Meanwhile, I was struggling not to feel nauseous. Yes, seeing chicken (mainly fried and rotisserie) for any length of time can make me feel nauseous. This is due to feeling sick many years ago, and the smell/thought of rotisserie chicken making that feeling worse. My brain made an involuntary association for me, and I do not appreciate it.

Whenever I fly, I try to connect into Charlotte, because the airport has 3 Bojangles locations. That’s a testament to how good Bojangles is. I tried the Borounds for breakfast last summer; they are melt in your mouth good. Bojangles also has the best breakfast biscuits anywhere.

In our area it’s best when it’s not breakfast time because they’ll make you wait 15minutes since they only make them during breakfast time but don’t mind making a fresh batch when asked.

The lesson in all these videos: always do your best cause you never know; a Southern man could be ranking it on the internet where the whole world can see it

I had that happen to me at the KFC here. Two days later I tried to order a roast beef sandwich from Arby's and they were out of roast beef. I asked the guy at Arby's if they had the same manager as KFC, because both places were out of what they were known for at 7:30 on a weekday night.

I would bet they had chicken but someone pulled the halon fire suppression system over the chicken fryers making them a safety hazard until the halon people came out and repressurized the halon system and a health hazard until the oil was replaced and all the halon dust was vacuumed up. 25 years ago I was on the window in the drive thru at McDonald's after an ass hat on working papers grabbed the red handle marked "Fire Suppression System Emergency Use Only" and pulled it as he asked "What does this do?" "That? When you pull that for no valid reason that gets you fired and earns you the immediate hatred of all of your former coworkers" was the manager on duty and within ear shots immediate reply.

@@goodvibes_alv I saw online this weekend that KFC did a chicken promotion at Christmas in Japan about 25 years ago, and it became such a big fad over there that now you have to order "KFC for Christmas" weeks in advance!

I grew up with Church's. The secret to getting good chicken from there, is go to a busy store. The chicken doesn't have time to sit under the lamps. And don't forget a cup of jalapenos, drizzle the juice over the chicken before you eat it. And I totally agree with your assessment of KFC. They don't know how to cut up a chicken right.

Sadly, not every Church's is created equal.

Kentucky Fried Chicken in the 1970s was great. The original was never crispy because it was pressure-cooked, but that skin and breading combination used to be delicioso! They even had pullybone pieces. These days I fry my own in an iron skillet.

"As I got older" -- no, as IT got older. I still remember when KFC was made to order when you ordered it. Sure it meant a 20 minute (or more) wait, but it was worth it every time. What they call KFC now is this limp, overcooked, sat under a heat-lamp for f*** knows how long garbage that doesn't even taste right. It is NOT the KFC of my childhood. Even the colour of the chicken itself is wrong and just seems... off. But they had to try and compete with fast food, and in the process destroyed everything that made so many of us love their food in the first place.

After previously working at Bojalgles in Jefferson, NC, I’m king of glad that I was on the winning team! I used to Always let it fry for and extra minute or two to get a little crispier, and drained it well!

First I must say how much I envy you for getting to do this. Second I must applaud your accuracy in your rankings, including acknowledging that although Church's is 3rd it's a darn good 3rd. Now I must point out the problem with this process: it seems you got the mild chicken at Popeyes, which is an abomination. Popeyes is a spicy chicken restaurant. Mild was not even on the original menu, and was only added later because some people are psychotic. The other side of this is that even if you get the spicy at a location outside of Louisiana it's still hit or miss. "Spicy" Popeyes from New Orleans (you should never have to specify spicy) is a huge cut above and beats Bojangles due to its perfect flavor, texture, and juiciness. Despite my obvious bias, though, otherwise I completely agree with your assessment of my favorite food. 🤜🏼🤛🏼

Church’s is really a hit or miss - the first time I went there, it was really good because it seemed that I got it straight out of the fryer. The following times I went, it felt like sometimes the fried chicken had been sitting around for a while and wasn’t as crispy. Got to get it when it’s fresh!

When I moved into the neighbourhood 15 years ago, I was delighted that there was a KFC just a block from the major intersection, which was about another block away from me, because that meant it was close by for the Tuesday special every week. What I would do is to purchase the special, then pay extra for an extra thigh. Eventually, I noticed that the pieces were getting smaller, and finally realized that what was going on was that the thighs were being cut in half, but still being advertised as full thighs. Luckily there was a Popeye's near me as well, but a bit of a further walk, like nearly two stoplights away. Their Tuesday special was also a leg and thigh, with sides costing less for the special, so I'd get a side of fries. Turns out that the cost of a leg and WHOLE thigh at Popeye's, with fries, ended up only costing me 40 cents more then what I had been paying at KFC for essentially the same thing. So now, every Tuesday, I will walk that extra distance to get Popeye's. (I really don't know what happened. It might have been a decision at the corporate level, or it might have been a decision made at that store. I DO know that for some time they had one server there who was so bad that the only reason I could think of as to why she still had her job was that she was married to the franchise owner.)

