basically he discussed his feelings on all of the "miscellaneous" or non-punching hand strikes in martial arts: palm strikes, ridge hands, knife hands, etc. He also covered the backfist and hammerfist, but you already have those here of course. I feel like maybe you might have different opinions on some of those strikes given your background? Also, any chance of a discussion of the different kinds of elbows? For instance: cutting vs. smashing, lead elbow "stabs", 12-6, etc. Love your content as always. Keep it coming!

Hard to argue with the list here. the hook can be devastating, the jab allows one to set pace, etc. As a taller longer guy myself the bolo has the ability to close. Nothing to pick with. And I'm happy you included the shovel hook, it can be nasty. It's versatile, and works as both an entry and an exit in clinch work (MT), when following an appropriate combo and feints. You can sort of disguise it. Great video.
