Ranking Ice Cream Brands | Bless Your Rank

Комедия

I scream! You scream! We all scream for a comprehensive ranking of ice cream brands! Matt is tasting and ranking chocolate ice cream from Blue Bell, Mayfield, Breyer’s, Blue Bunny, Ben & Jerry’s, Haagan-Dazs, Edy’s, and of course the generic giant clear tub of ice cream. Which brand will finish this episode of Bless Your Rank on top?

Fun Fact Time: Häagen-Dazs ice cream was first made in Bronx New York in 1960 by Ruben and Rose Mattus. The name Häagen-Dazs means nothing they just put a lot of letters together until it sounded Swedish. Häagen-Dazs the first boojie ice cream.

IIRC (I'm not sure if it's this one or some different, but I know it was about ice cream brand), I heard a story by (I think) the daughter of the founder, that the founder was doing something in the kitchen and was constantly speaking out loud words as potential names for the brand until he stumbled upon something that sounded "foreign" enough. I'm not sure which story is true, yours, my or some different but yeah, the name was completely made up to sound bougie.

I wonder if it depends on where it's shipped from. For example, here in Oregon, Tillamook brand is local and their ice cream is SO GOOD. It tastes really fresh and it's super creamy. But people elsewhere say it's bad ice cream. Maybe the trick is to get ice cream from the brand that has a manufacturing facility nearest to you (not where they're headquartered, but if they have a factory nearby)

There was nothing better than going to see him at work and going into the ice cream freezer (a GIANT freezer filled with ice cream) and being allowed to get a treat from the "broken package" cart.

I agree with your assessment of Breyers ice cream. It has become one of the worst name-brand ice creams out there. That being said, I remember Breyers back in the late 70s and early 80s. THAT was some reeaallyy good ice cream! However, the stock-holders wanted more profit, so the product went down the tubes.

Fun fact, despite its name, Häagen-Dazs is an American brand. And it's something the owners just came up with because they thought it sounded Danish (the Jewish owners wanted a Danish-sounding name as tribute to Denmark's treatment of Jews during WWII). But ä and zs do not exist in Danish. However similar words in Danish, hagen and das means chin and outhouse respectively.

I will always have fond feelings for the Tub o’ Ice Cream! When we had to go back and forth to Canada with our small kids, we always took an empty bucket with a lid. It wasn’t unusual to be stuck on the Ambassador Bridge (or somewhere in Customs) for upwards of an hour, and that bucket saved the day on more than one occasion!

The thing about Tub o' Ice cream is that the white vanilla is about the same as the stuff in ice cream sandwiches and other ice cream truck treats. I like it in a Nutty Buddy. We grew up on Bryers and Sealtest whenever there was a family birthday.

My favorite is Friendly's, a brand that's surprisingly still around. But they're hardly in the South, they're all up here in the Northeast. If you go to a Friendly's restaurant, you gotta have dessert. Even if you don't have room or it's too early for dessert. I love their French vanilla and mint chocolate chip sold in markets.