Sir, as someone who's moved around all over the South, I can confirm, your rankings are right on point. Bojangles, Popeye's, Church's, and f*** KFC. I actually had this conversation with a couple guys stocking at my grocery store just yesterday.

KFC depends on the restaurant though. I've ate at KFCs that I thought were delicious, and I've ate at ones I would never go back to! Lol

North Florida boy here ...I say North Florida as we all know South Florida is Yankee occupied ....Bojangles to me is by far the best FF fried chicken. Unfortunately the closest one to me is about 15 miles away via a high traffic road. Also Bojangles makes the best sausage biscuit I have ever eaten!!! I actually work at Bojangles if you do a review on Chicken Sandwiches I guarantee you Bojangles is in the Top 3 or is Number one. All of the chicken we serve is like a Cajun flavor to, the biscuits are always made fresh. I love to work in the biscuit area, and I make sure all the biscuits I make are fresh.

The nearest Bojangles is 7 hrs away in Mobile. Popeyes it is!

My favorite fast food chicken by a country mile (see what I did there?) is Krispy Krunchy Chicken. It's mainly sold in quick mart places attached to gas stations all over the U.S., but ... It is absolutely the best because they marinate it in seasoned buttermilk overnight before they batter and fry it up fresh. Incredible.

I mostly ate Lee's Famous Recipe (restaurant created by the Colonel's nephew) as a kid, because my town had it and not KFC, and was always disappointed when I had KFC because it wasn't as good.

KFC does NOT cook the chicken the same as they used to, and they do NOT use 11 herbs and spices anymore. The Colonel was upset about it after he left.

Also from Philly and you are so right. Chicken is done justice cause there is no time like Bo time. Pizza and sandwiches in the south is trash tho.

Bojangles used to have two flavors of fried chicken, southern and Cajun. Southern was amazing chicken with no spiciness whatsoever. Cajun was almost like eating hot wings. At some point, they just met in the middle and made nothing but mild spiced chicken. It's still good, but nothing like what it used to be. If you've never had southern chicken from Bojangles, you don't know what you're missing. With that being said, Bojangles is still the best in my book, and it's not just because of their fried chicken. Their breakfast menu sets them apart rivaling and outdoing all other fast-food chains. If fact, I bet they make more from breakfast items than anything else.

I used to get one Southern and one Cajun when they were available. I wish they would bring the Southern back.

Do a "revisionist" review of the church's biscuits up against the original biscuit ranking. Also, the difference between juiciness is about whether they brine the chicken or not. Everyone knows good fried chicken starts with the brine. Really enjoy your videos, the spy balloon episode had me rolling, keep up the good work

KFC went to hell after PepsiCo bought them out.

@@niteowl7710 I noticed a SIGNIFICANT downward shift in the quality, and consistency (by location) around the time Taco Bell, Pizza Hut parent company bought the brand. I do believe that was about the time they officially changed the branding from The Colonel's Kentucky Fried Chicken, to KFC. And not long after started to introduce things like "Grilled" and "Baked" options. Because they thought we weren't smart enough to know what the letters KFC meant. 🤦🏼 I miss KFC parfait buckets. They have never offered a dessert option that could even compete, since removing those from the menu. Growing up, my favorite was the Lemon Bucket, but also loved the Strawberry Bucket. My brother loved the Chocolate Mousse best. And my mom loved the Strawberry most, but also the Apple. (I found the apple to be tasteless, personally.) My dad was like me, but was also kind of a human garbage disposal, so he'd eat whatever was left, and do so with a smile on his face. 😇

Good to see I'm not the only one who noticed that. Tried to make fried chicken healthy and wrecked it in the process. I'm just glad we have a handful of Popeyes above the Yankee "line" as it were.

Several years back my family experienced a sad event. I was living in West Palm Beach and my sister and her family lived in Pensacola. Sister had a medical emergency and had to be life-flighted to Gainesville/Shands hospital. It was a sad hard time for all of us, which ended up in her passing several months later. But while we were hanging out in the ICU in Gainesville, they built a Bojangles just down the street. Not gonna say that made everything better (no where near, in fact) but it did bring us comfort that at the end of a long day of stressing and grief crying, we had Bojangles back in the hotel room and that was the best comfort we could have had at the time. THANK YOU FOR PICKING BOJANGLES. It's just something special. They just need to bring their selves out to California cause I miss it so much!!

Bravo on requiring the "bone in." I've used the same argument many times. KFC pressure cooks their chicken which might account for the juicy nature. Church's rips off the tender for sell separately. You can see a tremendous difference between Church's and Popeyes. Don't know if you are comparing Po Folks but they have pretty good chicken.

