Randy Travis sings again, courtesy of AI

In 2013 country singer Randy Travis suffered a massive stroke, which paralyzed his right side and damaged an area of his brain that controls speech and language. He has not quite recovered the ability to sing, but working with singer James DuPre and a computer program that creates an AI-generated version of his voice, Travis and his longtime producer Kyle Lehning have created a new song, "Where That Came From," that captures Randy's country heart. Lee Cowan reports.

This video is hella creepy. It is a public service announcement to everyone who recognizes Randy's hand gesture at the end there. He is a shell of the man he once was. That man was dead. Why would he need someone to sing his songs and match them with A.I. technology. AI could have used 30 seconds of any of his old songs and created a Randy Travis song. I think its punishment. My old mentor Darrell Phillips worked with every artist in the music industry in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. He was in charge of all the concerts that took place at the River Center and Super Dome. He told me when I was 19 that Randy Travis was the worst of all the bands, the rappers, pop stars... I asked him who was the best person(their character) and who was the worst. He said Randy Travis was abusive to people under him and was always trying not to pay. I am not judging. I am just trying to figure out why this blatant abuse of an old man and his life's work is being celebrated and used to control other artists.

@@morbidmanmusic That AI needed HIS VOICE in order to complete the project. It had EVERYTHING to do with his voice ... It gives Randy a piece of his life back that he lost many years ago. The happiness that he exudes is worth it all!! Some singers don't even have any of the instruments to make a song... It's all computerized, and nobody says anything about them. And in some cases, there is a mic that will make you sound AMAZING... Many use them. So, whatever it takes, to make it work... Awesome. But when Randy first started singing, he had it all. And it was his voice that set him apart from everyone.

Randy Travis...I love you dearly! My late husband and I had and enjoyed all your music from the very beginning. I am so glad the Lord has blessed us all, by still having you here on this earth. My husband passed in 2005 and I still miss him dearly. He would be crying with me now, just by hearing your beautiful songs. You are an amazing child of God. Mary, thank you for taking such wonderful care of him.

I remember when Forever and Ever, Amen was in heavy rotation on country music radio stations in the late 1980s. My dad was an aspiring country music singer. Radny Travis was one of his favorite artists. He would sit and listen to Forever and Ever, Amen multiple times then he would get his guitar and play the song while singing the lyrics. When Randy lost his ability to sing years later, it was beyond tragic. He was robbed of the latter half of his career. He had so much music left to perform. It warms my heart to see AI being used for something good. We hear so many negative things about the technology. It can be a useful tool to help people like Randy get their voice back after losing it to health problems.

Normally I like the goofy things people can use AI for (like making Elvis song Baby got Back). Then I lament that some of them are so good, it’s a bit frightening. However, given that Randy worked on this with his team because he lost something he is passionate about…well, that’s pretty awesome. And this is the difference between all those goofy little generators and generations you find scoured online: this is the man himself, working with his team, painstakingly trying to craft new music with Randy’s pipes-and you see a lot of REAL goes into that.

For all you going negative on Randy's song and AI. I'm guessing you have never had a family member suffer a stroke and in an instant take away everything in life that meant so much to them. For Randy, his family and fans this at least allows them the opportunity to hear what he might sound like had he not had a stroke. I get he wouldn't sound the same today, but it sure is cool to hear that one of a kind voice again. AI doesn't take away from his lyrics or his passion for music. Seeing the smile on his face says it all! You are missing the point, it's deeper than AI!

@@vidmon Hiya Vidmon- There's nothing inherently wrong with the IDEA of A.I. .... But it's what The Powers That Be have in store for us and the way THEY are going to use it that's disturbing. Right now, it's all fun 'n games. It seems innocuous and the "feel good" aspect is being sold to the population. But mark my words... The Club has bigger plans for the medium.

That's not really what he would sound like tho that's what he did sound like... AI can only replicate what it has heard.... its like making a new elvis song noone knows what a 89 year old elvis singing voice would sound like

@@db11750 - True, but it's essentially the same thing, at least in part, that the Beatles have done a couple of times already. Blending old vocals from members no longer alive with those of the surviving members. Those songs don't represent what all four of them would actually sound like on a completely new recording either, since that's no longer possible. One way to look at tech like this is that any "new" creations could be considered like past songs from the vault that were "lost" and rediscovered.
