Wanaka to Queenstown - Te Araroa (Part 20)

My 3000km walk along the length of New Zealand continues. This four day section of the trail takes me from Wanaka to Queenstown. From Wanaka, I follow the lakefront shared use pathway around the lake for just under 20km to Glendhu Bay. From here, I follow Motatapu Road to the start of the Motatapu Alpine Track. This is a three day track from Glendhu Bay to Arrowtown over privately owned land. I make it all the way to Highland Creek Hut (from Wanaka) the first day, which was a long day! The second day was a short day from Highland Creek Hut to Roses Hut, which was only about 11km but included over 1100m of climbing! After a night at Roses Hut, I follow the track over Roses Saddle and then drop down into the Arrow River Valley, where I choose the high route above the river. This track takes me to Macetown, a historic abandoned mining settlement, where there is a campsite. From here, I follow the track out to Arrowtown, via Big Hill Saddle (another 500m climb!). The final day on this section takes me from Arrowtown to Queenstown - a section of about 30km mainly consisting of easy shared use walk/bike paths, passing through Lake Hayes, Lower Shotover and Frankton before reaching Queenstown.
This channel is dedicated to my walk on the 3000km Te Araroa Trail, sharing my experiences and trying to raise the funds I will need to achieve this. Any financial help through Buy me a Coffee (www.buymeacoffee.com/onthetra...) would be greatly appreciated, but even a simple video like or channel subscribe will help. Thank you and enjoy!

@@onthetrailnz Hi Jared, was there an old gold stamping mill in Macetown, I was there in the early 1970's & there was one that had a roof over it to help preserve it?

Hi, there were signs saying there were a few stamping batteries further up the valley a bit. I think the closest one was about 20 minutes each way from where I was in Macetown, so I decided just to continue!

What beautiful country Jared (until you get to the weird alleyway entry into Q'town)! I have never tramped in that sort of country, but it reminded me of nassella tussock grubbing days in North Canterbury when I was at school - especially the caress of matagouri on bare legs! Lovely long views, sunny days, and excellent huts. We have often stayed at Glendhu Bay campground, but I had no idea the Motatapu Track started just around the corner.

Yes, it was definitely a beautiful part of the country! The Glendhu Bay campground looked nice - I met a few people on the Motatapu that had stayed there the night before.
