Some people, including Michael Bay himself, didn't think Peter Cullen reprising his role as Optimus Prime would work, and they were all wrong. Bringing back Garry Chalk would have been no different.

As I thought about it, Gary's Primal does sound younger than Cullen's Prime. Idk if that dynamic may be why they didnt bring him back and instead went for someone who sounds more mature and older.

6:28 My impression from Optimal Optimus’s creation was he got converted into a full on autobot sized transformer by Optimus Prime’s spark. That’s why he was so relatively humongous.

Hm, he's definitely big, but I don't think he's quite that big. He still looks less than half the height of Optimus Prime from the shots we see them in. I could be wrong, though.

@@wd3185 I wouldn’t say he got as big as Optimus Prime. Maybe he was at a deluxe size point? Legends and core class being the approximate scaling of the Maximals and Predicons.

Optimus Primal is the goat, loved how Gary Chalk voiced him. Also his portrayal of Armada Optimus was really iconic too, but it was the best of both worlds!

The fact you got Garry Chalk to be in this video is amazing.

Garry Chalk was the first Optimus I was introduced to thanks to Cybertron, so I hold both him and David Kaye in high regard because of that. With that said, as sad as it is for him not to voice Primal in ROTB, I think that Primal's maximal design is lowkey a brilliant reimagining of the character and the robot form isn't to bad either.

Imo i think yhe lack of color was necessary to make the robot and animal modes look right. The live action movies have to make the transformations feek a bit more believable

@@iharpo9292 I don't it will be an issue with Cheetor and Rhinox since their original Beast Wars' designs aren't are colorful as Primal's was. Not sure on Airazor since we haven't seen her robot mode yet outside of the figures.

Bruh, they should've gotten Garry for Primal at least. Peter and Garry together, both Optimus on screen would've been awesome.

I think Primal's robot mode in ROTB is S-Tier. Not only is the design overall absolutely badass, but it makes sense why the coloration is so dull. From what I know, in this movie, the maximal came from the future and have been stranded on Earth for many long years, so it makes sense their coloration would become duller over time. Besides, looking at the design, it would just be really jarring if they gave him reds and blues.

True but from a design point of view big Gray characters aren't very interesting. Even Scourge, who is a Big Gray Villain, has personality in his design by the inner fire and the lanky elements.

Dull coloration makes the characters less interesting. Sideswipe and Jazz would've been better with a bright colorscheme like their G1 counterparts

The fact Comodian got Garry chalk to come on down to have little chat really speaks volumes, Hasbro really fumbled on one of the biggest crossovers we could've had.

I like Gary’s take of a prime like he can have a laugh and still be leader and bit of a father figure his voice is as memorable as Peter Cullens

It's kind of weird that I grew up with G1, but it was Beast wars where I found "My" Optimus. I just dig the character, and Garry's voice fits him so well.

My only issues with ROTB is the lack of color and the lack of his iconic face. He gets the full mask, which washes him out next to Prime. When the control art came out, I will say it made him look so much better with the black contrasted with the gold/bronze instead of the brown in the trailer

Don’t judge me! Haha Him and Rattrap are my favorite characters from BW. Have you seen our Primal Parodies videos we make? I’ve been trying to get them more noticed, but it’s been slow-going. That third party Optimus primal to me looks like if primal was an Autobot instead of a maximal. Like he’s got the boxy shape of the Autobots and Decepticons who had beast modes.

Finally someone who likes Beast Machines design! I wish it had "Ears" and his faceplate but always open. I also hope that this and other BM designs will get some Legacy stuff in future. I also wonder what Garry think about this design🤔

3:06 My personal favorite Primal design. It's simply perfect; heroic, but the black gives just the right degree of edge to let you know this isn't someone you want to mess with. 5:35 I really like the transmetals. The mechanized beast modes with robot modes that look partly organic really sells that the transmetal isn't just a simple upgrade, but a mutation and the vehicle modes have the kind of cheesiness that could only have worked in the 90s. My only major complaint is that Optimus in any incarnation without the face guard just doesn't look right. It's like Batman without the ears. Transmetal Primal would be my favorite if he had the face guard and had a paintjob more like his first form. 6:22 I really don't like the paintjob, it looks very preschool. Primal Prime and Throne of the Primes are definite improvements there, but the bulkiness of that form makes him look more like an enforcer or brute than a commander. 8:53 I may be in the minority, but I actually like how alien and comic book-like this form looks. I'd like it a lot more if it had a more Optimus-like head and face. 19:44 It's basically Season One Primal, but all-Cybertronian. It would tie with "Season One" as my favorite if the gorilla head had a slightly more natural shape.

In the case of Rise of the Beasts Optimus Primal, I can kinda get behind the lack of color. It gives him a more grizzled, old look, which is fitting considering as far as I know, the Maximals have been on planet earth for millions of years, living in secret. His chest plate in robot mode is all rusted and jagged from centuries of weathering, so in this case, it kind of fits.

There are some very specific things that makes ROTB Primal a mediocre design. Firstly, Like you said, he has no color. And the use of color in the original design was VERY intentional cuz here's the thing, the robot and beast modes are functionally very similar. They are both humanoid bipeds, mainly differing in their general proportions. And that makes it harder to differentiate the beast mode from the robot mode than it would be for a vehicle mode. The way the OG design approached this challenge was color. When any of the characters transform, they open up, their organic bits split apart revealing robotic detail underneath, which is usually a color that contrasts with their beast hide. So when primal transforms, lots of Blues, reds and whites are revealed. This makes it truly feel as if he did not just change shape, he became something different. So ROTB fails in this by not creating any sort of disconnect between modes. No new colors are revealed, and the gorilla is already mechanical so no new mechanics are revealed. it's just a different shape. Second, he simply does not stand out., All the maximals except maybe airrazor have pretty much the same silhouette and morphology, with their only difference being their build. This could easily have been mitigated by giving him his classic raised shoulderpads, denoting his authority as well as making him stand out more. this, combined with how all the maximals in this movie purely consist of greys and browns, makes them feel completely uniform and homogenous. And Making his head finds almost unnoticable also makes him stand out less as rhinox and cheetor also have pretty smooth round featureless heads.

I like to imagine a modern enemy hero relationship of Optimus primal and Megatron rex as like animated prime and megatron

It rather bothers me that they didn't get Gary Chalk to be Primal in the new film. I don't even hear Ron Pearlman in the new film. He just sounds like random pitch shifted male. Gary has such a specific sound that is for me, irreplaceable, much like Peter Cullen or Frank Welker. Remember when they replaced Frank Welker with Hugo Weaving and then pitched his voice down so much that it didn't even sound like Hugo Weaving anymore? Then they got Frank Welker back to do Galvatron and everyone was like "Oh! I guess Frank Welker DOES sound great in a live action Transformers film" so they brought him back to be Megatron in the next film...I get the idea that the casting department at Paramount are kinda dumb.
