life on the limit - a visual diary on New Zealand's long distance walk
Фильм және анимация
I am very excited to share with you a project that I have been working on in the past months.
Last summer I went out on a big adventure on New Zealands longest hiking trail named "Te Araroa".
The documentary "life on the limit" shares my personal experience of walking long distances for several weeks alone as a women, challenges I faced and how I tested my personal limits.
My intention is to share my true feelings I felt along the way and to give you an insight into the raw reality of thru hiking.
I hope to inspire others to explore themselves by hiking in nature day after day.

This was one of the best documentaries I've ever watched
You are awesome. This isn't a walk for the inexperienced, unfit or weak of character. It's a relationship between you and your conversations with the land. You'll have obstacles and challenges consistently. Strong yet gentle. Resilient yet flexible. Motivated and weary. Comfortable in discomfort. Surviving a busy mind is a gift. You did great. Mauri Ora! Arohanui from Aotearoa.

Tautoko to korero, I love your beautiful words, and they resonate deeply with this Kiwi Nana/Tramper. ❤ I love this video. 😍🌿🙆🏻♀️
Wow Sarah, honestly, I love this so much. It's a masterpiece, so beautifully made and it fills me up with so much joy and sadness at the same time. It makes me feel a lot, it reminds me of the life I actually want to live and it makes me so grateful for all the experiences I have made so far. Thank your for sharing this and inspiring, thank you for being so brave. I love you, I miss you. I feel honoured to be able to watch this intimate journey of yours. Thank you, so so much 🙏🏻✨

ohh what a sweet comment, thank you so much steff. I appreciate your ability to see the love i put into this piece. Hope you're still being as creative as i met you. I miss you too.🌻❤️
My son sent me your inspiring vlog and I loved every moment! I lived in NZ (from Australia) for almost 5 years at your age, so beautiful and a walkers' paradise! Thankyou for yr honesty and personal insights and the wildflowers are glorious!
You have made a very beautiful video that represents the full experience of tramping TA with all its ups and downs. I really appreciated the effort you put into filming and editing your experiences. It's clear that you appreciated what you were doing at the time and soaked up what you were seeing. I like the personal insights you have made, in particular about the joys of lacking technology and getting away from screens.
Very beautifully filmed & crafted piece of art! Should have more views! 💚
That was excellent - I really enjoyed it! The footage was amazing and the story telling was brilliant, loved the honesty! Thanks very much for sharing.
An amazing journey for anyone - never mind a girl from half a world away from NZ! I intended to watch five minutes of your vlog and then go elsewhere in KZread, but ended up watching all of it. You are an amazing person, and I hope you keep having a fantastic life!
You have the right to be very proud of what you achieved and of your film, I found it very moving. Your film brought back great memories for me of hiking in New Zealand ( before the time of phones 😂)Be as brave with the rest of your life as you have been on this walk and you won’t go far wrong. Good wishes for the futures

