I agree that would be a great idea. I have a couple posters from the Bond movies including On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and The Living Daylights. I know the next one I want to buy is Casino Royale, but I can’t decide if I want the poster where Vesper Lynd is in the background or if I want the one where the Casino is within the figure of a woman.

I worked on some of these games including FRWL. FRWL launched about a week before the Xbox 360 and it was hard to get any press about the game because they were covering the launch of the "next generation". EA decided not to port it to the 360 even though we did get it running on the new platforms. EON was REALLY screwed over by EA's marketing. 1) They insisted at the last minute we add multiplayer (but just for the PS2- which made no sense since it was doing shit numbers compared to Xbox Live) so the game missed Christmas. EA marketing told us we had to have multiplayer or we wouldn't be competitive with the (non-existent) Starcraft Ghost (but marketing was convinced it was launching soon!). 2) When EON did launch in February, they did a press release on THE SAME DAY announcing "Coming Soon: Goldeneye 2". What morons! They effectively said "Don't buy this piece of shit. The game you REALLY want will be here shortly." BTW, as someone whose seen the real sales figures of many games, VGChartz is pure guesswork and the people who run the site have admitted as much. I've seen their numbers be off by 10X in either direction. So anytime you read "according to VGChartz" just stop reading right there.

@@jamesatkinsonja Yes. :-) There was a saying in our group, "the only thing worse than getting no attention from marketing is getting a lot of attention from marketing". A lot of time was wasted adding features or chasing ideas that no one except marketing wanted just so they could have a checkbox for a press release. I pointed out to our boss once, "how come our company's greatest successes always include the phrase 'And everyone in marketing was against the game'?".

If I remember right, Rare Replay has an interview with the GoldenEye dev team and they said sales peaked in the third year after the game launched. It was unattainable the Christmas period it was released because they hadn’t expected it to be so popular, sold even more the next Christmas and then even more the year after that. It was the killer app, on a console centred around couch multiplayer, for a long, long time.

Very interesting video! Before this vid, I wouldn’t have thought Agent Under Fire was the best-selling 6th Gen Bond game. I would’ve said Nightfire or Everything or Nothing. After all, like you said, they were the ones with Pierce Brosnan’s mug on the cover. Maybe people didn’t realise AUF was totally Broz-free until they bought the game and started playing it, or maybe Andrew Bicknell is far more popular than I ever thought... Flash back to 2001: “Hey, you’ll never guess who played James Bond in the new game! Only Andrew blooming Bickwell!” “Andy Bicks?! Prince John from The New Adventures of Robin Hood?!” “The one and only!” “No way!” “It’s true!” “Oh man, I have got to play this!” A year later... “The new Bond game’s out!” “Wait, who’s this git on the cover?” “Pierce who? Where’s our boy Bicks?” “They replaced Andrew Bicknell? This is an outrage!” “Screw this, they’ll never top Bicknell, he was the best Bond ever. If they’re just gonna replace him with any old prat, then I’m not playing.”

  • @calvindyson

Andrew Bicknell FTW!! Glad you liked the video, BenCol and you raise a really interesting point... how much does it really matter if a cinematic Bond lends his likeness to a game? Clearly it didn’t do FRWL any favours and with AUF selling SO WELL, is it okay to just have any blokes face plastered on Bond? I can’t say I’ve ever minded too much myself. There’s certain credibility that comes with having Brosnan, Craig etc represented in the games but maybe not to important for first person shooters where you rarely see the character!

I do think the reason why the N64 version of TWINE did so much better was because, compared to the PS1 especially, the N64's library was pretty small and new releases by late 2000 were pretty thin on the ground (even in the US where the system was actually something resembling a success!). So basically on N64 it was a well reviewed and sought after title, while on PS1 it was just another bond game. Not to mention this was also the year the PS2 was launched just before xmas that year, the gamecube and xbox was almost another year away or even longer if you lived in europe!

I think From Russia with Love comes down to a fatigue in the Bond license in gaming, there had been a lot of Bond games released during the 6th generation. I agree with what you say about customers being content enough with the Bond games they already had. I think another factor was licensed games had started to drop in popularity around this point, gaming was becoming more focussed on its own IP’s. EA actually moved away from licensed games soon after this point. By the end of the 7th generation licensed games were out of fashion, with the 8th generation abandoning them completely.

To put the sales figure of GoldenEye 007 in perspective, that means that about 25% of people who owned a N64 owned GoldenEye. It was even the 3rd best selling game on the system (only Mario Kart 64 and Super Mario 64 beat it). Regarding the low sales of From Russia with Love, it was actually one of the reasons EA terminated the Bond license early and caused them to scrap a Casino Royale game they had in development. While I like the game, it's also not too odd why it didn't have huge sales numbers, as it mainly appealed to Bond-fans, while the mish-mash of modern day stars clashed quite a bit with it. Plus, like you say, it came out late in these consoles lifespan on consoles that were already very saturated with Bond games, as the Bond games had turned into an annual series by that point.