Popeyes spicy is actually their original and regular was added later. That was done in early years so it wasn't so hot for the wimps. Lol.😂

I prefer the mild because I like to taste the chicken as well. The spicy chicken is overwhelmed by the spices and the chicken flavor just disappears.

Here, we've got Heaven Sent fried chicken. Fucking bomb. Ezell's used to be great but then he left and started Heaven Sent.

The only issue is that you can't get Bojangles Chicken anywhere west of Tennessee. I'm a southern transplant living in CA and we have KFC, Church's and Popeyes and once Popeyes came to town there have been several KFCs that have closed. Love the videos, reminds me of home. Keep it up!

We are sadly lacking a Bojangles nearby here on the Gulf Coast, but hopefully that'll be rectified soon. I've had breakfast there elsewhere and WOW! I can only imagine how good their chicken is. As for the other three, I 100% agree with you. Weird how low KFC is now, too. In my early years I thought it much better but now it's only good for .. um .. making me have to stay home a day or two. Ugh. WAY back in the 70s when I lived in Hueytown, AL, my parents operated a restaurant and we got our batter from KFC's supplier. Only we cooked our chicken in a pressure fryer whereas at the time, I believe the Colonel used an open vat. Folks RAVED about how good our chicken was. We also had "Jo-Jo" potoatos (what folks now call potato logs) that were all the rage. Hmm ... maybe ... maybe rate potato logs next? Or, you mentioned gas station chicken. Dodge's has pretty good fare. Maybe compare it to grocery store deli chicken? Winn-Dixie is pretty good as is Publix (I hear Publix will even arrange financing, LOL). But Walmart? Like KFC, only good if I don't have anywhere to go for the next 12 to 24 hours.

The Hardees close to me still has good chicken.

There are some gas stations that fry up chicken that destroys drive thru biggens. Grew up in KCMO and we had a Church’s on the corner, loved their food, especially the corn and jalapeños. Haven’t had since the 80’s because they weren’t anywhere I lived after KC. Just moved to MS and they have it so can’t wait to get some.

I've never had Bojangles chicken. I live in California. We have the other 3. So I would rank Popeye as number 1.

Its not the original. The original went away decades ago and the crap today is no where near as good as the true original

The funny thing is some of the best chicken I have ever gotten has been at gas stations, those independents that have a little kitchen shoved into a corner and do chicken and breakfast biscuits.

I had some fried chicken at a gas station in Mississippi one night that blew my hair back.

when i was a kid, before an Auburn game, we would go through the Hardee's Drive-Thru and get a basket of their fried chicken and take it to tailgate. that was good stuff.

Now I want to see the bone-out tenders ranking! Dying to know where Raising Cane’s fits in.

I finally got to try Bojangles last year and it reminded me of Church's-- EXACTLY like Church's. There's a local place that tastes like them too which makes me wonder if there's some recipe sold to corporations

I took a vacation to South Carolina last summer and it was vital I had to try Bojangles. I was very delighted and I'm sad we don't get them in Indiana so I'm planning on moving south.

My wife is Kenyan so we're here a lot for months at a time. There's a KFC here but it misses the mark just a bit (too salty). I'm always ready for a round of my favorite dishes each time I get back. Nearly all chicken here is free range...but a bit tougher and generally tastier than the factory farm chicken there.

you were 100% spot on... on the rankings !!!! i made the mistake of getting KFC last week for the family I asked for extra crispy because thats what the kids wanted and received original I got 3 biscuits instead of the 4 youre supposed to get The drive thru girl was on meth or something She was flailing her arms around and i could not understand a thing she was saying I called them when i got home and discovered my order was wrong No return call I called KFC customer service She listened to me but never heard anything back No more KFC ever They used to be one of my favorites Bojangles and Popeyes from now on !!!!!!!!

I actually really like KFC, they were my friends when my bojangles temporarily closed and was getting remodeled. Popeyes unfortunately isn’t close to my area and the gas station that is I never seem to get spicy no matter how many times I tell them spicy.

Another local for Dallas/ Ft. Worth is Chicken Express. Great chicken, but their sweet tea is legendary.

After finally having Bojangles for the first time I agree, especially after getting under seasoned Popeyes eight before, luckily I'm finally getting one in my hometown

We don't have Church's here in Tally, but they have it up the road in T'ville GA . Bill Bojangles Robinson was raised in Richmond VA. There is a statue of him there. I lived near there in Grad School.

Everything this man says is pure gold!

I've found with church's it depends on management, there are certain church's we refuse to go to because it sucks so bad.

Church’s is the best. Their breading is great and seasoned just right. The local Church’s closed down almost a year ago and I’m still upset. Best locally now is Popeyes

It didnt meet the drive thru criteria, but I have discovered that in the south(as well as the world at large), major grocery store fried chicken is usually the best you can get in town.

Man, I miss Bojangles. Moving up north was okay, but that is one of the restaurants I miss most.

I know I am SUPER late to this video but I totally agree with this ranking even 4 years later. :)