Go there! Its absolute great and absolutely stunning! Everything, everywhere, everone! And the TA is a great way to feel that. Unfortenately I can't do the TA, but I'm dreaming of the Milford-Track one day........ If I can go back there
Thank you for sharing this with us
Well done on your beautiful film Sarah and for stepping outside your comfort zone. I’m sure you’ll have grown and learnt so much from the experience 💚. Thanks for sharing your trip ❤
Thank you so much for this beautiful, moving and honest video about your TA hike. I really loved it! In the near future i'm doing this trail myself and your insights gives me even more spirit starting the trail and enjoying it like you did!
Thanks for the great video Sarah. Life is an adventure. Enjoy it :)
This was so beautiful! 🤍
Congratulations for completing such a huge adventure and documenting it so beautifully in your film.
Inspiring! Many thanks for this.
Beautifully produced, and really like your honest reactions to the hike. Cheers Chris..
This made my day. Thanks for sharing. Love the music.
What a beautiful video, was amazing to watch! I’m about to embark on the TA in 3 weeks & am so happy I came across your account of this amazing adventure! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for sharing Sarah. This is very well made. The videography, the sound the narration. All well crafted. You captured that loneliness everyone goes thru when hiking alone for days and days and no one to talk to and share the experience with. Have been there and I'm not sure I'd ever want to go thru that again Likewise, what you said about challenges and being adaptable and how they improve our confidence. Just pure gold.
You did great job Sarah,I hope I can start the trail as well but at this moment I haven't yet.You video is ispired me a lot and I got some common feeling with you like when you hiking want to using device to record the majestic views to remember or sharing to more people, the intention obviously is good but aslo it's very hard to take out the device to setting position and recording it and put it back .I did some hiking and I am really like it ,but probably comparing with your experience mine one just it's not much to be particular about .But I will keeping going ,I am purely agree with you ,life is so short .Do anything that come you mind but positve one .If can inspiring someone that's another beautifuel things on the world .Thanks for sharing your video,I hoping I can sharing something to the world soon .All best for you next adventure. Thank you so much! Yes it it definitely a lot of work filming yourself on an adventure like this one, but as long as you do it with passion it's fun. You can do it too🏔😉
Thank you for an outstanding video of the TA. Congratulations possibly the best representation yet of this long trail and what it means to undertake a journey on your own. Trail name "Big T"
Awesome well done, a story very well presented
Very Inspirational film, am also thinking of doing this hike as a solo female next year. Beautiful footage, thank you for sharing and creating:)
A deeply fulfilling journey topped off with a well crafted film memoir. Well done you! Thanks for sharing. 🙂
Wow!! Great video of mu home country xx Makes me home sick living in England, Lake District. You should come and do the Coast to Coast walk in England.
I'm only 9 minutes in and already I love and am engaged with your frank and personal experience of this part of your life journey. I will be sharing this with my young niece who is also looking to steer her own course through life and all that that involves. Right! Off to watch more our your vlog! Thank you for sharing! Hope your life continues to challenge and excite and thrill you :)
Thank you, Sarah, for sharing your experiences from the long TA hike with this splendid, so beautifully filmed and very interesting video. Tough hikes make you sweat and cause pains, but they will give you confidence to survive also in the future tough situations. Wishing you all the best, and sending you warm greetings from the snowy Finland 😊💕❄
This video is sooo good and heart-warming. Such a good register of your experience. I hope to do some similar when I do the TA one day.
Sarah, it is nearly 11pm, and I have been riveted by your story and most of all your videography. Very moving and it tugged at my memories of a time gone by when I worked in many of those places from Nelson to Southland (Fiordland NP). But, never have done it in one continuous tramp. I am an Artist/Photographer but have never done any blogs, etc in recent times. Your standalone effort is quite remarkable, particularly doing a lot on your own. Yes, what challenges you gave yourself. Beautiful Just. I hope you blog some more.......Robin.......Aargh Phones..........!..
Great video! Thank you, it was quite inspirational!
i love your video, really great job!!!! 😍
Awesome video Sarah. Thanks so much for sharing. Greetings from Europe.
Very cool - you are awesome! Looking forward to seeing the 2nd half??
Well done. I have trekked some of those trails ... not so easy. Very beautiful though. Being alone is a learning.
Great job! I loved the flow and pacing. Also, I bought a camera from you in Motueka while I was filming my TA video in 2021! Small world 😀

Wonderful journal! I'm planning a NOBO attempt of the South Island in 2 years and this helps so much. I'm curious what months you did your trip?
Hi Sarah What an amazing film, really enjoy your Style of film making. Can I ask have you been to film school or are you self Taught? Long distance walking is like a re set for the brain, and a beautiful way to spend moments of your life. Once again thank you for making such a wonderful film. Jon

Thanks so much for the tip! Looks like a great choice. I was planning on doing a film of the South Island in February, and that looks like a good choice. The 4k 60fps is perfect. I’ve done this hike before in summer 5 years ago as well and couldn’t imagine doing it in spring when the weather is so much colder and wetter. You’re tough!
Wow! Incredible video, incredible experience, I plan to do Te Arearoa in January next year, but one question I ask myself is how much money did you spend on your trip? Thank you so much!!!
Very nice vid. And very nice dehy food too:) Did you only do veges?

Yes good food is very important when hiking. I am on a plantbased diet, so mostly vegetables, beans, rice, quinoa, barley, buckwheat precooked and dehydrated.
wonderful video! 🧡 makes me want to get going myself... you were crossing alot of rivers - did you wear any waterproof covering for your shoes or did you just go on with soaking wet socks and footwear? i want to do the pathway soon as well and this is one of my concerns :)
@craftysquirrell

Heiii, its pretty hard to keep youre feed dry on such an adventure. I basically had a dry pair of socks for the night in the hut and in the mornings I would put on my wet socks, sometimes half frozen as I knew they would get wet again anyway. Don't think waterproof covers for the shoes help much as the rivers were sometimes up to my hip deep🙈😅

@@craftysquirrell thanks ✌️... i may have to think about some light hiking sandals to change into for the river crossings. Cant wait!!!
Was it hard to eat vegan on trail, were there vegan options in town? Did you see any TVP/ textured vegetable protein? We're doing the hike next month and would love to ask you some questions 🙏
@craftysquirrell

Heii, all the best for your TA journey. I personally didn't find it hard to eat vegan on trail. Dehydrated all my meals for the trail beforehand, to make sure I eat healthy while doing such a phisical intense project. Ate lots of beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, dried fruit, quinoa, barley, buckwheat, wholemeal products and of course peanut butter😋🌱 some small towns don't provide a big variety of food options but i was still fine for me.
Did tou only stay in huts? Hiw much are they per night?
How much hiking had you done before your te araroa thru hike?
@craftysquirrell

good question. I grew up in the mountains so always enjoyed hiking. Never did more than a three day hike before starting the TA though.🌞
Looking at your pack size it was too heavy.
