Lake Ohau to Wanaka - Te Araroa (Part 19)

My 3000km walk along the length of New Zealand continues. This five day section of the trail takes me from Lake Ohau in the Mackenzie Basin to Wanaka - a popular tourist town. From Lake Ohau, I follow the East Ahuriri Track up Freehold Creek, crossing an unnamed saddle before descending into the Ahuriri Valley. The Ahuriri River is the largest unbridged river crossing on Te Araroa and when I walked through, the river looked high, so I had to take the detour to the road bridge (adding another 6km). Once across the river, I follow the Avon Burn Easement Track through private land and then into Hawea Conservation Park, over Mt Martha Saddle and down to Top Timaru Hut in the Timaru Valley. After spending the night here, I follow the track in and out of the Timaru River heading down the valley, before leaving the valley and climbing 500m up to Stodys Hut. My original plan was to stay here, but I decided to continue over Breast Hill and down to Pakituhi Hut, making it a huge day with over 1,700m altitude gain! The decent from Pakituhi Hut to Lake Hāwea is amazing, with constant views over the lake. From the lake, I follow the shared use Gladstone Track and then Hawea River Track to Albert Town. Here, I take a rest day and have a look around Wanaka, before walking into Wanaka the next day.
This channel is dedicated to my walk on the 3000km Te Araroa Trail, sharing my experiences and trying to raise the funds I will need to achieve this. Any financial help through Buy me a Coffee (www.buymeacoffee.com/onthetra...) would be greatly appreciated, but even a simple video like or channel subscribe will help. Thank you and enjoy!

Awesome photography Jared. It just keeps getting better. Some of the trail looked more suited to goats though! 👍👏😊

The amazing scenery just keeps on going! The trail definitely was dodgy - especially going down the hill into Hawea!

Probably not even up to goat track standard! Definitely a beautiful part of the country.

Thanks for following! I carried the MSR Hubba Hubba (2 Person), which was about 1.7kg - quite a large tent in comparison to some of the others, but definitely worth the extra weight for some more space. I wore the Salomon XA Pro 3D V8 shoes, which I would definitely recommend. I only went through two pairs - one for each island, which is pretty good compared to what other people had.

Looks like it's starting to get cold at nite. What type of watch did you have on trail. Looks like it had all the stats

Yeah definitely started to get a bit colder! I used an Apple Watch SE (1st generation) - pretty good for the stats but does require charging at least once a day.

Walking along the schist looks hard to see where the trail is 🤫

Yeah it's not too bad, but you definitely have to watch where you're putting your feet!
