Great job but these tournaments look terrible. Tarp floors and foam edges for a dohyō is truly disgraces the art of Sumo.

It’s amateur, there’s no market for a large paid audience. Sumo in Japan is a financial powerhouse. The equivalent here would be the NFL with their huge stadiums. Simply put, nobody’s got the money to build clay dohyos at every small venue that we host at lmao

One thing i dont like is this notion that "only self defense works on the street". I hear it constantly from self defense guys. That somehow knowing how to fight other fighters makes me worse in fighting non fighters. Its the dumbest thing 🙄. Oh so my speed, power, accuracy, timing, defense, general athleticism, and time on the mat means nothing? So i just dont necissarily see the point of self defense centered martial art. Why train to deal with people who dont know what they are doing? I fight very talented people and i occasionally mess around fighting people who are completely clueless. I have to say fighting clueless people, many times they are far bigger than me, is alot like play fighting with my 4yo daughter. I have to put so much effort and strategy into making sure they dont hurt themselves and pass up opportunities where i could end the fight imediately because defense is foreign concepts to them. It has historically been zero issue(for me at least) to switch gears from play, to sparring, to hard sparring, to real fights(which real fights i avoid as much as possible). I guess my thing is self defense isnt worthless, but i dont like how self defense systems or teachers will claim how knowing boxing, judo, mma, bjj, etc is completely worthless on the street. Thats just a load of 💩.

I trained a little wing chun a while ago and sparred with them as a tkd black belt. I noticed it's really easy to either get too focused on the stance and specifics that I would become rigid and other times it could devolve into patty cake when I or someone else wasn't taking the striking seriously. But even today I use a lot of the basics and methods I learned and I do think it deserves more respect in the modern mma world.

And this is the one thing I hate about tae kwon do and it doesn’t have to be this way, but they usually suck at their hands. What does it take to learn basic boxing it’s four punches jab cross hook, uppercut that’s it combined with the kicking. You’ve got quite an arsenal, but they were so much on their kickthat when you close on them game is over it’s ridiculous and unnecessary

There is soemthing berserk about just defending your head and fighting. I can tell that I do not recall someone trying liver shot me, they aim for head most time, just guard your head and you will be fine for most situations. But if you will go against trained person, that can change, but strange thing that trained persons usually won't attack that offten. If I am in a figth I would first go for legs with leg kick to test and see who I fight. Knuckle to the head can mess your knuckle bad and elbows are good way to defend. You just need to hit elbow once and you will not be using that fist for long time.

This guard is exactly what we were taught in the Australian army. They called it the shell position, with forearms and elbows guarding the face, fingers on the head. The rest was largely BJJ type stuff with basic strikes.

The cardio fitness bag is still a good bag! Just put weight plates on it, so it doesn't move. You can still work on timing, slipping, Bob and weave, and moving around the bag and you'll still get a good workout. It may not spring too fast, but it's not slow either. To me it's in between the cobra and reflex bag and it moves good enough. So, I still recommend it in my opinion.