9:32 Oh it was worse than that. Not only did Blood Stone & GoldenEye Wii launch on the same day, they launched only a couple of days (7-4 depending on region) before Call of Duty: Black Ops. Which, wouldn’t you know, was also published by Activision, in fact it’s their flagship series, and that particular COD would go on to break various sales records and become the 29th best selling video game of all time. So, yeah, not only was Blood Stone overshadowed by GoldenEye, both were overshadowed by one of the most anticipated games of the year. So no wonder it didn’t sell very well - people looking for a shooter game in November 2010 probably weren’t looking at Bond. Which raises the question: why did Activision clump all the releases so tightly together? I can understand releasing games in November to boost sales in the run up to Christmas, but still. Poor Blood Stone never had a chance.

  • @BenCol

    @BenCol

Part Two: One year later, GoldenEye Reloaded on PS3 and Xbox 360 went up against COD: Modern Warfare 3, which broke many of the records COD: Black Ops broke the year before and ended up the 28th best selling video game of all time (just 162,500 copies short of overtaking the 27th best selling video game: Super Mario World). So it seems Activision had a habit of placing Bond up against their biggest title. I understand that time of the year in the run-up to Christmas is the best time to sell games, but seriously, did Activision not think having two shooter games released so close together would cannibalise sales?

There’s a case that although practically identical in level design, the Wii version of ‘Goldeneye 007’ wiimote and nunchuck controls (in my opinion the best FPS on Wii to make use of these controls) makes it stand out enough from the ‘Reloded’ versions to be counted separately. Another case is the Wii version of QofS which from what I heard from the time was a complete mess in comparison to the 360 and PS3 versions (though can’t verify this myself as have only played the 360 version).

2:46 The reason why it out was because even in 2008 the PS2 and Wii were selling like hot cakes. The Wii was never on par with PS3 or Xbox 360. It's essentially a marginally upgraded GameCube with motion control, so specs wise it's more on par with the PS2. With the PS2 and Wii being the best selling consoles at the time, they had to release a port of Quantum of Solace on them.

So in other words Calvin went down a rabbit hole and this is why this video exists. Also, 007 Legends was probably also hurt by the movies they decided to cover. Die Another Day is one of the most critically panned movies in the entire series so it’s a mystery as to why they chose to cover it.

Thank you for this great video Calvin, really insightful. I think we could do full thesis on the lackluster sales performance of From Russia With Love. As an avid PS2 player in the 2000's and a fan of Bond, even I didn't purchase the game until the following year after release and that was only because of a friends recommendation. From Russia With Love is a fantastic game but I think third person shooters we sort of out of fashion in the mid 2000's and everyone wanted first person shooters. I think you are right regarding people been put of by a game based on an 'old' film from the 60's. All my colleague friend's believed that Pierce Brosnan was the only Bond and didn't highly rate the older films in the franchise. I also doubt it was on many children's wish lists, particularly after the disappointment of Goldeneye Rogue Agent. GoldenEye Rogue Agent was a massive disappointment especially after all the hype with marketing campaigns and double spreads in various gaming magazines. Arguably Golden Eye potentially ruined EA's run of successful Bond games. I think FRWL would have faired significantly better if it was directly released after Everything Or Nothing. That said, all long running gaming franchises become tired at some point, especially if there is a new release every year. It's unfortunate that FROL didn't reach the audience it maybe deserved. I think that was a problem with the Activision games. They were all average shooters made on a tight budget, but I think gamers were tired of 'basic' first person shooters at this point in time and Blood Stone was over shadowed by the GoldEye Wii cash in. Activision's Bond titles didn't really do anything innovative and as a result were fairly bland experiences with sales gradually falling release after release. I'm looking forward to the new 007 game project by the Hitman Studio. Hitman is a prime example of a game franchise that outstayed it's welcome and became unpopular to some extent. After a short break and a franchise reset, the new Hitman games were a breath of fresh air. Thanks to fantastic games like Uncharted, The Last of Us and the new Tombraider Trilogy, third person games are cool once again. I for one cannot wait for the next chapter of Bond games.

The mid and then late 2000's saw a pretty big revival of third person shooters though with Resident Evil 4, Gears of War and Uncharted and third person shooters went on to become quite big in the 7th gen. With the From Russia With Love game I think you're right, it's more a case of that being a game based on a much older film than things that were popular at the time like Nightfire, Everything or Nothing and the more action oriented Bond games of the first half of the 6th gen. Despite owning Nightfire and EON I didn't buy FRWL when I really should've done. The fact it also came out after Goldeneye Rogue Agent didn't help.

The sales of the 360/PS3 Bonds are pretty good indicators of why the current game drought happened. Nowadays, big AAA games are considered failures if they don't sell 5+ million units or more, and Blood Stone, Legends and Reloaded didn't even come close to that.

The 360 version of Quantum of Solace probably outsold the PS3 version because in 2008 the PS3 had not yet caught up to the 360 sales wise. The 360 launched about a year earlier than the PS3 and had the healthier and more diverse library of games for a while. I remember selling mine after less than a year after I had finished Metal Gear Solid 4 a couple of times to get a 360 instead and I wouldn't re-acquire a PS3 until around 2012. The sheer weight of the name Playstation as well as all the support from Japanese developers made it surpass the 360 eventually though.

