NZ Must Do - Hooker Valley Track, Mt Cook (Aoraki) National Park

The Hooker Valley Track is the most popular short hike in Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park. It's an absolute must do when visiting the beautiful Mackenzie Region in the South Island of New Zealand.
Our accommodation was in Twizel, so before we set out for the day, we had breakfast nearby at the Musterers Hutt. Friendly staff, great food and they even have an 18 hole mini golf course out front.
Musterers Hutt
Address: 20 Ruataniwha Road, Twizel 7901
www.musterershut.co.nz/
After breakfast we headed over to the Mount Cook National Park Visitor Centre to have a look around and get recommendations on what other short track we could fit into our day trip. Straight after that, we drove over to park at White Horse Hill Campsite which is the start of the Hooker Valley Track.
While Aoraki Mount Cook is NZ's tallest mountain, the Tasman Glacier is New Zealand's longest and largest glacier. The short but steep walk to the Tasman Glacier lookout viewpoint is definitely worth doing for more spectacular views. Just be prepared for a lot of stairs!

Guys thanks for such informative videos u always produce! Personally, those facts are exactly why I value your videos: u provide Altitud, Distances, how long it took u to get to certain point, temperature, toilets location, etc. All that combined with your genuine style make the videos so enjoyable and helpful! Thankssss!

I think if you're heading into McKenzie region you should allow at least 3 nights so that you can spend time at the lakes and Mt Cook. Weather can be pretty temperamental too so adding an extra day or two for that can be good too. If you enjoy hiking a lot you might even want to stay at Mt Cook they offer nice accommodation just a lil on the pricey side.

In the year 2000, when a friend and I did the Ball Pass crossing with the late mountain guide Erica Beuzenberg, she referred to those spiky plants as the "Horrid Spaniard". Erica tragically died, along with 2 clients, when one of the clients slipped while descending from Ball Pass, and all 3 that were roped together slid to their deaths.

Great video! Kiwi (Wellingtonian) living in London, here 🙂 I did the Hooker Valley a couple of times, both times were AMAZING!! I think the second time I did it I had a back injury (woke up the morning of my flight from London to NZ with my back in agony, but I had to catch the flight...) You could the scenery so well, it's truly a magical experience! I was thinking while watching this "oh no, don't remember any toilets, be worried about now doing the walk...then you showed them...fantastic! LOL... Stayed in Twizel a few times and even visited the salmon farm up the road. Was super surprised at the cost of your brekkie though, that is expensive!!
