Rangitata River to Lake Ohau - Te Araroa (Part 18)

My 3000km walk along the length of New Zealand continues. This five day section of the trail takes me from the huge, braided Rangitata River to Lake Ohau in the Mackenzie Basin. From the Bush Stream Carpark at the Rangitata River, I follow Bush Stream up the valley, with multiple waist deep river crossings, into Te Kahui Kaupeka Conservation Park. After a very steep 500m climb from the stream up to Crooked Spur Hut, I climb up an unnamed saddle, before descending back to Bush Stream and Stone Hut. I spend the night at Stone Hut, before continuing up the valley to Royal Hut (the halfway point of the South Island section of the trail). Here, the climb to Stag Saddle begins. This is the highest point on the Te Araroa Trail at 1925m above sea level. There are amazing views over Lake Tekapo and Mt Cook National Park walking down the ridge to Camp Stream Hut and then on to Lilybank Road near Lake Tekapo. The next day, I road walk into Tekapo Village, where I have a rest day before following part of the Alps to Ocean Cycle Trail for 85km for the next two days, all the way across the Mackenzie Basin to Lake Ohau, via Lake Pukaki and Twizel.
This channel is dedicated to my walk on the 3000km Te Araroa Trail, sharing my experiences and trying to raise the funds I will need to achieve this. Any financial help through Buy me a Coffee (www.buymeacoffee.com/onthetra...) would be greatly appreciated, but even a simple video like or channel subscribe will help. Thank you and enjoy!

Yeah that was definitely an interesting few crossings! We only had one person swept away, but managed to get them out okay!

Awesome series of videos from your TA! Planning to hike the south island as well next year! Would you recommend bringing a drone on the TA or is it not worth carying the weight? I have a DJI mini 3 so it’s not that heavy, but it’s quite bulky in its bag

Thanks!! Personally, I would probably not recommend carrying it. I took mine (at that time DJI Mini 2 - now I have the Mini 3 Pro) for a few of the shorter sections where my parents were able to drop if off to me at the start of the section and pick it up at the end. But it would be very annoying to have to carry through the longer sections where you need to have more food like the Richmond’s or the Waiau Pass

Loving the scenery you are showing us. Thank you. Can I ask - With your long distance you don't seem to have any problems with your feet. Do you do anything in particular to help with that?

Glad you enjoyed it! At the very beginning of the trail, I definitely had a few blisters, but by the end of the Auckland region they stopped being an issue. At the beginning, I used Hiker's Wool in my socks, which seemed to stop the rubbing.

What time of year did you do the SI? Also, what are you using to track mileage and elevation gains? Great posts btw

Thanks for watching! I started the South Island mid-February and finished mid-April. I used an Apple Watch SE to track everything, which worked well. It did need charging quite a lot though.