I picked up the FPS Quantum of Solace in a bargain bin and was surprised by it's quality. The way I remember the From Russia With Love game is that it had nice box art, but the game it self looked like it was just more of the same that had come out around that time, these third person Bond games where good, but good in a very okay kind of way, I think they needed to be more "mature" aka. juvenile with violent action, in stead of feeling like a well crafted kids toy. At the time I was enjoying the crazy Time Splitters games.

I am not too surprised at the fact From Russia With Love underperformed. Given that the movie it is based on does not have the big action set pieces that Goldfinger, Thunderball and You Only Live Twice have and thus the video game had to be changed up to accommodate them. Also, I have a feeling that the James Bond brand did take a hit to a degree, with the release of Goldeneye: Rogue Agent. I recall the reviews for it being pretty average when compared to say Grand Theft Auto or another video game where you play as a criminal. Also, FRWL was released in November which is a pretty competitive month for video games to make a profit given that many consumers are buying them for Christmas presents and there many so many titles to pick from. That said I enjoyed it for what it was. Even after I beat the game, I still came back to play both story mode and the four bonus stages quite a bit.

Calvin, I think some of the sales are a matter of consoles rather than outright favoritism. I had an N64 starting in 1998 - Goldeneye was my first - so that affected what my parents bought for me. For instance my preference is for The World is Not Enough on that console just because that was what was available to me.

I have two questions for you Calvin: 1) For the setting for the new James Bond game. Do you think this game need to be set in the Cold War 1950's-1960's like the Ian Fleming books or do you want it to be set in the 21st Century? 2) I know there is no way to bring back Christopher Lee Francisco Scaramanga due to his death, but I think David Bateson (a.k.a. the Face and voice of Agent 47 in the Hitman games) would be perfect to play the role Francisco Scaramanga if he is going to be in the new James Bond game. Do you picture Agent 47 voice and likeness as Francisco Scaramanga?

I wonder if the charts apply all the versions of the games and all regions to one, as some games have technically multiple versions on the same console (read: the SCES SLES whathaveyou product code with PS1 and PS2, as an example the European English version of TND, French version of TND and German version of TND are all technically their own games). Out of those retail games, I have 9 different retail releases of TND, 4 different retail releases of PS1 TWINE (surprised it didn't sell some more), 3 different retail releases of 007 Racing (surprised it didn't also sell some more), 2 retail releases of PS2 AUF, one retail release of PS2 NF and one for PS2 G:RE (can concur, this one somewhat sucked, first level is semi-cool though). (I also own 4 007 games as promotional discs. Also bunch of stuff related to TND.)

Well, to be fair on TWINE's sales, when you brought up that the PSOne version was more circulated, could that be that since you live in the UK? If I recall, Nintendo has historically STRUGGLED in the United Kingdom, with some exceptions (like the Wii and Switch). Only better than XBOX progress in Japan. Meanwhile, N64 did fairly well in the United States. Sure, lower than the PlayStation still. But I found many people in the States with a 64 or almost anything Nintendo pre-Wii, compared to the UK when I lived there for a little bit (and based on what other UK based gamers have said before then).

  • @BenCol

Yeah, it wasn’t until about 2003 that Nintendo actually opened a UK subsidiary to manage their releases. Throughout the N64 era they relied on a company called THE Games to handle UK distribution, and apparently they didn’t do the best job. But I think Nintendo had a lot of success with their handheld consoles in the UK, though that may be due to a the fact that there was very little competition.

BUt i did buy 007 legends and i didnt hate it for the most part i liked it, i just didnt finish it, so i cant wait what the hitman creators will do, i love the hitman games the new one was great never played but watched he full gameplay and it was great, can you review james bond inspired games, like i thought rockstar who does grand theft auto does bond pretty well, with the dlc of riding the lotus or jetpack, to riding and buying db5, you can weear a suit and do a mission like bond, and if they do it open world that woud be a kind of cool and different, can you review grand theft auto james bond scenes like one mission as well as the lotus and other stuff also easter eggs it will be great, and did you know the creators are centered in scottland, so they are british, if anything they should revive a sean connery bond games. Can you maybe review no time to die 1958 as well as no time to die 1984 or just the trailer maybe, they are both spy flicks so that is kind of crazy.

The fact that of all things Rogue Agent outsold FRWL is particularly baffling to me. I think I recall getting both around 2006 or so and now Rogue Agent just collects dust on my shelf. I wonder how the stats for the PSP version of FRWL fare on all of these. I recall unlike say, GBA and DS versions of various Bond games, PSP FRWL is actually a straight port of the console version. Tho given that the PSP wasn't nearly as popular as Nintendo's handhelds, I imagine it wouldn't have been much to boost it from it's current spot. I think another thing that probably boosted Rogue Agent was the fact it was one of the first console Bond games with online features from what I remember. EON did have online but given that game's lacking multiplayer in comparison to it's beefy main story, I imagine a fair few were interested in a more standard Bond FPS with online capabilities.
